Chapter 15: The Perfect Heist, with a Spice of Misery

A dark room filled with glittering gold. Inside, a covered painting began to glow, obstructed by the cloth covering it. A soft red glowing, that steadily increased, until it filled the entire room with light, scattering long eery shadows from the items scattered about.

Suddenly, the cloth was thrown off, and a young girl wearing a tight fitting black outfit that would have been frowned by any respectable woman from this world.

The girl looked around and smiled at the sight before her, an ominous smile that no one would think a girl that young would have been capable of.

“Everything is going just according to my plan..Hehe~”

Muttering to herself, Yuri set about searching the very large room for the item she came to find. Quickly finding the item standing in the centre.

Encased in a large glass container riddled with Runes, stood a golden staff, simple in design other than for an unfamiliar crest on its top.

It was riddled with dents and scratched and looked well worn. It’s aura, despite its shabby appearance, was unmistakeably that of a godly relic.

“Hmmm..These runes appear to be a bit more advanced than usual..” She mumbled “Not to worry, i have my trusty partner with me!” She drew a small dagger out her pocket in a dramatic fashion and set to work on disabling the runes on the glass.

After trying to disable the many runic spells on the glass for what seemed like an eternity, she finally decided it was impossible to disable the sheer amount of runes.

Since they were no match for Yuris runes and near limitless energy encased in one tiny dagger. She figured she would simply smash the glass and brace herself for any alarms, as she figured it would take too long to be productive otherwise.

Giving the glass case one last look, she found a small key hole in its side. It was made out of glass which had made it hard to notice in the dark. The fact that the lock was made from glass made Yuri scratch her head, but then she figured that they probably used magic.

The small, almost invisible emblem on the keyhole seemed familiar to Yuri.

“Wait a second..”

She took off her necklace that she had recently acquired, which contained a key kept by the queen. That she had nicked along during her escape.

She slowly tried out the key in the keyhole while being extremely cautious.

The glass container began to shake, making Yuri jump back and prepare for the worst. After the shaking stopped, much to Yuri’s surprise, she discovered that were there was once glass, was now nothing.

“Magical glass…?” Slightly shaken, she muttered. “Well, doesn’t matter i guess..” She walked up to the staff and threw a rune covered blanket over it, before strapping it onto her back like some kind of battle monk with his combat staff.

“And now for the bonus!”

The entire rooms floor soon filled with a giant magic circle comprising of thousands of magic runes drawn by Yuri. The room was by no means small, it easily covered what Yuri figured was the equivalent of a football field.

“They are going to be so shocked when they find out that the room previously filled with mountains of gold was now empty..I’m getting shivers just from imagining it..”

Most men would cry over such a creepy smile defiling the young girls pure innocent face.

“Ah, but this wouldn’t be possible without the near infinite mana, thank you, dagger of fruitiness~”

Yuri sang her sentence while drawing the runes with great vigour.

She had previously asked Delem for all the teleport spells available. From the spells she could get her hands on, she opted for putting together the best parts of every runic spell while adding a bit of conventional magic here and there. Even with the giant magic circle and almost infinite mana, the teleportation magic Yuri had comprised, still required the aid of several talented magicians, who were highly versed in teleportation magics.

The magicians were all of course provided by Delem, as was the noble who contributed with an expensive painting that held a magic rune circle inside, from which Yuri had managed to teleport inside this locked vault.

So far everything was going according to plan. She would teleport in, grab the relic, draw a giant magic circle, teleport all the goods through the magic circle, and then exiting through the magic circle in the painting.

The reason Yuri chose to use a personal magic circle for herself was because teleportation magic circles didn’t support living beings. As such, most of her time was spent on improving the smaller circle in the painting so she could safely use it.

Yuri had created a new type of magic that could revolutionise this entire world through the wide spread use of instant transportation.

“Luckily only I can use it because of my dagger ~”

She had said the exact same thing to Hikaru when he warned her about the potential uses of teleportation magics, which seemed to calm his nerves.

“Okay..almost thereeee..done!”

Straightening herself, she cracked her back in the process, like an old man waking up from a long nap.

The process of drawing the circle had taken her several hours, she had stopped counting after the fifth one. Luckily no one had bothered to check inside the vault as all the security was on the outside.

She stepped outside the circle, and activated it. The giant mass of runes that covered the entire floor began to glow in a menacing manner, slowly swallowing up everything inside the circle.

The mountain or expensive rubbish and gold slowly got shorter and shorter until only a sliver remained, which used to be the tip.

The runes shone brightly as they were about to finish their task. The last little bit of gold simply vanished, not bothering with properly sinking like the rest.

“Well that was weird, but at least it worked..?”

Muttering she turned and made her back to the painting, which she couldn’t find for some reason.

Looking around many times, and even running a few laps around the now empty giant room. She suddenly stopped, out of breath and crouched down while holding her head in anguish.

“I FUCKING FORGOT TO TAKE THE PAINTING OUT OF THE CIRCLE!”

Yelling loudly, she instantly covered her mouth, afraid somebody outside might hear her voice which was now echoing against the bare walls.

“Okay..okay..i can’t panic yet..the teleportation spell is still active..since the mages on the other side are still supporting it while waiting for my arrival..i don’t have much time..need to do this before they give up on me and stop their magic..”

She frantically scratched out different runes on the ground. The pattern was by far more complicated than any other spell previously seen. Yet Yuri drew it from memory alone, fear and desperation strengthening her memory.

“Okay..okay…this is probably as close as i can get it..”

She gave the spell a quick glance and activated it without a second thought, her fear of being trapped here when the guards discovered everything was gone, made her irrational.

Yuri had been tortured before, when she had failed to escape during a heist in her original world. It resulted in her, who still a man at that point, to spill the beans almost instantly, even if she did like to play it tough.

She was no good with pain and torture and she knew it. She desperately wanted to avoid being captured by people who were still in the mindset of people in the middle ages. If she was caught there would be heavy torture to pay with no escape in sight.

The spell began to glow with a dim light. Unlike the giant circle, this one began to flicker wildly. It made noises similar to electric circuitry bursting. Something not commonly heard unless one worked jobs that required the abuse and theft of computers to acquire the valuable data within.

“Come on…come on..work..”

She begged the circle to activate. But it continued to flicker uncertainly, as if asking “Are you sure?”. After a few minutes of Yuri begging and praying, the glow finally stopped flickering.

She sighed in relief. However instead of her slowly sinking into the circle like she was supposed to. The opposite happened. Something came out of the circle. Something black and shadowy.

It oozed out from the circle. Yuri attempted to move away from this unknown phenomenon, but realised her legs were stuck in the shadowy goo emerging from the circle.

The shadows slowly began to climb up Yuri’s body. She squirmed uncontrollably, as they flowed past the sensitive parts of her body.

Lucky for her, the shadows didn’t seem to be interested in that sort of thing and simply kept covering her body until all of it was covered by liquid like shadows.

Yuri felt her body slowly sink into the ground while immobilised. She knew she wasn’t going to appear back at the other end where Delem and Hikaru waited for her.

She felt despair creep through her heart.

“Help…Hikaru…”

She wept as her mind turned dark and she lost her consciousness.
