Chapter 21: Falling Stars

Chapter 21: Falling Stars

Walking out the rebels hideout while feeling quite satisfied with her new spell gauntlets, Yuri wondered if she could try drawing runes on her shoes.

It was quite difficult however as they were made of cloth, and activating runes on your feet is no easy feat. Wearing metal boots is also undesirable. Running was her most valued skill, and has served her well so far.

“Hm..am I really going to kill these people..I dislike dirtying my hands unless I have to..”

Placing her hand on her chest pocket where she kept the letters from the captain, Yuri sighed.

“Well, let’s at least try to finish one off, and see how it goes.”

Yuri took a laid back attitude towards her whole situation.

She took one of the letters out and opened it. Inside was a copy of the persons details. The person in question was an old man who was almost a hundred years old. His portrait looked more like a potato than a human.

Inside was also a letter of introduction into the old man’s household.

“Well..I wont be using this letter of introduction.”

She quickly tore the paper and threw it away.

“Would probably end up with me in a maids outfit or something silly like that..judging by my luck..”

She muttered while remembering the sadistic queen back in Urnan, s small shiver travelling up her spine.

“How hard can it really be to get inside anyway~”

“This is going to be harder than I thought…”

Standing in front of a large building that seemed similar to a mansion. She muttered softly.

“This looks more like a fortress than a mansion, damnit!”

Yuri swore at the letter which contained the information.

The building that was described as a mansion, stood fairly fairly low compared to the other buildings around it. It was however, surrounded by several giant watchtowers that contained archers and presumably magicians there, serving as guards.

The building itself was made up of mostly the same material as the bank, which meant it was going to be hard to break in by force. Both the outside and inside was presumably riddled with guards.

“What kind of security is this!?” Frustrated she stomped her foot. “Not even that damn queen had this much security!”

Her yelling made several people around her to turn and look at her.

“But this is really strange..” She quickly read through the targets file again. She looked through the letter more properly.

The person in question was from a long standing noble family that has been one of the leading families in this city for thousands of years. You could even say they were the very symbol of the traditional ways that the rebels were trying to fight against.

“This explains the security..but that captain..what the hell does he expect me to do..i’m just a new recruit..this is impossible..”

She muttered quietly in order to not arouse any more suspicion. She suddenly remembered the letter she had torn and thrown away.

“….Damn…” She sighed “Well I guess I have to go back and ask the captain for a new one…LIKE HELL I AM!”

Yuri retorted herself, making the passer bys avoid the strange peculiar girl that was talking to herself.

“I’m not going to go back and ask for another one. That’s too embarrassing. No I will just finish the job without a letter of introduction..and prove I don’t need silly things like that. Yes, a perfect plan!”

She laughed while making up her mind.

“The question is..how the hell will I get in..”

She puzzled over her next course of action.

Yuri stood at the top of the giant green tower that responsible for teleporting letters. She had climbed up the tower with the help of a few air spells that boosted her up.

She had a small telescope she bought earlier, and was using it to spy on the mansion she was going to infiltrate.

It was well past midnight, yet the mansion was mostly lit up. Making it easy to spy on.

Yuri now had a rough plan in mind. She had through her many spying sessions discovered that the mansion had a large chimney connected to the heart of the mansion. Luckily this mansion was old and built before simple heating magics were made available, so the chimney had been sitting unused for many years..until now.

As for how she was going to access the roof and the chimney. If she couldn’t access it from the normal entrances then she was going to take the only unguarded route. The sky.

Yuri held both of her palms behind her back and leaned forward like a strange runner preparing to sprint. She activated the runes on both her gauntlets and prepared herself.

A giant gust of wind blew through the city, making many go chasing after their hats, and forcing most women to hold down their skirts die to the strong breeze that appeared from seemingly nowhere.

During this, no on had thought to look up. If they had, they would have seen a bright red flickering star travelling across the night sky.

Yuri was trying her hardest not to panic. She had once again made her spells too powerful. She thought since the distance was greater this time, she would need a bit more power. Her spells were as unpredictable as ever however, and were so powerful they almost tore her arms off. As proven by the bright red flickering form the gauntlets. Almost blinding Yuri with the red glow.

As Yuri flew through the sky with seemingly unending acceleration. She realised she was about to fly the mansion, and her acceleration had yet to begin to slow.

Yuri haphazardly rearranged her arms so her palms pointed towards the opposite of the mansion, and activated another set of air spells.

These ones blew her towards the mansion, making her look like a falling star due to the red glow of the spells.

As she was about to activate her feather falling spell to slow herself down. She realised the spell was no longer there.

It seems that because of the large amount of power in her air spells, some of the other spells accidentally activated. Mainly her feather falling spells.

She had read about this phenomena in one of the tomes she stole. If you have a powerful spell and a weak spell next to each other, the mana from the stronger one ends up activating the weaker one.

(Wait..so I had the feather falling spells on and I STILL flew like a bullet. Somehow I have a feeling I would have died if those feather falling spells didn’t slow me down a bit..)

Yuri thought as she zipped towards the mansion at a speed that rivalled a bullets.

“Oh right!”

Suddenly remembering the situation she was in. She started to draw another spell on her gauntlets.

The spell she was drawing wasn’t a feather fall one however. She realised the feather fall spells were too weak to stop her acceleration. Instead of drawing a spell to suck away her momentum, she tried to draw a new spell she learned that protected the users body against all harm for a few split seconds.

She made sure to jam as many of her special runes as possible, to strengthen the spell.

“Here goes nothing!”

She activated the spell while screaming at the top of her lungs. Her body was enveloped in a half transparent diamond shaped aura. Just a moment after the shield appeared around Yuri, a loud crash echoed throughout the entire city.
