Chapter 3: A sight beyond dreams

An intense stare that could almost be felt was hitting Yuri whilst she dined on a large stone table.

“….Do I have something between my teeth?” Asking with an annoyed tone, Yuri glanced at the nun watching her carefully.

“No, it’s just that you look so cute when you’re eating, like a small hamster”

The nun continued to stare while Yuri finished her plain meal of dried fruits and vegetables.

“Now that I think about it…we haven’t even introduced ourselves..I’ll start, my name is Yuri, and despite my current appearance, I’m a 28 year old man, so please address me with some respect as I am older than you”

Tiredly resting her head on her palm, Yuri waited for the nun to speak up.

“Ah, right, my turn!”

Realising Yuri was waiting for her, she continued “Ehm…let’s see..my name is Mako. I’m in charge of this church, and all the other churches that follow Freiya, my position is…what is it again…I guess it would be called..oh right, the Archbishop of Freiya!”

“Right..And I’m the queen of England. Seriously, what’s your real position, probably an apprentice nun or something…right?”

Making an amused expression, Yuri raised on of her eyebrows at the nun named Mako.

“Ehhhhh, of course I’m the bishop of this place, isn’t it obvious!”

Flailing her arms in slight frustration, Mako protested loudly.

“Well whatever..call yourself whatever you want” Yuri shrugged “You said I couldn’t get my original body back, so can you send me back to my world now? I can probably get a sex change and some plastic surgery or something when I get home, it’s not like I have any shortage of money.”

Already planning which clinic she would visit to get her sex change, Yuri was slightly deep in thought.

“Eh? Go back to your world? Sorry that’s impossible.” Mako smiled politely.

“…Haaaaah!?” Exclaiming in surprise while standing up, Yuri blinked a few times before continuing. “What do you mean impossible? I got here didn’t I, so you can just teleport me back with magic or something, if it’s about money then I’ll gladly pay you when I get back home-”

Mako raised her hand up, interrupting the panicking Yuri.

“It’s not that I wont do it, as I said, its impossible.” Mako motioned for Yuri sit back down.

“The magic that brought you here is most likely a form of displacement magic. A kind of high class magic that is used when you lose something important, and it teleports the desired object back to it’s rightful place. Like for example a cut off hand will obviously appear back on the owners body since that is where it belongs” Mako made a cutting motion on her arm.

“It’s a risky spell too, if the object is not obvious like a body part it might end up anywhere. So it’s most commonly used by healers to reattach limbs and the such.” Pointing at the ornamental knife in Yuri’s pocket she continued.

“The knife however, is a godly item, so it belongs to the god of its choice, in this case, Freiya, it got placed back here by the magic because all the churches of Freiya count as parts of her body. Why you got brought along with the knife however, that’s something for spell theorists to figure out”

Makos behaviour while explaining was back to its patient and calming manner, like when Yuri first saw her. She had a comforting aura.

“But..if its magic that brings things to their rightful place..couldn’t it just place me back home, in my world, since that is where I belong?”

Biting her lip in concentration, Yuri was attempting to figure out a loophole in a system defying common sense and the laws of physics she commonly knew.

“Well…as I said..it difficult unless its painfully obvious where it belongs, and since your body was changed in this world..which can count as a rebirth..it”s a bit of a grey area as to where you belong. And even if it works, or we find another way. it’s still another world..travel between different worlds is fairly..well extremely difficult. There is an endless amount of worlds out there, and there is no way to tell which is which. It also takes an unimaginable amount of mana to transfer something between worlds, since you have to quite literally rip apart the void to do so.”

Mako spoke with a serious yet controlled tone while looking at Yuri.

“The only entity capable of doing something like that would be one of the gods, and even they would have a hard time transferring a living creature, and that is only if they combine their mana together. Which is fairly..unlikely to happen. They all hate each other now, don’t ask. Besides they still haven’t recovered from the last god war. Since if they did we would be seeing mountains fly by on a daily basis.” She smiled awkwardly “At least now its only once every few years..”

Finally finished with her explanation, Mako looked back at Yuri and found her crouching in the corner of the room with an expression filled with doom and gloom.

“Ah…so it’s all pointless…i can’t go back..all my riches..my money..my reputation that I worked so hard for…all pointless..”

Muttering slowly to herself, Yuri quickly sank deeper and deeper into the gloom of her heart.

“Erm..how are you feeling, Yuri-chan..?”

Carefully approaching, Mako lightly patted the little girls head.

Yuri continued to mumble things under her breath while drawing small circles on the ground with her fingers.

“Aw come on..this world isn’t so bad, we have magic, your world didn’t have that right?” She attempted to cheer Yuri up “So cheer up, lets go explore the temple and I’ll show you some magic spells on the way!” Saying this she lifted up Yuri like a child and patted her back.

Depressed enough to not even have the strength to lift a single finger, Yuri simply lay limp in her arms as she was carried away by the self proclaimed Bishop.

Nearly every available space of each room she was carried through contained some manner of statue. Usually of Freiya, but also of various shapes covered with runes that reminded Yuri of the time she stole a viking rune stone that weighed over 2 tons.

This memory almost made Yuri smile, but her mood was brought down again by the fact that none of her previous achievements mattered anymore.

“Here we are, the outside!”

A pair of heavy iron doors slowly split open in front of the, slowly revealing the bright outside.

Yuri’s jaw was left hanging upon witnessing the scene in front of her, all of her previous depressing thoughts seemingly blown away by the soft wind that was now showering over her.

An azure sky made out of the softest looking blue fabric. With clouds as white as the freshest milk scattered across it, fluffier than cotton candy, floating through the sky in a fashion similar to when one pours milk into tea.

Underneath the bright blue sky. Deep canyons, covered in radiant waterfalls that stretched deep down into the dark below. There were so many canyons, that one would wonder how anyone could get around without any bridges.

That question was quickly answered by the many fragile looking objects floating through the sky. Boats, supported by paper balloons, flowed out of each corner, flowing just past each other harmoniously.

Scattered around and across the canyons were churches and castles, each one more beautiful than anything in any painting Yuri remembered. Several of the floating boats passing by, paused briefly while Yuri was taking in the unimaginable view. The people aboard bowed respectfully, saying things such as “Good day, master bishop” or “Thank you for your hard work, miss bishop”.

“…..You actually were a bishop huh.” Yuri gave the supposed Bishop Mako a doubtful glance “i always thought they were supposed to be wrinkly old men..and a bishop of such a place too..if it weren’t for the people just now, I would have thought you drunk.”

Still looking doubtful, Yuri looked around while ignoring the gazes of the people who passed by on their balloon boats.

“Well anyway, let’s get going?”

A floating boat appeared just as Mako finished her sentence, this one seemingly without a driver.

“Ladies first~”

Motioning towards the boat while smiling mischievously, Mako edged Yuri to get on.
