Ch. 37 - Thankless Job

Damn government dog...

"If you are done with your insults, you should focus on fighting me!" Amber suggested.

"Tsk, with pleasure," Harvey suggested before pulling Amber towards him with an air gust. Amber's unphased expression revealed that she expected him to do that, likely due to experiencing that more than once before.

When Amber closed in, she performed a downward swipe with her arm, which interrupted any follow-ups from Harvey after dragging her. The swipe momentarily left a trail of Amber's gleaming energy.

Harvey weaved it and imitated Amber, with a downward hand motion that was less powerful than hers. His motion summoned another gust of wind, forcing Amber to the ground. She, however, resisted the force; she never fell flat on the ground but fell on one knee.

Though she resisted the brunt of the force, she was still momentarily stunned by the wind force, allowing Harvey to strike her in the chin with a high kick. As his boot soles connected with Amber's chin, the swoosh sounds of heavy wind gusts were audible.

This boosted Harvey's striking strength as Amber was launched across the freezing area.

The swoosh sounds of wind gusts were once again audible as Harvey ran towards Amber while she soared in the air. His movement speed surpassed the sound barrier, and a sonic boom was created.

Fast! Amber thought as she blocked a straight punch from Harvey.

Amber wasn't even allowed to land before another gust of wind blew her into a palm strike to the gut by Harvey. With the enhancement of wind force, he blasted Amber straight into the wall, leaving significant and visible cracks.

Amber then fell to the ground and coughed up a bit of blood.

"As you can see, I can use wind force in many ways. It doesn't take up much of my stamina like my other techniques, so I've trained with that the most," Harvey explained with a smirk. "You needn't be surprised. This is the result of four years worth of experience in the Enlightenment Program."

"You were...in the program for that long. You were a soldier for four years," Amber responded as she stood back up. "You've been serving this country and protecting its civilians. Then why... why did you turn to a criminal life?"

"...You want to know?" Harvey questioned. Instead of continuing the conversation, Harvey clenched his fist in preparation for dragging her again. However, Amber anticipated that and fired a gleaming energy ball from her index finger.

Surprised by the sudden attack, Harvey narrowly avoided it. It became clear to him that the ball was just a feint, as Amber quickly rushed and punched him in the chest. She attempted to follow up with another energy ball, but Harvey acted quickly with a side swipe and tossed Amber away with a wind gust.

Harvey covered his mouth and coughed up blood.

Ugh, her punches are so strong. Is she stronger than Theodore? Harvey thought. I'm not as tough as my family members, so I can't let her get too much more.

Harvey watched as Amber recovered herself and prepared to engage him in combat again.

Tch, why isn't the freezing temperature affecting her that much? Harvey thought. There's ice growing on her limbs, too!

Harvey and Amber engaged each other in fast-paced combat. Harvey did his best to trip up and perform combination attacks on Amber with his wind-based attacks, while Amber did the same with her strikes and energy ball attacks.

"Look at you. Fighting so desperately to help your country when you'll end up like me eventually," Harvey suddenly remarked, which surprised Amber.

"What are you talking about?"

"Amelia, Theodore, Luna, and myself. We were all like you. When we became soldiers, we had the same passion of risking our lives for the nation," Harvey stated while moving around the area with his wind-enhanced speed to avoid Amber's attacks. "We trained our blessings until we became the very best. We even excelled in every mission given to us."

His speed! It's hard to catch him! Amber thought.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Meanwhile, a miniature tornado began to form in the palm of Harvey's right hand.

"We saved countless people in the past, so why!? Why has the monarch never given us any commendation, any reward for our hard work!?" Harvey raised his voice in visible anger. Simultaneously, the ice forming in the environment began to spread, along with the ice on Amber's body. "We watched so many of our comrades lose their lives to let civilians continue their happy lives, but neither the monarch nor the military gave us anything! We were just expendable pawns to them!"

Harvey dashed towards Amber, and she simultaneously was forced towards him by a wind gust to her back. Reacting quickly, Amber attempted to blast him. Before unleashing the energy ball, Amber's arm was suddenly flung to the side via a wind gust.

"Wha--" Before Amber could do anything else, Harvey put the miniature tornado onto Amber's right arm. The tornado quickly grew and covered her entire arm.

CRACK! CRACK!

