"So...Jamie Frazier....is something..." Nyx said as she was enraptured by Brittanie's favorite Television series called "Outlander."
Brittanie wore a smug smile and nodded as she watched the younger woman actually enjoy herself.
Through the late morning and early afternoon they watched episode after episode not really talking only when Nyx asked questions about the culture of the show and different things they would do or say.
Brittanie spoke up after one episode.
"Do you like Ky?" She asked.
Nyx paused and looked over. "Yes of course. And I'm not just saying that because you're his mother. He is competent, professional, his path is beyond useful and from a business standpoint, he is reliable which in my opinon is priceless." Nyx said turning back to the show.
"No. I mean emotionally. Do you have feelings for him?" Brittanie asked.
Nyx's brows furrowed as she thought. In her life, she had been kept well separate from any suitors. Her dad was insanely overprotective and had declared that he would determine her husband or husbands based on his own criteria. She found the thought of having more than one husband completely repulsive, but what do you say to someone like her father?
She then thought about Kyrain in a romatic light and she couldn't help but smile. She never really examined how he made her feel up until now, but his presence gave her a sense of security that she absolutely could never admit where her family could hear. Before the program she was thoroughly educated in matters of state, war, intrigue, etiquette, and so much more. She understood children and the requirement for her to have an heir, but that was something she wanted to push so far out.
She circled back to Brittanie's question. "Did she have feelings for Kyrain?" The truthful answer was that she didn't really know. She had never had feelings for anyone before. She did like the way she felt when he was near, she enjoyed looking at him, she liked his smile and laugh. He was caring and loyal to her. He didn't tell people things she told him as far as she knew.
All of these thoughts passed through her Tier 7 mind in a moment and she spoke.
"I don't honestly know. I feel comfortable around him. I smile when I think about him. I've never been in a romantic relationship before. I've read books about it, but never actually felt anything those books describe. This show, I understand that concept and..." She broke off blushing.
"I'm not going to tell anyone or embarrass you. Be open." Brittanie encouraged affecting an air of nonchalance.
"Well, I want what Jamie and Claire have. It's explosive, it's passionate, it's something that I would think is real. Unfortunately, my dad would never allow it. He has chosen all of my other siblings wives and husbands and it's even more strict with me." She explained as her face was hot and her palms began to sweat.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
Brittanie turned and looked.
"You don't have an accent so I assumed you were from the United States. Where are you from that your dad has that much control over you as an adult?" She asked.
Nyx frowned.
"I want to tell you, but it wouldn't be safe for anyone involved if any word got anywhere. Can I please not say?" She asked fully trusting Brittanie.
"You're on the run." Brittanie replied.
"Yes. So far my father and his people have no clue where I am and it is next to impossible for them to track me down unless I do something really stupid." Nyx said as she nervously braided and unbraided a lock of her silver hair.
Brittanie nodded.
"I like you Nyx. You're not like a lot of the women in this world who I have seen fawn over Ky because of his abilities, all of those I have seen try to date my son, somehow always seem to have the worst luck...somehow." She said as she activated one of her glowing threads she used like a tendril and made it act like it was hooking someone's ankle.
"They are always so clumsy around him for some reason." She finished with an evil self satisfied smile.
Nyx giggled then returned to a thoughtful look.
"If I did have feelings for Ky, how would I know?" She asked and looked over.
"Well, I can only tell you about how Sorin and I were. He was strange actually. Wouldn't leave me alone. Awkward, random, loved to laugh, he always wanted me around and wanted to see me. I caught him starring at me all the time, though he thought he was being slick about it. I had emotional and mental injuries from my childhood and past relationships that he didn't mind, he loved me through them and actively worked to erase the damage. We laughed, he made me feel safe. Before this system, I always knew when he was around, he would lay waste to the whole world rather than allow something to hurt me or Ky." Brittanie said as her eyes started to go red with unshed tears.
Nyx was quiet and just listened.
"You begin to notice the little things. Their smell, their laugh, the little things they do that annoy you when they are here, you miss when they are gone."
Nyx interrupted at this point.
"Did Sorin actually help you fix all the damage?" She asked.
Brittanie smiled, wipping away the few tears. "Yes. The only thing that remains are the echoes that he and I would call scars. Sorin is my best friend and I know that one day he will eventually make his way back to us." She answered.
Nyx thought a few more moments.
"Kyrain does make me feel something like that. Provided it's not to the depth you and Sorin are. Is it ok for me to feel that way? I know some mothers get extremely protective of their children and I don't want to ruin the relationship I have found with you or with Kyrain. I don't even know if he even feels this way about me." Nyx said.
Brittanie laughed, rolled her eyes, then gave Nyx a flat look.
"He does. He is just like his dad when it comes to hiding his emotions. He was physically sick, I was told when you were being worked on. If you actually feel genuinely for Kyrain and don't want to use or harm him, I don't mind you Nyx. The only thing that bothers me is your background." She said.
Nyx nodded and continued to braid her hair nervously.
"I understand, if that side of my life ever was about to hurt anyone here, I'd definitely let you know." She replied then let her hair drop.
Brittanie smiled huge at Nyx. "That all i needed to hear." She said as she set her phone down.
"He is on his way." Brittanie followed up saying as Nyx snapped her head up.
"For what?!" She squeaked.
