Chapter 11: The Adoption Process Part 2

Chapter 11: The Adoption Process Part 2

Karla just celebrated her 18th birthday five days ago. She was now looking forward to the awakening ceremony. Both of her elder brother and sister were awakened. She also had to put in extra effort to follow in their footsteps.

Her brother however seemed keen to just cut off familial ties. He had been working abroad so one might have thought something untoward happened since he had been out of reach for about a year but his Life Lamp was well lit so him being out of contact truly meant he had started disregarding the family.

What an ingrate!

Speaking of this Life Lamp, it was quite a mysterious thing. It could detect whether the one who first lit it was still alive or not by staying lit or extinguished. It could even display whether that person was injured or suffering health complications by how well the fire of that lamp was burning.

When her brother graduated from academy just a year after enrolling he sent this Life Lamp through Guild Alliance's help and a letter stating how he was talented enough to have completed the academy course and safely graduated, his choice of working abroad and finally, not to worry about his well being.

The family was happy that he was such a prodigy but not even coming back to meet them once left a bitter feeling in their heart. Things were still good as he kept exchanging letters biannually, apparently the guild he joined was very far away from Guild Alliance's territory making electric communication devices ineffective, so they were only able to keep in contact through those letters. But soon even that stopped as the final letter hinted towards him trying to get a higher position within the guild thus he couldn't "waste his time" on writing letters so often.

After a year of silence their initial suspicion became more accurate thus now they had stopped mentioning him much. Especially the two sisters who were enraged by his behavior. They now treated him as if he didn't exist from the start.

Karla's big sister became awakened and left for the academy two years ago. Surprisingly whether it was her big brother or sister both of them would always change the topic when their life in academy was discussed. Even if they were asked about how the academy looked and where it was, they would stop those questions by saying they weren't allowed to reveal such details and hastily leave the video call as if fearing that they would blurt out something.

So she and her mother would also stop asking lest they get into any trouble because of their persistence. Well, as long as she became awakened then she would also unravel this mystery shortly after, so she wasn't much worried about it.

What she was truly worried about was the thing her mother discussed with her and big sister today. Her mother would actually adopt an orphan and fill her quota which was due in five years.

Both sisters tried to persuade her not to make such a hasty decision since she still had five years left. Maybe after her big sister graduated and returned she would be able to help her about this matter. Karla also supported her sister's suggestion and tried to convince her mother.

She was however adamant to not to get her sister into those muddy waters. Her husband being a player allowed her to be aware of some specific knowledge about player society. Those without a strong background would always have to pay a price if they wanted to get something done that wasn't part of established rules.

She was afraid that her daughter would be forced to do stuff in exchange for subverting the rule that would leave her with a lifetime of regret. She also revealed this concern to her daughters which finally made them accept the present solution instead of being optimistic about an uncertain future.

Karla however had a different thought. For the past few months her mother always seemed to be brooding about something, as if she was concerned about someone. Actually her decision for an adoption was also something both she and her sister had an inkling about.

They were also worried about the deadline and knowing their mother's personality all too well they could already guess what she would do in the future. The strange thing was that both of them had already communicated about it earlier and concluded that their mother's decision would be revealed after her big sister graduated from the academy or if Karla was able to become awakened and left for the academy.

This discussion left them thinking that her mother might have been too anxious these days.

After finding the owner of Blessed Womb physique, Blue followed her around and finally confirmed the location of her house within an hour. After corrupting a few neighbors he was able to gain intelligence about this target.

Her name was Laura. She was 43 years old. She was an herbalist and had a shop selling herbs from her garden in the market area. She was a widow whose husband had been an awakened player back in the capital a decade ago.

After her husband passed away she returned to Carnova which was apparently her hometown. She used to be an orphan with no relatives thus after buying this mansion she focused on raising her childrens while only keeping a cordial relationship with her new neighbors.

She had three children. One son and two daughters. Her eldest son and daughter both awakened. They left for the academy many years ago. Her son had already graduated and now worked abroad. Her youngest daughter will soon be 18 this year's summer. Her eldest son's age was 22, first daughter's age was 20.

"So two years gap each, is it a speciality of the Blessed Womb physique?"

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

Blue thought as he inwardly exclaimed how overpowered she was. The fact that two out of three children actually was able to awaken their aether vein while she was still an unawakened mortal human was beyond the scope of any miracle.

Being one of the top powerhouses back in Inner Area of Abyss, he had a very profound understanding about aether as well as the impact it had on other races of Endless Void.

If you consider the point of reproduction for the human race's awakened human branch, the couple being both awakened would naturally result in the child also being awakened after their adulthood. They would have a 100% certainty to be successful during the awakening ceremony.

On the other hand, the couple being unawakened would reduce that chance. Being successful in the awakening ceremony was a probability of 10% or less.

