Chapter 56. Stroke of Genius

Chapter 56. Stroke of Genius

As Lex Luthor watched through the reinforced glass, the room's lighting gradually revealed the figure lying on the bed. The woman's features began to emerge as she stirred awake.

Her raven-black hair cascaded around her shoulders, and her armor-like outfit glistened even in the subdued lighting. It was unmistakable; this was no ordinary individual.

Her azure eyes slowly opened, and the group standing beside her felt shivers run down their spine. Even in her groggy state, there was an intensity to her gaze that sent a clear message – she was not to be underestimated. She began to flex her powerful muscles, testing her restraints.

As the woman regained her senses, she realized her predicament. Her eyes darted around the room, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings.

The mechanical restraints that held her down became apparent, and her expression hardened with determination. She tugged at the restraints with incredible strength, her muscles straining against the unyielding metal.

The room quaked as Wonder Woman exerted herself, her power surging through her veins. With a final, mighty heave, she broke free from the restraints, sending shards of metal scattering across the room.

None of the scientists tried to stop her, or keep her restrained. They all scattered away into the corners, scared.

Lex's eyes widened in amazement at the display of her raw strength.

"Yes, yes..." he proclaimed as he observed, ready to activate the EMP.

Wonder Woman leaped to her feet, her movements wobbly, however. She had been subjected to a huge dosage of sleeping medication, and a constant channeling of anti-magic.

She could feel it's effects in her body, but her power was divine - a gift from the gods, and she didn't feel a tad weaker.

She felt the fury grow inside of her as she recalled the moment that led to her unprecedented capture. She knew someone was watching, and her fury was becoming even more palpable.

The Amazonian princess raised her gauntleted fists, her eyes flashing with anger. In an instant, she struck the glass with a thunderous blow. The reinforced material cracked, and then shattered under the might of her blows, sending shards of glass flying.

Lex waited as Wonder Woman stepped through the shattered glass, her presence filling the control room. He then pressed a green button on the damaged interface and ducked as fast as he could.

The EMP device powered up, a low hum filling the air. Wonder Woman was taken aback by Lex's behaviour, but that didn't matter. Lex had done something that even her considered unforgivable, and she had brought the wrath of the Amazons with her.

Furiously she pressed on to where Lex had ducked. But her anger had consumed her that she didn't realize the imminent danger.

Just as she was about to reach for Lex, the EMP device discharged its energy in a blinding burst.

The energy beam struck Wonder Woman, enveloping her in a shimmering field. Her movements slowed, and she gasped in surprise.

Lex stood up, and made some distance between him and Diana, ready to observe the full power of the EMP. The energy was clean, and it operated quickly, without a fuss.

The shield around Wonder Woman began to constrict around her body, growing smaller and smaller. Her anger began to dissipate as as her powers were suppressed. Her strength waned, and she stumbled, falling to her knees.

Determined, she stood up and observed her armor, stretching out her hands before her. She could still feel it. Her powers had remained intact, and she didn't feel any weaker. But she fell less angry. Although, she wanted Lex to pay what he had done.

She leapt towards where he stood, unleashing a battle cry, ready to land a blow on his face. Lex took a step back, his face and body gesturing his surprise. Had the EMP not worked?

But Wonder Woman's leap was not her usual power leap. She was slower and jumped less higher. She didn't however concern herself with this, believing that she was tired.

She managed to reach Lex, but not as close as she had hoped, and her fist only grazed him. Lex wore his grin back on. He had seen her in battle, and this wasn't standard Wonder Woman.

The science that had gone into creating the EMP was factual, an he had no doubt about it working. All he needed to know was how severe the side effects were.

Wonder Woman regained her composure and leapt in for another attack. She made sure to measure her strength as she usually did, because her main goal was to catch Lex, and not kill him. That was not the case a few minutes ago.

She threw a well planned kick towards Lex, aiming for his stomach. Lex was quick to notice this move, but not quick enough to dodge it. The kick landed heavily on his stomach, causing him some pain.

He bent his body in reflex as Wonder Woman switched her legs to throw another kick. Something was wrong. That kick was supposed to send Lex flying backwards, even though not far back. Her strength was still intact, but it was not reflecting in her actions.

"Hahaha..." Lex started as Wonder Woman launched her next attack."It worked!"

Lex straightened his spine and leaned backwards, effectively dodging Wonder Woman's power kick. "You are slower. You are weaker."

"I can take you without the need of any gears." Lex boasted, marveling at his achievement. He had noticed the Wonder Woman had become less of a wonder woman. She was just normal. The EMP had effectively suppressed her abilities.

Wonder Woman took a step back, after a failed attempt at hitting Lex. She stood to think. She was lagging a little bit more than usual, even though she felt okay. That beam of light that had hit her must have done something to her.

Nevertheless, she didn't fully cling to her divine powers. She had trained in the Themyscira ever since she was a child, and she was still a strong Amazonian Warrior.

Her mind flashed back to the little girl in the forest, and her explosive rage guided her through a series of maneuvers that sent Lex into various positions that would make good for an illustrated photography.

Lex grabbed his right cheek as Wonder Woman slowed down to plan her next moves. He spit blood from his mouth, and eyed her curiously. She was his project, and everything was going on so well. The tall woman was no longer as ferocious as she was once before.

It went without saying that Lex would be the one winning this fight. Soon, the EMP would be refined and restructured to fit into guns and other shooting mechanisms, and all metahumans would cease to exist.

Princess Diana was about to launch on a follow-up attack when something hit her from the back, and she fell down, unconscious. Lex's security team had arrived, and Mirage was the one who had performed a sneak attack on Wonder Woman.

Lex Luthor watched with a triumphant grin as the EMP device seemed to be working as intended. He had neutralized Wonder Woman's powers, and she was now vulnerable. But his satisfaction was short-lived.

The EMP device began to malfunction. Sparks flew from its machinery, and the energy field surrounding Wonder Woman fluctuated wildly.

The room trembled as the malfunction escalated, and the EMP's energy field began to destabilize. It crackled and flickered, casting an eerie light across the room.

Unsure of what would happen, Lex frantically pressed the red button on the half-damaged interface. It didn't seem to stop whatever was about to happen.

He then proceeded to smash all the buttons, even using objects such as chairs to break the interface.

The impact caused a catastrophic chain reaction, and the device exploded in a dazzling burst of energy. The shockwave sent Lex and the scientists sprawling to the floor.

The EMP device, a projectile with a circular protrusion on its pointy end, jerked sideways, and then upwards, facing the feeling.

Energy seemed to be moving through magic and anti-magic relics, and it all converged in the EMP, where it was amalgamated and amplified, shooting a powerful beam towards the sky.

Lex stopped for a moment, observing the EMP in action. An idea was beginning to form in his mind in this chaotic mind.

"Brilliant!" He said to himself. "That's an even better approach."

Still, he needed to shut down the EMP before it ruined, or drained all the artifacts.

The EMP vibrated and shook immensely as the beam projected upwards, channeling all the amplified energy to the sky. The more it did this, the more powerful the beam seemed to get, as the light intensified.

Finally, the EMP device gave in to the power of the beam, rattling, before it exploded into pieces. The red lights that had lit in the room, and the alarms, all got destroyed in the process. The setup slowly shut down, as silence finally fell into the room.

"Brilliant!" Lex said, fascinated by what he had just seen. To him, this was not a life threatening situation or anything. It was a moment of inspiration that gave him a great way to simplify his task.

"Find Felix, and the crystal." Alex ordered Mirage as he recomposed into his authoritative posture. "We need all the power we can get for what's coming next. Bring the sorcerer and the crystal to me, in Metropolis."
