Ch. 19 - Challenge

With every passing day, the streets of England still endured constant surveillance to combat the increased crime rates. The rumbling noise of military vehicles and the usual sight of soldiers became the norm for civilians going about their daily lives.

With the spiked crime rates due to criminals becoming brazen, and the heavy surveillance of the military, the two sides had found common grounds. They would not have done this if it wasn't for one man's appearance - Jack Knight.

Despite being a wanted man who started all this mess, Jack was nowhere to be found since his attack on the Hoss family.

Around a dining table in their home sat both Nathan and Lilith. They both had a bowl of food in front of them.

As Nathan gazed at the food, his nostrils were struck by the delectable aroma rising from the dish. The golden brown shredded chicken and the gooey, creamy melted cheese flowing on top made Nathan drool slightly. The sight of the meal was further enhanced by the shredded cilantro littered on top.

"W-What might...this dish be, now?" Nathan asked as he wiped away the drool from his mouth.

"It's a chicken tamale pie!" Lilith responded. "It's a simple dish, but I hope you'll like it."

This is simple? Nathan asked himself. This is far better than anything I can create! Amazing!

"You don't have to worry about that. I'll enjoy anything that you make me." Nathan assured as he masked his amazement with a charming smile, which caused Lilith's cheeks to flush red.

"I-I see," Lilith stuttered.

With that said, they both dug in their meals. It was clear to Lilith that Nathan enjoyed it, seeing how quickly and hastily he ate. This, of course, put a smile on her face. Who wouldn't be happy seeing someone they love eat your meal like that?

"...You know Nathan, I'm happy right now," Lilith said as she paused eating.

"Hmm, what do you mean?"

"It's just...us sitting together and enjoying a meal. I never thought we'd be able to do that, which scared me," Lilith explained. "I'm so glad I'm here with you...by your side."

Hearing that, Nathan looked away shyly, his cheeks flushed red.

"Y-Yeah, me too--"

"You'll never walk in this town again, you hear me!!!" Zack's yells were audible as he and Jack invaded the dining room where Nathan and Lilith were eating.

"Ha! You'll never kill me, sheriff!" Jack yelled as he waved around a wooden dagger. Simultaneously, Zack carried a wooden pistol. Nathan and Lilith watched in surprise at their sudden outburst.

"Bang! Bang!" Zack yelled as he pretended to fire at Jack.

"Ugh!" Jack uttered while staggering backward, pretending to be shot.

"Ha! I win--" Zack declared but was interrupted by Jack tossing the dagger while falling to the ground, bouncing off his chest.

"Ugh!" Zack uttered as he held his chest while staggering. "You...got...me--"

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS DOING!?" Nathan angrily questioned.

"We're bored, mate," Jack responded as he lay on the floor. "So we gotta improvise."

"Don't you guys have houses of your own!?" Nathan asked. "So why are you still here!?"

"If I go home, then the annoying Olivia will come and pester me," Jack replied. "It'll get me knackered very quickly, mate."

Zack frowned upon hearing Jack's reasoning.

"Don't say that, bro. Don't you think she likes you?" Zack asked.

"Haha! That's a good one, mate!" Jack chuckled. Zack simply sighed in response to Jack's obliviousness.

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

"I don't even care. You guys are interrupting our damn meal!" Nathan yelled.

"Forget that. Can't you see that we're bored as hell?" Jack said. "You agreed with screwing over England, but all you've been doing is staying home and training with the NPC."

"Tsk...is it so hard for you to just wait?" Nathan asked. "Not everyone's as powerful as you!"

"I'm tired of waiting. Even Charles is tired too. He's been going around in hopes of killing strong buggers or whatever but newsflash, all the strong buggers in this country are dead!" Jack said. "I'm tired too! I wanna litter the UK with corpses, just like this country!"

Lilith couldn't help but gaze at Jack with disdain as she heard his twisted desires.

"Sigh, goddammit. It's been two weeks or so since you were seen in England and crime rates have increased heavily. I've been keeping up with the news. The country had boosted its surveillance because of you. The other criminals taking advantage of this would be pesky for law enforcement." Nathan explained. "Maybe the criminals will get outta control and cause casualties on the law enforcement's side. That would mean fewer people for you to worry about while you do your...rampage, understand?"

