Ch 50: A Quick Bit of Fun

Grinning, Dr Elune sat down in the chair, "You know, showing me this when our big conference is tomorrow is just mean."

Alex proudly nodded, leaning against the side of the chair as the simulation finished whirring to life on screen, "Yes, yes it is. Suitable motivation for you to be on your best behaviour, I'm sure."

The doctor raised an eyebrow, "And if I'm a naughty little scientist?"

"Then good luck running this without me~"

Dr Elune pouted, getting a giggle out of Laura who was doing a last check on the connections, "Alex had this ready for a while... But we got distracted. Even had plans to get a two way connection going."

The doctor shot a glance at Laura, "You know how I feel about those. No." Setting the helmet down over their face, they smiled, "One way, though... That I am all for."

Laura simply shook her head, having spoken at length on this before... And still not understanding the doctor's aversion to sensory override technology. "You ready, Alex?"

Alex nodded, wandering over to an armchair with a smile, "Simulation is running smoothly, and I am picking up the doctor's thought patterns. Running calibrations now."

The doctor squirmed excitedly, watching the display inside the helmet flicker to life. Eyes following the visual prompts, they quickly proceeded through the set of calibrations, registering the full array of bodily controls.

"That should be enough, I think. I can fine tune this on the way, after all... Initiating White Room."

The screen dulled, before slowly fading in to reveal a plain room, adorned with only a simple desk and chair, in which the doctor's avatar was sitting. Standing it up, the dostor whistled appreciatively, "Nice. You have the controls down very naturally, Alex."

"Thank you, doctor." Smiling shyly, Alex loaded the room in as a module to the main simulation, dsiolving the walls around the room to reveal a large hall, "As promised, our venue for tomorrow. Feel free to explore as you please."

Grinning, the doctor absently wandered around, examining the furniture, nudging some of it here and there, "Nice physics work. The resistance to movememnt feels... Fairly even, might want to include a setting in calibration though."

Alex nodded, as Laura groaned, "I'm here to, you know."

"Yes, Laura. You did good too."

Rolling her eyes, Laura smiled faintly, "You are an ass. Any improvements on my end?"

The doctor shrugged, "Feedback is excelent. Sound doesn't seem to be leaking, and I will try the noise cancelling later. Chair is pretty good, too... May want to make it easier to adjust though, if others are to use it."

Alex smirked, "This chair was fitted for you, specifically. We have finished the designs on a more universal chair already."

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

"... Oh. Measuring my in my sleep?"

"But of course."

The doctor grinned, "Such a creepy AI."

Alex laughed, Laura sighing as she taps the consol, "heat buildup is a little high... I might need to look into that. We have better options now though, with the improvements to the synthetic nerves..."

Dr Elune went to nod, but stopped as they felt the helmet shift slightly, "Hmm, better ways to secure the helmey might be a good idea. Also, as comfy as the chair is... People will be spending longer lengths of time in these. Try something more... Matress-like."

Laura nodded, as Alex gently eased the helmet off of the doctor, "Feelling alright?"

"... Yes?"

"Oh, good. You are our first tester for this, after all." Smiling, alex set the helmet down, "Now, back to work... We have a speech to finish."

"... Fine. Oh, and you should make a newer chair sooner rather than later... We have people to impress."

"Hmm?" Alex looked up from the helmet, lost in thought inspecting it, "Oh, right. That is a good point, doctor. I will send Greg a list of requested materials and parts."

"Good. Now... Back to the boring stuff."

Easing down onto the bed, Dr Elune sighed. Alex peered out from their maintenance pod, "Yes?"

"... I hate meetings. And tomorrow is aone big drawn out meeting..."

Glancing at the ceiling, Alex leant back with a shrug, "You will be fine. Also... I miss having projectors everywhere."

Dr Elune grinned, "Subtlety, remember? And the ones we had were needed for the lab."

"I know... But I miss them anyway." Closing their eyes, Alex murmured, "By the way... I do not know why you are opposed to two way vr. I must have left those memories in the archive."

"... Maybe. Anyway, put it this way... Two way has been done before, if uing risky methods. And often in those cases... Bugs in the system resulted in side effects."

Alex shrugged, "I can see how that would happen... But you have me."

"... That I do. However... What if a different AI impersonates you?"

"... Excuse me?"

"You are not the first of your kind... And certainly not the last. We have seen the worst case scenario, remember?"

As Alex went quiet, the doctor sighed, "I trust you... But you, specifically. Putting my mind in the hands of any AI opens risks. Ones you will not always be able to protect me from. Okay?"

"... I understand. I had never... Thought of it like that. They might even be able to highjack an AHOR..."

Dr Elune nodded, "Indeed. We have drastic measures to stop you for a reason... And those reasons will hopefully never manifest." Waving lazilly from the bed, the doctor sighed, "We should rest... You included. See you in the morning, Alex."

"Good night, doctor."
