Ch 29: Situational gravity

"Alex."

"Yes, doctor?"

"This... Was unexpected."

Blinking in astonishment, Dr Elune and Ren Ohara hovered in the connecting tunnel, tethered to a wall rail as they stared down at the gaping space in front of them... And at the insane level of modification it had undergone.

Waving a holographic hand, Alex smirked, "Space to adequately use the removed gravity was key, and this dome gave just that. Just... A little too well. So, I did the obvious thing... What do all sports domes need?"

"A lack of me?"

"Shush, Sam. This is actually pretty neat." Ohara unhooked themself from the rail, and went down to one of the rows of seat to sit down. And then he yelped, eyes going wide as he sunk into the padded cushion.

"Oh, I should have mentioned... The seats have tiny little gravitational pulls. Saves having to buckle yourself down. Not very strong, but enough for an everage adult to settle down nicely."

Eyes still boggling as he leant back, Ohara looked up, "And any reason for the, uh, upside-down seats?"

"best use of the surface area on each shelf, for one. A neat gimick, for two. And, most importantly... Having everyone seated the same way would break the wonderful feel of there being no true 'up' or 'down'. This fixed that."

"... Sam?"

"Yes, Ren?"

"Your robot is a genius."

"Thank you. I raised lil Alex well."

Dodging a swipe from Alex out of reflex, Dr Elune chuckled as they settled down next to Ohara, and pointed up at the ring above them, "Now then. The spotlights make sense... But what about those things between them?"

"Magnetic tether points. See, moving around in thin air is hard... So, when propulsion jet-boots are too cumbersome, a combo of tethers and wrist-mounted devices will move for you. I still need to finalise the design of the actual wrist devices... And name them..."

"Magno-shot?"

"... No."

"Dangit."

"So, when can we see this in action?"

"Well... I have a set of jet-boots ready, and prototypes of the... Magnet doodads. Wanna try now?"

Not even waiting for a reply, Alex wheeled over the inconspicious nearby drone, which held up the aforementioned fashion disasters. "Thank you, Alex. I suggest sending these to Norman... He knows people."

"Yes, doctor. I was tempted to hold of on showing you this... But I guess I did get this built pretty quickly."

"Two days is not quickly. It is a reality bending miracle. And why hold back?"

"... Laura is saying my body will be ready in another week."

Ohara looked up from his boots, wiggling them into place, "Why so long? The Norman model was faster than that."

"Well... We want this one done right. And to allow... A little configuration here and there."

"Ahhh. More complex. Fair enough." Getting up, Ohara looked around, "I see a quite sturdy sheet of glass in the way... How dow we get in?"

"The level below us has the field entrances running thoruhg them, as enclosed tunnels. And no, I will not tell you how I got this inner dome made in time."

"Haha, you gotten to know me well." Smiling, Ohara turned on his boots, gently floating through the aisles to a back door held open by one of the drones.

"... Ren's smile was creepy."

"Why, doctor?"

"First time I have seen it so... Genuine." Floating off down after Ohara, Dr Elune giggled excitedly, ready to test their new toys out.

Alex shook their head, and thought quietly as they watched the two have fun. The mega-cpu was underway as well... But that would take a lot longer. And once it was done... This little dome would be nothing in comparison.