And if one of the couple was awakened then the kid's chance of success was about 50%. So the fact that Laura's two kids both hit that 50% back to back was very attention worthy.

Blue was now aware that she had Blessed Womb physique, which he had never heard about prior but that system put such great emphasis on her that she became a necessity for its evolution. So it was definitely an overpowered physique.

Going with that logic, Blue could confidently surmise that her youngest daughter would also be awakened. That would make all the three of her children be within that 50%. Three in a row? It had now surpassed the aether vein awakening probability of awakened humans.

Blue was actually very curious why such an overpowered physique's owner was not awakened or how she still remained in an obscure background for so long. If other players had noticed her peculiarity or even figured out her special physique then she would no doubt be captured and turned into a baby making machine.

Hateful term indeed but that would have been her reality for being a weakling.

Blue now had a strong sense of urgency to fulfill the second requirement as quickly as possible. If other players actually ended up noticing her then he could say goodbye to ever activating the system. Not to mention, because of the subspace that appeared years ago many players had arrived from the capital and now took residence within the city.

More he kept delaying it, the more variables would appear.

So after getting all the vital information about Laura he swiftly made his way back to the orphanage. He then began to ponder how to fulfill the second requirement with the information he had gathered.

"That 'system' intentionally put the "without using any bloodline ability" part on the description and on top of that "gain her acknowledgment" part is very ambiguous. It is already difficult enough to get anything done without the bloodline abilities but now this vague objective makes it insane to get the job done. Sigh…"

He heaved a tired sigh at the difficulties that lay ahead. He checked his Memory Palace to review all that he knew about unawakened in this world. Maybe he could find a clue for the solution. As he was checking all the information gathered for more than five years he noticed a certain part he previously overlooked.

"Eh? The law to send four childrens… wait I can use this. She had three children and after becoming a widow she didn't get into any relationship or that her neighbors were aware of. Five years remaining till the time limit. However her two childrens are awakened so maybe she could get away with it? No, I can't give up on this chance."

Blue stood up from his bed and swiftly left his private room as he made his way downstairs. He had formed a strategy. A perfect strategy where he would not have to use his bloodline abilities and still get her acknowledgment.

How to get it done? In order to understand that one would have to figure out the meaning of "gaining acknowledgment". This term could be used in many situations such as being acknowledged as a good person or being acknowledged as a scum. Of course, these were just general conjectures. Blue also had to consider whether the system would even approve of such acknowledgment.

The Blessed Womb physique was a crucial necessity for its evolution. Why would being acknowledged lead to its evolution? He had zero idea about it but his present situation wouldn't allow for a wait and see approach. Especially now that he had found the target and understood the overpoweredness of her physique. On top of that, he was just a mortal human so how could he leave behind such an opportunity for others.

It is a pity that he couldn't use his bloodline abilities on her as the first thought he had after understanding her physique was to swiftly corrupt her and make full use of her speciality. However now he had to take the next best option.

To keep her near him and prevent anyone from figuring out about her physique.

So after learning about that "law of sending four children" he had found the breaking point for this predicament. It was very simple since it literally corresponds with his original identity in this world. He just had to get her to adopt him, an orphan, to fulfill her quota as soon as possible. With this move he could be near her as her family and be able to gain her acknowledgment as a member of her family.

A brilliant stroke!

However he couldn't use any bloodline ability during crucial parts such as "making her want to adopt an orphan" or "selecting him as her family" and other such nuances. So even though he had found the perfect strategy, actually carrying it out would be difficult…. if he didn't have his subspace that is!

Soon, Blue stood in that same room of the nearest hospital from the barricaded city square. It was in this place he got that cube and thus started his grind to activate the system. He didn't bother trying to access his subspace ever since because the city square and its surrounding were always teeming with players all over the place. He didn't want to get any unnecessary attention on him and not to mention he was busy with the energy siphoning part.

Now that over five years had passed with no incident over this "Dimensional Gate" the players had become complacent and there were many large holes in their security arrangements.

Blue surmised that the aether that flew out of the cracks were dense enough for them to treat it as a treasure to further increase their strength if not for their certainty of it being a "Dimensional Gate". They must have feared that it was luring them to use it for increasing their strength and then at a crucial moment those invaders' plot would succeed and they would be forced into a desperate situation. Thus everybody or most of them dared not to gamble with their life.

If they truly treated it as a treasure then the security details wouldn't be in such a disarray.

Regardless, whether they treated it as a treasure or not Blue didn't care since they couldn't enter inside to take his stuff anyway. If some of them sneakily benefited from the residual aether then let them be. From Blue's perspective it was akin to begging for a morsel of food while he had the entire food industry in his pocket.

Today he came here to take a special item from the subspace that will complete the perfect strategy.
