Chapter 43: A Friend Lost To In Time (part 2)

MANY DAYS AGO.......

Matthew could feel it in the air, Valerian told him to run, and so he did.

Both of them ran through the woods, but they were stopped by him, standing in front of them.....

A giant grizzly bear stood before them, growling irritably.

Matthew shivered and turned to the green witch. "H - how do we g - g -get past him?" Valerian turned to him and slowly pulled something out of her pocket. It appeared to be a blue bottle. Matthew looked at her disapprovingly. "Can't you just.....teleport or something?"

Valerian shook her head. "Not right now, my energy's too weak."

"Oh, well great!" Matthew complained. Valerian gave him a glare. "Just trust me!" Matthew nodded.

When the bear charged, Valerian threw the bottle, and it set the grizzly on fire. The bear collapsed as it cried in agony. It eventually stopped screaming. Valerian looked at Matthew.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

"Dinner, then? You cook for us!" Valerian ordered.

Matthew wheezed.

..............................................

Valerian fell asleep right after dinner, while Matthew kept watching for more bears.

Why can't he be strong like her? He thought to himself. He wanted to produce fire like that. Suddenly, an idea popped in his head. Matthew slowly turned to the crystal wrapped over Valerian's neck.

He cautiously took it off of her, while saying, "Please don't let me be caught, please don't let me be caught."

He succeeded, finally it was in his hands! He planned to borrow it for an hour, hopefully the crystal will make him feel more than just confident and powerful. He wanted magic!

He snapped his fingers and suddenly, a tiny flame appeared. "Whoa!" He whispered. He aimed the flame at the fire and shot it forth, making the fire grow bigger. Alerted and startled, he looked at Valerian, but she was still asleep.

Matthew clutched his heart with relief. "Phew." He held the crystal and looked down at it. The beautiful masterpiece he wanted to keep forever.

No, he was just borrowing it, he needed to give it back.

Or maybe, she was getting tired of carrying it? He can help.

But, she'll kill you! He argued with himself.

Maybe, we don't have to be in the same place as her.

"Hopefully, Evelynne will be fine without this for a little while longer...." He convinced himself.

He smiled at the thought of that. He left Valerian there as he walked toward the castle with the crystal in his hand.
