Ch. 82 - Epilogue (Part 1)

A few hours had passed since the game characters' retreat, and Nathan and Lilith took Jack's death rather well. They were feasting on a meal prepared by Lilith.

"Man, you don't know how much I've been missing this," Nathan stated as he gazed at the dish before them. "We had to scrounge for food when we were couped up in that abandoned building."

The dish, at least by Lilith's standards, was simple as she served Nathan and herself a hamburger. It had all the components of a burger: the toasted buns keeping everything together, the tomatoes, lettuce, and onions all adding colors, the juicy, seasoned beef, and the melted cheese that ran down.

Complementing the main meal was a side of french fries with ranch sauce in a dipping cup.

"I went pretty light on the oil," Lilith responded. "I don't want you getting fat, after all."

"Heh, with the training we do with the NPC, there's no way we could get fat," Nathan said. "I'll be putting on more muscle than I already have."

Lilith's cheeks flushed red as she blushed, likely thinking about an ever more muscular Nathan.

"Bleh, do you guys only flirt with each other?" The developer, who was in the living room, questioned. "It's pretty cringe seeing this."

"Tch, why are you even here still? Everyone else has gone home, so couldn't you have followed suit!?" Nathan retorted. "This ain't even your home, and you aren't welcome here."

"Man, you're taking this mission failure well, huh?" The developer asked as he dodged Nathan's retort. "Other than Charles, the rest of my game characters are taking Jack's death pretty hard."

"Meh, they'll have to get over it sooner or later. I'll never understand why they're so depressed," Nathan responded as he dipped a fry in the sauce and took a bite. "Especially Olivia. You'd think she would finally be her person after her experience with Ada, but for some reason, she became obsessed with Jack."

"I think she fell in love with him after he saved her from execution," Lilith speculated. "At least, that's what Zack told me."

"...I guess she just can't live for herself. Speaking of Ada, I watched the news," Nathan commented as he shifted his gaze back to the developer. "Looks like she played a part in Jack's death. She gave the United Kingdom information about us, was it?"

"Oh, that's what they said, huh?" The developer questioned.

"They knew about Jack's durability negators, Zack's explosive pouch, and all our blessings and skills," Nathan continued. "I never recalled telling that woman anything about us, so how the hell would she know, developer?"

Nathan gazed at the developer with bloodshot eyes and a dangerous glare.

"Heh, why are you looking at me like that?" The developer asked as he feigned ignorance. "You're acting like I have anything to do with this."

"...It doesn't matter. I never expected you to tell me anything anyway," Nathan replied. "I just need to protect my Lilith and get strong enough to kill you."

"Y-Your Lilith?" Lilith repeated as she blushed.

"U-Uh...these fries are amazing!" In an attempt to change the conversation, Nathan began eating faster. Simultaneously, the developer went through the door. "This is--cough* cough*"

"D-Don't eat so fast!" Lilith, who got up and went behind Nathan, advised as she smacked his back to help clear his throat.

Ah, so he finally left. He wasn't as annoying as usual. That's good. Nathan thought as Lilith was helping him. But I have to do something about Ada. I need to hurry up and kill her. I hope Zack and Olivia will get over this fast enough.

As the developer left their yard, only one thought filled his mind.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

Enjoy the 'rest' while it lasts, you too. The developer thought. I'm going to be a lot harder on my characters.

Zack was at the home the developer gave him, sulking on the couch. As he sulked, Zack recollected the times he would watch movies with Jack. He recalled Jack's maniacal laughter upon enjoyment from the violent movies they watched.

With furrowed eyebrows, gritted teeth, and audible sniffling, Zack started to break down.

"I-It's all...my fault. Instead of killing Ada when I had the chance...I let myself...get played around...by her. My uselessness... led to my bro's death," Zack muttered to himself as a tear flowed from his eye. "Here I thought...I was finally useful after helping Nathan kill...that super soldier. My parents were right. Ada was right...I'm just...useless."