Almost immediately, the cracking and popping sounds of bone were audible as Amber's arm was being twisted in the tornado.

"AAHHHH!!!" Amber screamed as her muscle fibers began to tear and spill blood. As the tornado dissipated, Harvey followed up with a thrust kick to Amber's stomach, sending her across the room.

Amber's mangled right arm was seen. It had spiraled several times, the flesh torn apart and covered in blood. It was obvious that the arm wouldn't be useable in this fight any longer.

"Being a blessed soldier is a thankless job. No one gave us anything, even after all our sacrifices, so my relatives and I vowed to only look out for each other," Harvey said. "Just as she never gave us anything, so will Queen Isabella do to you guys. You took this mission to help people that care not about you."

While on both knees, Amber held her head down.

"It seems you finally understand. But, my family comes first, so you have to pay for every--"

BOOM!

Amber suddenly blew the ground up, causing it to explode and releasing a cloud of smoke.

"Tsk, what!?" Harvey uttered as his vision became obscured by the smoke. Amber used this to her advantage and executed a headbutt on Harvey through the smoke.

"AAHHH!!!" Harvey yelled as blood flew from his nose. With her left arm, Amber followed up with a haymaker to Harvey's face. This packed enough force to shatter the ice around her arm. He was then flung across the room and slammed into the wall.

It hurts...It hurts so much! Amber thought as she gritted her teeth in pain. My arm's still connected, but it feels like it's not!

"You never received anything from the Queen? Don't give me that!" Amber yelled in anger. "I thought you once had a soldier's heart, but you only served your country with an ulterior motive!"

Harvey was swaying from side to side as he listened. He had a significant and swollen bruise on his jaw, along with a heavily bleeding nose from Amber's strike and headbutt.

"The only reward you need as a soldier is the smiles of civilians knowing that you saved them! Why do you criminals pursue your desires over others' wellbeing!?"

Ugh, it hurts so much...but not nearly as the day I lost my family... Amber thought. As long as I am alive, I will never let these evildoers go!

"You...You and your childish way of thinking!" Harvey uttered in response. Harvey placed his palms together, and something akin to blackened clouds manifested. Much to Amber's surprise, she noticed a flashing red color from the manifested cloud.

BZZZZTTT!!!

Through the cumulonimbus-like clouds, bright flashing lightning soared through and instantaneously struck Amber in the chest. Banging, crashing thunder also roared furiously moments after.

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" Amber screamed at the top of her lungs as red, blue, and yellow colors alternated on her from the colors of her blessing and the lightning. Her body erratically moved, akin to having a seizure for a few moments, before Amber fell to the ground.

"Huff, finally," Harvey said with a relieved expression. "There's no way she's surviving that...I can finally go--"

"W-Where...do you...think you're...going...?" Amber questioned weakly. Despite the heavy burns she sustained, despite her entire body covered in blood and barely standing straight, Amber still got back up.

"What the...how!?" Harvey questioned with widened eyes. She survived a lightning strike...and is still conscious!? Is she that tough!? "How the hell are you still alive!?"

"As long...as I'm alive, I will...defeat you...evildoers..." Amber declared.

"Tch! Let's see if you'll survive another then!" Harvey stated as black clouds formed in his hands again.

Shoot...I can barely move. Amber thought. If I don't move out of the way now...I might die!"

Right before he fired the lightning strike, a loud bang comparable to an explosion was audible.

"What the hell was that!?" Harvey wondered as he shifted his gaze to the source. He then noticed a massive hole in the wall, with two individuals hopping through.

Who the hell...?

Before Harvey's eyes, one of them disappeared, and his arm was forcefully grabbed.

Standing beside him was the Queen Deathbringer, who held onto his wrist. Simultaneously, Kreuger approached Amber.

"Y...You guys?" Amber asked with a mixture of surprise and relief.

"Dammit! Let me go!" Harvey demanded as he swiped his arm, forcing the super soldier to be struck by wind force. Much to his surprise, the Queen Deathbringer barely moved.

"What!?"

"Sorry, we came a bit late," The Queen Deathbringer apologized. Kreuger looked at Amber's condition and closed his eyes momentarily.

"Tsk, I finally found an enemy," Kreuger said, his voice dripping annoyance. "I'm gonna make you pay for putting me on this cat-and-mouse chase!"
