Chapter 14 : Levelling Up the Focus Skill, Deciding On A New Course

Everything went the same way when Reno used the skill the first time.

Not only did Reno see situations where the parry skills could be used, along with how it could be used effectively even with the long cooldown time and ways to deal with the parry skill when others used it.

Reno regained control over his body and had sweat oozing all over him. Dropping onto the ground, Reno checked his combat evaluation sheet to see how much the parry skill had grown and what the next level of the focus skill had to offer.

Focus [II] (0 hrs/ 10 hrs)

{Able to maintain full concentration on any task for 2 hours, during the skill duration, comprehension is increased}

[Cooldown time: 22 hours] (Rarity: N/A)

Parry [III] (267/1000) ( A very basic sword skill)

{A basic move that can be used with most weapons. Able to redirect the direction of an attack very slightly while also negating 20%{15%} of the damage received. {Calculated based on the user’s defense/vitality and the skill’s proficiency level}} (Rarity: F [Common]) [Cooldown time: 20 seconds]

Reno was ecstatic and clutched his sword tightly like before he had entered the defense training room.

“The feeling of growing even just a bit stronger is an intoxicating one. Not only did the duration of focus increase but the cooldown time was also shortened”

“The only thing is that my physical stats are limiting some of my skills. I’d be able to negate 20% of damage received if either my defense or vitality were stronger but instead I can only negate 15%”

“I should put apart some time tomorrow to go to the gym and get a trainer so I can increase my stats as soon as I can”

After deciding on his plans, he got up off the ground and was about to leave.

Unexpectedly, as the defense training room wasn’t turned off one more steel ball shot at Reno.

Reno saw this and with a calm mind readied his blade.

[Parry]

When Reno’s sword and the steel ball touched, there was a loud clang sound before the ball shot into the wall and fell onto the ground.

Reno then calmly placed his blade back into his sheath before turning off the defense training room from his watch and then going back into the main training room.

Reno felt tired from both sparring and then using focus to train his parry skill for an hour straight.

He felt he still had a bit in him though so he started lightly jogging on a treadmill in the training room.

“I probably shouldn’t push myself too hard like Cassia said but thinking about Lena and the burly guy, the sparring match, and the dumb promise Grania had made to Buggi, Reno felt his motivation rise”

While jogging, Reno was also thinking about which class he would pick to fill his vacant slot.

‘I’m already a swordsman so it would be meaningless to go to another weapon class unless I want to fully change’

Another defining factor of normal school credit pathway students and merit pathway students would be that merit pathway students had fewer course slots than the former.

Most of them picked and chose what they liked when they liked it and they easily could with their 10-course slots.

As seen on Reno’s combat evaluation sheet, he could only choose up to 4 courses maximum.

The main reason for this is that merit system students would spend most of their time fulfilling academy missions and would have to miss out on a large number of classes either way.

The only reason that Reno hadn’t gone to try accepting any missions would be that missions only opened after the merit students combat test so Reno still had time to grow before then.

‘I also don’t have a vital core meaning lots of choices are already out of the window.’

Reno then started shifting through the memories of the original Reno in an attempt to find a good course that would be useful even when he left the academy.

It didn’t take long before he found a suitable candidate.

“The blacksmithing course! Not only is energy not required because the ovens used are special but it was also not popular with people from powerful families as most wouldn’t dare to work in dirt and grime.”

Reno then stopped the treadmill and got off, more sweaty than before.

He then smiled wryly as the memory he had gotten the information from was a pretty wacky one.

The original Reno had gone to a course fair and was being a showoff about being a swordsman and whatnot. He had gone with Grania but she was off trying smores from the food club.

Reno then encountered a set of twins and got caught in some troublesome situations, to make it up to Reno, one of the twins who was in the blacksmithing course bragged about how good of a blacksmith he was and how if Reno did anything to him he’d suffer, yadda yadda, some villain spiel and what not.

This forced the original Reno to end up leaving pissed by not being able to do anything to the two of them.

‘Honestly, even if there is no holier than thou influential family student garbage going in the blacksmithing course as most don’t wanna touch blacksmithing, you still have some assholes in there’

Reno then wiped off the sweat on his body with a towel and then left his dorm’s training room.