As Zack broke down, he lay in the fetal position on the couch to wallow in his depression.

I'm sorry, Olivia...If only I had killed Ada. Zack thought. You could have fully been liberated from her.

Olivia, of course, was just as depressed. As she worked on poisons in the lab that the developer gave her as a fulfillment of her wish, she suddenly slinked to the floor.

"A-Ada...this is all...your fault. Why can't you get...out of my life...?" Olivia muttered as tears flowed from her eyes. "W-Why must you...take...my life...from me!"

The Dexter siblings, or the remaining ones at large, occupied a secluded warehouse. Harvey and Amelia Dexter, the last two mafia bosses, were watching the news report of the chaos that unfolded earlier today.

"Heh, Jack turned this place upside down. There's no end to the destruction and death," Harvey commented. "Well, that's karma...for what they have done to our family."

"Nah, this isn't enough karma. We need to destroy all of them," Amelia said. "They killed Theodore and incarcerated Luna...they deserve nothing less."

"I completely agree, sister," Harvey commented. "We just need to heal fully and rebuild our forces..."

"I just hope Amber Hoss and the man who killed my brother are still alive and not slaughtered by Jack," Amelia responded. "So, I can make them suffer--"

Amid their conversation, the warehouse door flew open, which shocked the siblings. Entering the warehouse were none other than Leon, Charlotte, and Nolan.

"H-Huh!? Who are you, people!?" Amelia questioned as she was alarmed by their presence. Suddenly, sparks of fire crackled from her hand. "I will kill you--"

"No, you can't push yourself," Harvey reminded. "You aren't fully healthy yet."

"Tch, too bad. We don't know who these people are," Amelia stated as sparks came together into flames around her hand. "It's too la--"

Ada, the person who was on the game characters' minds, casually walked in. Upon seeing her, a shocked expression came over the faces of the Dexter siblings.

"W-What!? President Ada!?" Harvey questioned as he stood up.

"Wow, so this is where you guys hid yourselves," Ada casually said as she looked around. "You hid pretty well. It's also not too bad here."

"W...Why are you here!?" Amelia questioned. "Get to the point, or I'll fire! I don't care if you're a president!"

"Tch! Watch your damn tongue and your tone!" Charlotte snapped at her. Nolan and Leon's furrowed eyebrows matched Charlotte's annoyance. Their impression of the siblings already vastly decreased due to Amelia's threat towards Ada."

"Don't worry, it's natural for stray cats to be hostile towards strangers," Ada said.

"H-Huh?"

"I'll get to the point. I've been told that Amber was the one who murdered Jack," Ada said. "And Kreuger, the one who killed your brother, helped her. They are both alive."

"W-Why are you telling us this!?" Harvey asked.

"They are much stronger, especially Amber," Ada continued. "With the mafia destroyed, you have no minions to help you. You have no hope of beating her, but you want revenge, right?"

"...You want...to help us?" Harvey questioned. "As if...we'd trust someone allied with that bastard Chief of Defense and the military."

"All you do is use that worthless mouth to slander our Ada," Charlotte said. "Those people aren't Ada's allies. They are simply her dogs."

"What are you talking about?"

"Listen, I truly want to help you. You both have given your all to defend this country but never once received any commendation from anyone. Then Amber came along and took so much from you. I truly feel nothing but sadness for you," Ada explained as tears flowed from her eyes, much to the siblings' surprise. "So, I want to be the first person to reach out and give you something for everything you've gone through. If you take my hand, I can give you a chance to get everything you want."

Ada stretched her hand out to them and had a genuine smile on her face. They were speechless by Ada's words and personality. The sunlight shone through the open door and onto Ada's back as the siblings gazed at her.

In their eyes, the radiance gave Ada a rather divine look.

"Well, don't keep the president waiting for an answer," Leon stated with a smile. "Hurry up and say yes."

"...Alright."