"And what if it doesn't go out of control?" Jack countered. "I know you're the smart one, but that would be a waste, ya know."

In annoyance, Nathan began to rub his forehead.

"Ugh, we were having a wonderful time in this house after completing that damn mission the bastard developer gave," Nathan said. "But because you decided to go to England, we're back again. We're back again in the trenches, Jack. The least you can do is wait a bit more. If you're so bored, then go kill US civilians or whatever heinous shit you like."

There was a moment of silence as Jack gazed upon Nathan.

"Sigh, alright, I guess," Jack said. "You're no fun at all."

Just hurry up and get out of my house, Jack...I don't want you near Lilith.

Nathan's prayers were answered, as Jack left abruptly; likely to kill civilians as Nathan advised out of annoyance.

"Telling him to kill US civilians is kinda cold, Nathan," Lilith said.

"Uh, well, I--"

"Don't worry, I know you were trying to get rid of him," Lilith assured. "I don't like when a dangerous person like him is near you. Maybe...I'd have said the same thing as you to get him to leave."

"Well, I'm glad you understand," Nathan responded.

A frown formed on Zack's face as he heard their dislike for Jack.

"C'mon, guys. The developer would want us to get along," Zack said.

"Is that right?" Nathan sarcastically said.

"Speaking of the developer. Where is he now?" Zack asked.

"He said he was going for a walk or something," Nathan answered.

On the edge of a mountain stood the developer and his trusty NPC. The gentle breeze fanned upon their clothes, giving them ripples. The developer's slick back hair also flowed well with the wind.

"It doesn't matter how long I've been alive for," The developer said. "The one good thing I can say about this world is its lovely breeze.

"Yes, you're right, developer." The NPC agreed.

"It's a shame I won't be enjoying it like this for long," The developer added.

While they took in the scenery and wind, a radiant yellow light appeared behind the developer. As if sensing the light, the developer's demeanor became negative.

"...What do we have here, now?" The developer asked.

The light was without appearance, all except for a few features. Bright feathered wings like an angel's and a face resembling a woman's but without any mouth or nose, just a yellow bandage wrapped where their eyes should be. Those were the only features formed amid the light.

The features were oddly similar to the angelic figure in the pictures on the walls of Amber's old home.

"W-Who is that?" The NPC asked as he turned around to the light. Although his mask covered his face, his tone revealed his confusion.

"Oh, you can see her?" The developer asked. "Well, it makes sense. Considering who you are."

"We have noticed your transgressions," The light suddenly and strangely spoke. The pitch of the voice belonged to a woman. "You have committed transgressions which interfere with the balance of the world."

"Yeah, is that what you came from so far to tell me?" The developer said with a smug smile. "You think I don't know that?"

"Your actions have been judged by me," The light continued. "To cease this gross injustice, I have placed an avatar who will act as judge and executioner against your people."

"What?"

"It is as you've heard. A human has received my power and will use it to deliver justice upon your tribe of evildoers," The light explained. This in turn caused the developer to become shocked.

"I knew the gods would intervene soon...but why did it have to be you?" The developer asked. "To think a primordial god is someone I'd have to worry about soon...dammit."

"...I'm not sure what you are planning, but your tribe won't be able to escape the hands of justice by my daughter," The light said in a softer voice. "You should cease your actions and live the rest of your days in peace."

"Ha, there's no way I'll give up that easily," The developer remarked. "I've worked so long for my goals. There's no way your little 'daughter' will beat my game characters, even if that person received powers from you."

"Fine, I suppose it will be a little challenge then," The light declared. "I hope you'll come to your senses when justice prevails, and it will prevail very soon."

"...Enough, shoo," The developer uttered as he fanned away the light, causing it to scatter in several directions and lose its form.

"How unfortunate that things became this way, isn't it?" The light asked as it dispersed. "Things were fine a very long time ago, disgraced god."

"How very unfortunate indeed, Themis," The developer responded. You just had to call me by that alias, huh?

"So, what should we do now, developer?" The NPC inquired.

"Isn't it obvious? We continue with the game." The developer replied. "A new mission has arrived, after all."
