Ch. 28 - Counter

Amid the preparations for their assault on the mafia, things turned to the origin of this madness; the country of the United States, specifically Ada.

She was seen in a well-decorated room, doing makeup in front of a mirror. Judging by the white robe she wore with nothing else, and Leon's shirtless self resting in a bed, Ada had...enjoyed herself.

RING! RING!

Beside her makeup kit, Ada's smartphone pinged as she received a message. Curious about its contents, she paused her makeup time and checked.

As she perused the message's contents, a devious smile formed on Ada's face. "Oh my...how interesting,"

"What's wrong, Ada?" Leon questioned.

"Chief Barry and his soldiers will be attacking London's mafia," Ada responded.

"I thought they wanted our help to get rid of Jack, but it seems they got distracted, huh?" Leon said. "Now they're rudely leaving you waiting."

"Well, the Chief and Prime Minister have been updating me on the affairs of their country, and Jack has shown up there for whatever reason. Also, since the crime rates exponentially increased, they've had their hands full, I suppose," Ada explained. "There wasn't any opportune time for me to involve myself."

"Well, they should always make time for you," Leon stated, which caused Ada to chuckle slightly.

"Don't worry, from the looks of it, they're going to wrap up their 'business' with the mafia. After which, I can kick-start my plan of making the developer...making Nathan suffer."

"You're so kind. Even though the Prime Minister of England is putting you secondary, you're letting them fix their problems before," Leon said.

"Of course, I'm considerate like that," Ada replied. "Although it makes me wonder...if the London mafia has such good assets to cause the military to act this way..."

After Chief Barry had given the rundown on the mafia's main forces, he had sent his troops to prepare for the raid later. With high-powered firearms, plated armor, combat vests, and gear, the soldiers ensured they were adequately equipped to tackle the momentous task of taking down the mafia organization.

The blessed soldiers did the same. Everyone prepared themselves physically and mentally for their tasks. Still, anxiety and tension developed in a few, namely Amber and Aiden, as this was the biggest mission they'd ever embarked on in their lives.

"...I hope everything works out smoothly later," Amber said with a shaky tone.

"Hmm? Is that nervousness I hear?" Kreuger teased.

"You can't blame her. Even I'm nervous too," Aiden responded, immediately going to Amber's side.

"Well, it's natural that you guys would be nervous since it's your first time with something like this, I bet," Kreuger stated. "But for me, this is just another day."

"See, this is why you don't make friends," Aiden retorted. "Your blunt and almost narcissistic attitude makes it difficult for anyone in the Enlightenment Program to want to befriend you."

Hearing this, a pulsating artery formed on Kreuger's forehead. Amber's jaw also dropped in shock.

"Tsk, you think I care about that stuff!?"

"Damn, you guys are so noisy!" Altius interjected angrily. "There's no damn need for nervousness in this stupid raid!"

"Easy for you to say..." Aiden muttered.

I know anxiety is just an obstacle, but it's hard not to feel anything... Amber thought.

Altius facepalmed as he approached and stood face-to-face with the duo.

"Remember what I told you, Amber? I hate that this society has forced the next generation to clean up our mistakes," Altius questioned. "So as long as you stay close by, you won't need to force yourself on anything. We older folks will clean up our messes."

"Older folks? I'm just twenty-five," Kreuger corrected.

"Aw, shut it..."

Hearing his words, Amber and Aiden felt rather encouraged.

"Yeah, you're right...we aren't alone, so we don't have to worry!" Aiden agreed. "And let's not forget about my blessing!"

That's true, but because of what god gave me, I have to fight to my fullest without fear. Amber internally declared. I have to deliver justice to those evildoers...

"C'mon, they're probably ready by now," Altius assumed. "So, let's get the hell out of here and complete this mission."

"Agreed," Kreuger replied.

As they all agreed with Altius's assumption, they exited the building they occupied. Immediately after reaching the outside, they were greeted by several armored vehicles and soldiers.

On the topic of armored vehicles, Harold Lucas, Amber's hitman, was seen in an armored car driven by a soldier. With handcuffs on his wrists, Harold was likely being transferred to a correctional facility.

"Conspiracy to murder of two soldiers, property damage, and other serious crimes...not mentioning your previous crimes and murders, you're gonna be in prison for a long time," The soldier taunted. "It's a good thing the Chief will be eradicating the stain that's the mafia today. You can spend the rest of your life in a special prison with your group."

Likely due to his unhealed injuries (as seen with his bandages) that made him weak or his annoyance at the soldier's talking, but Harold didn't bother to respond.

"Tsk, not responding? So boring," The soldier said before focusing on driving. The drive was peaceful without any talking. Of course, that peace didn't last too long.

BAM!

Suddenly, Harold performed a double downward axe strike to the top of the unsuspecting soldier's head as he drove. Due to the nature of Harold's blessing, orange sparks emitted from his attack. The force of the strike violently smashed the soldier's face into the steering wheel and caused the horn to go off.

Almost immediately, the vehicle went off-road, before crashing into a nearby tree.

The barely conscious, bloody-faced soldier turned around weakly to see Harold stealing his phone.

"H...How did you...remove the...handcu--" The soldier uttered before falling unconscious.

"Ugh..." With a few groans of pain, Harold exited the car. He too had sustained damages from that sudden crash, as evident from his wounded head. Despite his wounds, he began to dial on the soldier's phone.

It rang a few times before finally connecting.

"...Who is this," Harvey's cold voice was audible on the other side.

"Ugh, It's me, boss," Harold strained to say.

"Harold? What happened to you? Why are you calling from an unknown number?"

"Listen, boss....there's no time. You're going to be attacked by the military..." Harold stated.

"...What? When?" Harvey asked.

"Later today, sir."

"...And how sure are you of this taking place?"

"A soldier...ran his mouth off. It also makes sense...the Chief kept telling me...that the alliance would be over, while he interrogated me," Harold explained. Although Harvey maintained his usual cold and silent demeanor, he understood the weight of what Harold was telling him. "You have to act fast, sir."

"Alright, thanks..." Harvey said before hanging up.

"What happened?" Amelia inquired.

"Get ready to leave, Amelia," Harvey advised, much to her confusion. "Things are going to get noisy."

Noisy was right, as no less than an hour later, armored vehicles filled the streets as they approached the infrastructure that is the mafia property. Of course, these vehicles were filled with Amber and her fellow soldiers, all focused on completing their goals.

As they approached their destination, however, an unexpected situation took place.

BOOM!

An ear-splitting explosion engulfed a vehicle after a rocket soared toward it. This immediately caused the rest to stop suddenly or make desperate maneuvers, as the soldiers quickly realized they were getting attacked.

"What!? We're under attack!?" A soldier yelled. "But how!?"

This sudden attack on the start certainly didn't help Amber's anxiety, especially with the thoughts of those soldiers' deaths surfacing in her mind.

N-No way! Did those people die!? Amber thought with an extremely perturbed expression. But how could they be prepared for this!? How could they possibly know!?
