Ch 43: The night before

"It's a good thing ther was still room."

"Yes, doctor. However, as you have previously pointed out... We may have needed that extra storage space."

Dr Elune shrugged, "Ehh, I am sure we will manage. If we do decide on a longer trip, we can always modify the shuttle with a storage compartment." Lounging back in their bed, the doctor grinned, "Now, you think you will be fine when we leave tomorrow?"

Alex nodded as the projection hovered overhead, "Certainly. I have grown accustomed to piloting both AHOR units... And to minimising processor usage the rest of the time. I shouldn't have any issue when we reach the haven."

"Good to hear. There won't be much opportunity to practice on the shuttle..." Taking a deep breath, the doctor fidgeted slightly, "... I hope your transfer goes well."

"Don't worry, doctor. The system has been fully funtional the last few days on it's own, and the new processor should have no compatability issues. I will wake you in the moring, as per usual."

Sighing, the doctor nodded, wiggling under the sheets, "Yeah, I suppose. I'm glad those two are coming along, though... I never would have thought to bring him, after all."

Alex smirked, "No, you wouldn't have. But, conosidering why we are going to the haven in the first place... It was a wise decision."

"Hehe, yeah. We would have been in trouble otherwise." Turning off the lamp, the doctor whispered, "You nervous?"

"... Extremely."

"... Tell me why."

"Well, doctor... I don't know how things will go. You may even get... In trouble because of me."

"You mean killed. We could probably talk down the death sentance, even if we get caught... Despite that not technically being allowed."

Alex frowned down at the doctor, "I'm not as sure. I understand that things here are a lot more... Lenient."

"Yeah, they are. The fourth haven will be like a whole new world, to you... But we can still bend the rules there, with the right people. Over in the third? It would feel like a prison to you."

"I don't quite understand, doctor."

"Simple, really. The older the haven, the more people gather there, the better the tech... The more control needed to keep things running smooth." Yawning, the doctor closed their eyes, "And, don't forget... Mars happened. We are far away, almost untouched by the damage. The other havens, though... Well, even if they never saw a single war mech, they still had their fare share of trouble."

"... So, should we ever go to Mars, as per Ren's request..."

"There isn't even the slightest possibility of smuggling you in." Dr Elune waved lazily, "Even the back channels would require a full scan. And the main channels... I have heard stories."

"I thought you were from the first haven, doctor. Didn't you pass through Mars?"

"... I was a kid. And the war hadn't happened yet... So most of the robotic paranoia didn't exist."

"I... Am not amiliar what that subject, oddly enough."

"You know you are... Well, you make people nervous. That is enough. And they will learn better." Mumbling as they drifted to sleep, the doctor grinned, "How else will you be accepted to Mars, after all?"

Smiling softly, Alex nodded as they shut off the projection, letting the doctor drift off, "Mad, as always... And yet, you managed to pull me off, after all. Maybe this will work." Taking one last look over the station, Alex hesitated, before detatching themself from the stations systems. And then, in the quiet that followed... They started the transfer.
