Chapter 17: Mending Weaknesses Part 1

Chapter 17: Mending Weaknesses Part 1

Laura and Karla were preparing the table for lunch. They had especially made a feast today. Though Karla knew nothing about cooking she still helped at setting the table at least. Soon a handsome young man joined them at the moment they were done.

Laura conversed with him some more since she still hadn't properly got to know him. Her daughter only had praises for him when she asked about him earlier after learning that Karla was talking with him before arriving to help her out.

While having lunch she found herself in a pleasant mood as she discovered that this young man was very polite and well-mannered. He was also a sparkling conversationalist. Always keeping her engaged and not letting the mood to dry because of unfamiliarity.

She nodded her head with satisfaction.

After they all finished lunch he suddenly got up and told them that he wanted to give them both a meeting gift. He went back to his room and brought two small gift boxes, giving one to her and Karla. She opened it at the spot on his request and found a plain looking bracelet. It was the perfect size for her wrist.

She wondered how he got the measurement right and when he had the time to prepare the gift since they returned home immediately but decided not to ask since she thought it must have been something he prepared for a future when he would be adopted and the size matching was just a coincidence.

She looked at Karla's gift and sure enough it was another plain looking bracelet with the same measurement but a different color than her own. She thought given Karla's personality she would bluntly say something about the size being a bit big for her slender wrist but surprisingly she had a very happy expression on her face as she caressed it and thanked him.

Laura was a bit surprised at her behavior but then figured that she must have not wanted to come off as rude for complaining over a gift her new family gave. The young man then said with a bit embarrassed tone that he could only prepare such a meager gift and to not pay it much attention if it didn't suit their style.

Laura and Karla both hurriedly replied that they were very happy with these bracelets and Karla even wore it right in front of him before asking him if it looked good on her as she posed a bit. He gave a relieved smile and nodded his head with an admiring gaze. He then glanced at Laura and a hopeful glint could be seen in his eyes which she didn't miss.

So she also wore it and praised his gift as suiting her tastes. After that she told him to expect a return gift tomorrow with Karla tagging along to affirm the statement. They conversed a bit more before starting to clear the table. He helped her and her usually unwilling daughter seemed to happily assist them.

Laura had a pleasant smile on her face as she started to genuinely appreciate his character.

Blue looked outside the window. It was past twelve at night and the entire mansion had fallen asleep.

"Now that it's peaceful and quiet, let's start."

He immediately went to the bathroom attached to his room and started filling up the bathtub. It was in the middle of the night so the sound should have reached their ears but obviously he had taken measures so no sound leaked past the bathroom door. Not only that but all the five senses of a human could be deceived by the meticulous setup he had created. No abnormality could possibly be detected because of it.

His stuff from subspace came in clutch.

With the [Subspace] menu being available from now on and all of his stuff inside it, he could mend most of his true weaknesses. Adhering to his ever cautious nature he immediately striked.

He gave the mother and daughter a gift today.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

Those gifts were anything but simple. Despite looking like any plain bracelets, those two were actually very peculiar ornaments containing frightening effects. As long as any entity of flesh and blood wore them even once its power would seep into the bone marrow of that individual before it became a truly plain bracelet.

From then on their any "part" that could grab "attention" from others would remain in a state of "normalcy" and wouldn't differ from what was considered the opposite party's "expectation" thus making the individual more "obscure".

Those specified commands were actually meant to differentiate per person since every individual was unique and others thought process couldn't be generalized. Those ornaments were made by one of his women in his past life who had immeasurable talent in such a field. Those bracelets directly affect one's cognition and even if someone suspected despite itself then it could only be seen through if the bone marrow had been dug up to check. She was of a very strong and enigmatic branch of the abyss spawn race so her bloodline abilities allowed her to make such a wondrous thing.

Its name was "Hidden in Plain Sight".

As some could guess it was indeed named by him. Those bracelets were actually made on his request. He still had plenty more as he always liked having a stockpile of anything useful whenever he could. Laura's physique was too important so it was a matter of course and Karla being her daughter would surely end up attracting some kind of variable so it was better to nip the trouble in the bud.

One might think Blue had also used it on himself by now but… he didn't!

He had a very different plan that made him uncomfortable since it clashed with his personality of cautiousness equal to paranoia but he had to thoroughly adapt to his new life as a human from now on and this plan was only finalized after he considered all the benefits, drawbacks, personal strength, status and the system.

Blue looked at the bathtub that was almost full and stopped the water.

There were many weaknesses and abnormalities in his body. The biggest one being that his soul and body didn't match thus being in a state of disharmony. At this state if he went to the awakening ceremony that will be presided by players then he would be walking to his death. So he had to eliminate this trouble first.

He took out a bunch of fragrant herbs, dazzling fruits, shimmering leaves, a few bottles of glowing blood, some howling bones of strange beasts along with many other things. He crushed the herbs till it became paste, cut the fruits into pieces and made other necessary preparations before finally scattering the leaves on the bathtub with those other ingredients making an ominous looking medicinal bath with purple smoke rising from it.

He waited half an hour and then took off his clothes and sat inside the bathtub before slowly taking a deep breath as he submerged himself completely.

One minute, two minute, ten minutes and finally twenty five minutes later he resurfaced from the now rapidly depleting concoction in the bathtub as the liquid absorbed in his body through the skin at a visible rate. With the abyss spawn soul slowly influencing his human body daily he naturally had no trouble holding his breath for such a long time inside that pungent and acidic water.

After the bathtub became completely empty Blue started filling up the water again as he needed to clean himself from what was to come. Black liquid poured out of his skin with a very disgusting smell that would have made any mortal human vomit at the first notice. More and more black liquids seemed to be expelling from his body till there was a small puddle at his feet. About three minutes later it finally stopped. The smell in the bathroom could only be described with one word.

Inhuman!

It wasn't something a human's sense of smell could tolerate as their nose would definitely bleed profusely. That being said Blue wasn't any average human so he could remain unfettered by turning off his sense of smell which he could do so effortlessly with all of his five senses after a week of practice when he arrived.

He glanced at the black liquid puddle at his feet while shaking his head in dismay. He started cleaning himself up as he was certain that getting rid of the smell and the puddle would take some time.

"In the end I had to choose 'their' technique to purify this body thoroughly. By tomorrow morning my body and soul should be in perfect harmony."

He said while scrubbing himself diligently. Then he remembered another point which made him smile bitterly,

"This technique should have been used after aether vein had awakened or when 'they' were about to start on that path. Sigh… without any aether in the body it will still gather impurity regardless. Well, at least I could prevent other players from suspecting something after awakening. Having a bit of impurity on the body would still pull the wool over their ignorant eyes anyway."

He didn't worry about any player suspecting him because he had figured out their power and knowledge depths after comparing this world with other information he had about players from his past life.

In short, he had the confidence to fool them.
