Chapter 20: Flight and Fight

Chapter 20: Flight and Fight

Awoken by her inner clock, Yuri felt deathly tired after her nightly escapades. She made her way to the rebellion hideout, making sure to casually steal a few tomes on rune magic from the library nearby.

She suddenly tripped while reading one of the tomes, making her fly forward in a comical manner.

Painfully getting up, she found the object she had tripped over was in fact the body of Galin, that laid on the ground like a rag.

Worry filled her heart, but was quickly replaced with irritation as she noticed the dwarfish man drooling and muttering to herself.

She gave the passed out man a quick kick, making him jump up in pain and confusion.

“AAH! What, where am I, who did that!”

“Sleeping on the job are we..pft..”

Yuri smirked slightly.

Galin finally notice Yuri standing next to him and slowly calmed down.

“Well, what’s your excuse for falling asleep in the middle of your job?”

“Well..it was cold, and I was sleepy, so I drank some mead that I keep on me. It was kind of boring, so I drank some more. Then other guards joined in, and we drank a bit more. That’s all I can remember..” He deduced he more than slightly drunk at the time.

“Ohoho~drinking on the job, I wonder if this kind of stuff should be reported?”

Her smile widened.

“Listen girl, you owe me, I let you in here, so don’t gimme trouble!”

Galin snapped back while sweating slightly, which Yuri didn’t miss.

“Oh~you seem nervous. I was only joking but seems I hit the jackpot. Reckon you can’t afford being caught drinking again or you get fired, correct?”

Her guess hit right on the mark, as Galin began to sweat even more.

“Now listen here, I only have some copper coins left..the rest I need to pay my rent at the inn.. I can’t spare any money if that’s what you want..”

He answered in a reluctant manner, marking his loss in the battle of wills between him and Yuri.

“Oh I don’t want anything like that, what I want is something along the lines of the guards shifts, of course I’m willing to pay you as well~” Her smile turned devious.

“…what would a young lady like yourself want with something like that..?” The dwarf-like man asked suspiciously.

“That doesn’t matter now does it. You get paid and I don’t tell anyone about your nightly fun during work hours. You don’t even seem to care about your job so what does it matter?”

She took out a few gold coins she had nicked from a passer-by at some point.

“Well, you’re not wrong..i only do it cause I have to..heck I could use the extra money..that will really help this month…Fine. But don’t tell anyone about my drinks.”

Galin quickly gave in to the temptation of immediate gain from the gold coins clanking in Yuri’s small fists.

“Excellent” She handed over the coins and shook his hand.

Picking up a few more stones, Yuri dropped by the local blacksmith. Where she bought a pair of small gauntlets, to use for when she had nothing to draw runes on except her body. The image of her almost getting squashed from falling off a building made her shudder. She put on the gauntlets and drew a rune for soft landing on them, before restocking her supply of spell stones.

Yuri entered the hideout and was respectfully greeted by the healers.

“Miss Yuri, the captain is expecting you in his quarters.” One of the healers said.

Yuri walked in the captains room while greeting him cheerfully with a wave.

“Yes..hello..” The captain greeted quietly.

“I have a job for you.”

“Great, if I do it, I will be considered an official member right?”

She asked hopefully.

“Yes..if you are able to complete this you will be an official member, not just any member however. If you complete this, you will be considered top brass. If you are able to complete it that is.”

He took out some papers from beneath his desk.

“You should know I can do it or not, you saw me in action”

“Yes, you were able to take down my soldiers, and I see you are powerful, but this will be more difficult than just a few half drunk idiots.”

He handed over the papers.

On the papers were a few drawings of several people and a brief description.

“You want me to…kill them or something..?”

“Correct, your job is to take them out in the next few days. They are various nobles and soldiers that are big supporters of the opposition. Disposing of them would greatly help our cause. Do this and you will be greatly rewarded..within reason.”

The captain explained while taking out a few items from his desk.

“So I can choose my reward? There is one thing I want to do in this city.. I want to see the relic of the god. If that’s possible?” She asked carefully.

“The relic? Afraid I can’t..even if it’s just for a quick visit..the bank is too important to the enemy so it’s guarded against any ones entry, even mine. Sadly I can’t allow the visit.”

He made a slightly apologetic face.

“I see..well we can talk about that when I finish the mission I guess..”

Yuri felt disheartened, seems it wasn’t going to be that easy.

“You aren’t going empty handed of course. I have some letters to be used as easy access to the nobles homes. Falsified letters of recommendation. You can enter their homes that way if you want to.”

He handed Yuri a few official looking letters.

“I see..well then, I’m off, wish me luck!”

She rushed out quickly, with the familiar gust of wind hitting the captain in the face.

“Hmmm…let’s see here..”

Yuri sat in the rebels hideout and the tomes she stole earlier. This was a better place as she needed to study her spells and test them. The hideout has plenty of living targets after all.

Yuri drew some runes on her new gauntlets, which were made of steel and mithril. Although they were small they had cost Yuri most of her coins. But it was a good purchase.

“Hmm..finished..should work probably..”

Yuri mumbled as she finished working on her gauntlets.

The gauntlets now held six spells on each gauntlet. The spells were drawn on the forearm parts of the gauntlets. The spells located on the forearms were all connected through a series of small and barely visible runes that looked like wires and connected to a big magic rune circle located on the palm of the gauntlet.

Yuri put the gauntlets back on and activated one of the spells on the her gauntlet. A familiar lightning spell, instead of lightning shooting out from the spot the spell was drawn on, it instead shot out the big rune circle on her palm.

“It works..I’m awesome for thinking of this..”

She giggled and admired the writhing mass of electricity in her palm.

What Yuri had done was fairly simple. She connected the spells on the forearms with a transmitting circle which is generally used for increasing the range of other spells.

So all the spells on her forearms can be used on her palms without having to redraw them on her palm over and over again.

She could use up to twelve spells in total with her two gauntlets without having to worry about drawing them. Something necessary if she was going to fight in the future, as timing was everything.

“Okay let’s test this new spell…”

She activated a spell she recently learned and pointed her palm forward.

A giant gust of wind blew out of Yuri’s palm and made her fly into the wall behind her.

A few healers rushed over and quickly healed her. A few minutes later she was back on her feet, although her head was still spinning.

“I think I made the spell too powerful..i flew at least several meters..”

She muttered. “Wait..flew..?”

She quickly redrew the spell on both her gauntlets and activated them. Except this time, she pointed her palms behind her.

Two giant gusts of wind made Yuri fly forwards at an incredible speed. She was about to get splattered against the wall in front of her. She was prepared however, and activated the soft falling spell she prepared earlier, which slowed her flight and made her slowly sink down on the floor.

“This is awesome…just like that superhero with the metal suit..or that mafia boss kid with the flames!”

She excitedly blurted out references that no one in this world except her would understand.

“This was supposed to be a spell for making a soft breeze that cools you in the summer..but I seem to be able to power it up with my special runes..this will be fun~ “

She admired her new black gauntlets that had runes drawn on them. A few of the runes gave off a soft red glow and slowly disappeared.
