Ch. 12 - Train Heist (Part 1)

The sun cast a rosy tinge over the morning sky as another day had dawned. The choir of birdsongs complemented the flurry of early-morning civilian activity. This activity extended to an unspecified railway yard in America, where several locomotives and rail vehicles were kept parallel to each other and parked on railway tracks.

Several soldiers donning military combat uniforms were loading the wagons of a specific train with metallic crates.

"That's the last of the crates," A soldier stated as he stacked several crates in the train's wagon.

"Sigh, I can't believe we got called out so early to load a bunch of damned crates," Another soldier spoke. "Let's just hurry up and get back now."

"Uh, how can you guys be so easy-going about all this? We're responsible for securing something as valuable as these serums," A third, more nervous female soldier retorted. "What if we get attacked?"

"Get attacked? What kind of stupid question is that?" The soldier questioned before pointing several wagons down the train's interior. "Don't you see who we got protecting us?"

The female soldier shifted her gaze to where the soldier pointed and noticed two individuals casually lounging around. Their pearl white military combat uniforms made it clear that this duo was in another league compared to the soldiers who assisted in loading the crates. These men were both super soldiers.

"The president has recently resumed the production of super soldiers, and those two are some successful experiments," The soldier explained to his female partner. "Of course, we'd receive adequate security while transporting serums."

Sigh, but can we rely on super soldiers? The female soldier pondered. Weren't they massacred by two S-Class criminals? Are they as good as we think?

"Jack the Ripper is dead and the status of the battle-crazed killer isn't even known. No one knows if he's even alive," The soldier continued. "Who else in their right mind would attack us? Let's get on with this and go."

"Sigh, okay."

The soldier couldn't be more confident but wrong, as Zack waited patiently for this day. The train tracks extended to a vast, dry, barren land where Zack stood idly by. With sweat streaming down his forehead, Zack utilized a shovel to dig a hole in the land beside the train tracks. He also had a jet-black backpack on his back.

RING, RING!

The buzzing of his phone interrupted Zack's digging and he quickly jumped to answer it.

"Hello?" Zack said.

"Yo, Zack. Is everything going well over there?" On the other side of the phone, Octavius questioned. "The train will arrive in less than half an hour, bro."

"Yeah, I'm pretty much done," Zack responded as he removed the backpack from his back. After opening the carry-on, Zack held it over the hole he created in the land. Turning it upside down, several dynamites, grenades, and other explosives fell from the backpack and into the hole. "I've made all the preparations, anyway. I just gotta refill the hole."

"It's a shame I'm not allowed to help you," Octavius stated. "Rose has it out for you, huh."

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

"It seems like she knows me from somewhere," Zack remarked as he started to fill the explosive-filled hole with the shovel and the dirt. "Unfortunately, I don't remember her, though."

"Oh? So that's why she's on your ass all of a sudden," Octavius said.

"Maybe I wronged her somehow," Zack responded. "She might be all bitchy towards me, but she doesn't seem to want me dead. Who knows, maybe I could become friends with her."

"Sigh, you've always been like this," Octavius said. "I remember you whining about wanting to make friends--"

"Alright! You don't need to bring up unnecessary stuff," The flustered Zack exclaimed. "Let me focus on this stupid mission."

"Haha, make sure you don't destroy all the serums with the explosives," Octavius advised. "If you want to leave a good impression on Rose."

"Uh huh, I'm hanging up now, later," Zack remarked. Keeping true to his words, Zack disconnected the call after giving his agreement. Although the land seemed tampered with upon close inspection, Zack ensured the explosives were covered. Octavius said I should try to salvage some of the serums. That's good, it would have been much harder to save them all with my blessing. Zack pondered. Now it's time to wait, I suppose.

Nearly thirty minutes had passed, and Octavius was correct about when the train would pass. The train thundered down the tracks at subsonic speeds, unaware of what Zack had in store for it.

Zack, who waited at a cliff's edge, noticed the oncoming locomotive.

Here we go. Zack thought as he began rummaging in his backpack.

While the locomotive driver piloted the train, he strangely noticed a bright and gleaming glow far ahead.

"Huh? What's that?" The driver muttered. "Is that the sun glare or something--"

BOOOM!!!

The sparkle he noticed instantly erupted into a gigantic explosion from the ground as if it were a massive trench explosion. The roaring noise of the blast surprised not only the driver but also the soldiers and even the super soldier duo occupying the train.

The explosion violently released a burst of air which slammed into the speeding locomotive.

"WHAT THE!?" One of the super soldiers exclaimed in shock as they stood up. No sooner had they stood up in shock than they lost the balance in their legs. The regular military personnel had no time to react, as everyone felt the train turning onto its side.

"AAAHHHHHH!!!!" The screams of the soldiers and driver were audible as the train fell right on its side. Not only was the concussive force of the explosion enough to disturb the train's balance, but it also completely obliterated a large portion of the land...and the train tracks.

Sparks emitted from the train wheels as the train still moved at a high rate of speed while turning over. Banging sounds were audible as the train wagons crashed into the ground before the entire locomotive ended up in the resulting crater.

The one responsible for this 'firework,' as he'd call it, was casually strolling up. Zack seemed to have taken out after rummaging throughout his backpack a balaclava ski mask, as his face was completely covered and leaving his eyes visible.

Yikes, the crash was pretty freaking terrible. Zack thought. There's no way anyone would come out unscathed from that. I might not need to use any more explosives to defend myself.

Unsurprisingly, the super soldiers were fine from the train crash other than some bruises. The train's interior was a mess, as shards of broken glass from the windows and destroyed objects lay around.

As they got up, they heard the pain-filled groans of their comrades. Profusely bleeding, fractured limbs, and unresponsive soldiers, this disastrous sight visibly frustrated the super soldiers.

"What the hell?" One of the super soldiers exclaimed with furrowed eyebrows. "How the hell did this even happen--"

They shifted their gaze to the outside and noticed Zack approaching the damaged locomotive. Their acute hearing had picked up Zack's footsteps. Their frustration immediately morphed into anger and rage as they quickly rushed outside.

"What!?" Zack uttered in surprise after being confronted by these two. Those uniforms...

"Tsk, are you the bastard that did this!?" One of the super soldiers angrily questioned.

"Uhh..."

"Don't bother interrogating him, Jacob. Interrogation isn't our area of expertise," The other super soldier stated. "There's no way someone wearing a balaclava mask and casually walking up to this wreckage is innocent."

"You're right, Luke," Jacob agreed. "I'm not sure what you hoped to achieve by doing this...maybe it was for the serums. Either way, we're going to kill you."

Damn it! Why didn't I assume that super soldiers wouldn't have been on that train!? The visibly frustrated Zack pondered. And it's two of them! Rose probably knew that something like this would have happened! This has become a lot harder!
