Chapter 6: Rune magic, best magic?

(Although I’ve decided to steal all the relics…i still need a plan. My body right now is weak…and I have neither tools nor connections..guess I’ll stay low and gather information first..)

Thinking this, Yuri completely ignored Mako’s lesson about the gods history. Eventually deciding to interrupt her.

“So….this orb is one of the most important objects in this world..?”

Mako flinched as she accidentally bit her tongue due to being interrupted.

“Owch…yesh thatsh cowwect”

She cast a low level healing spell on herself while she lisped.

“The only things more valuable would be…a gods body part?” She tilted her head slightly “Since the flesh of gods grant immortality when eaten, but well you don’t find the body parts of the most powerful creatures in existence lying about..but who wouldn’t want a part of their chosen god~”

Yuri ignored Makos slightly creepy smile while thinking through what she learned.

“Hm..okay..so is it really that wise to only have it in a big unprotected room that is guarded by two people..?”

Yuri asked while attempting to not so stealthily guide the conversation to talks of security measures.

“Not really” Shrugging dismissively, Mako tried to continue her talk about the history of all the gods and every single god damned rumour about them. Which Yuri hurriedly stopped by throwing a few more questions her way.

“Well..wouldn’t it be better to hide it then, or something, it seems like it would have gotten stolen a long time ago like this..?” A confused looking Yuri inquired.

“Well, you see, the relics are chosen by the gods themselves. So naturally if someone steals them, they will be struck by the fury of the god. So far no one has ever tried to steal one before”

Answering as if talking to a child who asked a silly question, Mako smiled kindly at Yuri.

“Alright….but wouldn’t the followers of other gods find it profitable to steal them..? I mean if you can’t decide the next bishop, then the whole church is left without a leader, right..?”

Still thinking that it was peculiar that no one had already stolen this orb, even with when considering the supposed wrath of the gods, She tilted her head at Mako.

“Hmm? Kind of? The gods can’t use their real bodies in our realm, as that would cause a ton of problems. Which is why they use magic. Hmm…but it’s not like..normal magic, its ancient magic, that’s mostly been forgotten by the world. The only remnants of it today, is rune magic. Since runes can be written on almost anything there have been many rocks and stone tablet that contained the runic language”

A rough plan began to outline itself in Yuri’s mind as Mako answered her question.

“That’s really interesting, say, since my world didn’t have magic, could I learn it from you? Something like that rune magic seems fascinating. I mean since I was abandoned here by your god with nothing at all, I think it would count like cleaning up after your gods mistakes, no?”

Attempting to flutter her eyes in the manner she had seen young girls do it when they wanted something from their parents, she was sure it only looked like she was having a seizure.

“I guess I can do that if you want? We can start right now by checking your affinities and the like, so let’s go to the training room”

Mako led Yuri out of the giant room and into another dark corridor.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

Around half an hour later, according to Yuri’s growling stomach, they finally arrived at the training room.

“Ugh…how bug is this place..so impractical..if this was…. my old body….. I’d be fine with…. walking all day..”

Speaking in between breaths, Yuri slayed down on the floor tiredly.

“You’re so weak…so cuuuute~”

Mako attempted to hug Yuri, who nimbly rolled away while still laying on the floor.

“Well anyway, this is the training room, where most nuns practice their magic, since nuns only train healing magic, its a bit basic, but should be fine for a beginner like you”

Looking around the room, she quickly found what she was looking for and grabbed it “Found it!” Walking back towards Yuri, Mako held out a green scratched up and dented crystal orb, as if expecting Yuri to do something with it.

“Uhhh..what is that..?”

Observing the strange orb from various angles, Yuri kept looking at it with confusion.

“Oh. Right. Never seen magic before today. Forgot. So you don’t know what this is” She clutched the orb with both hands.

“This is a magic absorption orb, it’s used as protection against basic magical attacks, since it can suck in mana, but it’s mostly used for checking peoples mana capacity”

A faint blue aura crawled along Makos hands and into the orb, which began to shine brightly, displaying a faint number with three digits.

“Okay, now it’s your turn~”

Throwing the orb over to Yuri who almost dropped, she looked at her expectantly.

“So..how do I do this…?”

“Hm? What do you mean? Just pour your mana into it”

Answering as if it were obvious, she looked at Yuri as if she was slow.

“Like I said, how the hell am I…” Yuri sighed slightly.

“Even young children know how to do that…but since you’re from a world without magic..i guess it’s inevitable. Your blood should work, since it transfers mana around your body so a few drops will do just fine”

Pointing towards the knife in Yuri’s pocket, she waited for Yuri.

Drawing out the knife, Yuri made a tiny cut on her small white finger, squeezing out a few drops of glimmering crimson blood. Splattering across the scratched surface of the orb.

The orb began to shine slightly as it did with Mako. And stopped abruptly, displaying a number hidden behind the drops of blood that rested on the surface.

“Hmm.. let’s see here..”

Wiping away the blood with her sleeve, Mako looked at the number inside the orb. Instead of where several digits were supposed to be. There was only one.

Swirling around inside the green orbs inside….was the number 1.

“…….”

“……..”

“That’s bad isn’t it.”

Yuri finally asked after a few minutes of silence.

“Well…you can give up on magic…you couldn’t even make a pebble levitate with that amount…but a 1 huh…i don’t think anyone has ever had a mana capacity that low..that’s incredibly impressive in it’s own way..”

Giving Yuri a pitying look, Mako patted her head gently.

“….DAAAMMMNNN ITTTTT!”

Suddenly screaming out Yuri looked up.

“The only cool thing about this damn would and I don’t have access to it! SCREW YOU, YOU DAMN BOOGER LOOKING BALL!”

Teary eyed and upset, Yuri lifted up the knife she was still holding, an item supposedly used by a god in the past. And swung it down onto the orb.

The knife somehow made a deep scratch on the surface of the orb, which immediately began to glow. The glowing continued to intensify until they couldn’t keep their eyes open.

Slowly the glowing subsided, and they were finally able to open their eyes again.

Looking at the orb, they noticed that it was cracked in half, a small number floating on one half of the orb.

“An…..eight?”

“No…that’s not an eight…it’s on it’s side…that’s—infinity!”

Realising what this meant, Mako’s eyes went wide as she looked over at the knife casually resting in Yuris small hands.

“You might still be able to use magic after all…magic more powerful than you could ever have hoped for.”

“Huh? I thought my magic was a 1…???”

Looking over at Mako, Yuri was still somewhat shocked by what just happened.

“That’s still true, the knife you’re holding in your hand however, seems to have a seemingly unlimited capacity of mana, or at least high enough to crack the orb. I don’t know if it’s due to cutting up the legendary godly fruit during the last supper I told you about, or what. But this at least means you can use rune magic!”

“Woaaaahhh, really!?!”

Exclaiming happily, Yuri looked at the small knife in astonishment “So you weren’t an ordinary fruit knife after all!”

“I said that it wasn’t ordinary before though, didn’t I…”

Sighing slightly, Mako prepared herself to demonstrate Runic magic to Yuri.
