Chapter 43: Escaping the blazing

Chapter 43: Escaping the blazing

Yuri managed to get safely down from the sky by drawing a feather fall spell on her tiny makeshift shield, smoothly floating down and landing on the ground with a soft thud.

When she finally landed in the chaos of people running for their lives from the solid mana raining down, Yuri noticed something black falling along with the drops of gold.

“Oh yeah..I didn't give him any feather fall spells did I..”

Casually saying this, she proceeded to draw another feather fall spell on her shield, and also drawing a water spell on the other side, all the while people were running and screaming all around her.

“Ugh..so noisy..can't concentrate.”

Finally finished drawing the spells, she activated the water spell and threw the shield in the air like a Frisbee.

The spell activated in mid air and shot out a burst of water from the shield, propelling it towards the sky, in the general direction of the falling Hikaru.

The burst also happened to hit an old man in the head, making him fall over. But Yuri paid that no mind, simply pretending it wasn't her but one of the solid mana chunks that hit him.

“What do I do now. At this rate I will not survive!”

Hikaru was in the middle of falling at a tremendous speed, while the ribbon on his sword had retreated back to its usual white appearance, now just covering the sword handle.

It wiggled frantically, having a similar thought to Hikaru.

“What is that..?”

He looked at the peculiar object that was growing bigger and bigger in the distance, no it wasn't growing, it was getting closer at a high speed.

Being too tired, and surprised, he didn't manage to even react, the object hitting him in the head with a loud vibrating clang.

It stuck to his face until he slowly dragged it off as it was almost glued to his face due to how strong it hit him.

“What is this..”

He looked at the small shield while still falling through the sky.

“....Much obliged Yuri.”

Activating the runes on the shield, he managed to slow his fall almost completely. eventually landing softly on the ground.

“Hey there, superman how was the flight?”

Yuri appeared from behind him.

“Who..man..?”

“Never mind that, here cover that up will you, you're drawing too much attention”

She said. Although no one was even paying them the slightest bit of attention. Everyone being far too busy with running or flying for their lives.

Those that had lost their travelling devices were an amusing sight to see, as they had long since forgot how to properly run, and were instead running in a way that made them seem like they had crapped their pants. Not to mention that they got winded after only a few steps so they were forced to rest all the time.

She threw a blanket she had stolen over the horn that was hanging on Hikaru's sword.

The blanket had small coins glued to it which bore sealing runes.

Hikaru glanced questioningly at the blanket.

“Look I had to improvise okay? There was no paint around, so I just etched the runes on coins and glued them on a blanket. If it works it works.”

If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

With the horn sealed inside the blanket, she placed it into a bag she got from the rubble around them.

“We should probably leave too, as much as I fancy just looting this place-”

A wagon exploded nearby when a piece of golden solid mana hit it.

“-I don't think there's going to be much of this place left to loot. Besides if people don't know something was stolen, it's pointless to steal.”

“I will carry you out of bounds of the rain of mana, my legs will carry us both quickly enough for us to avoid the chaos on the roads.”

“Yeah but what would we do once we are out of the city, walk for miles? Or what had you decided you would carry me like a princess all the way to the next city?”

She sneered slightly.

“I don't see why not. My body has far more stamina than a normal human body, I should be able to last for a day before I need rest.”

Answering carelessly, Hikaru went up to Yuri and picked her up into the familiar princess carry.

“W-wait stop! I was joking! What the hell are you doing! Seriously! You want to carry me like this for a whole day!? Put me down! What's wrong with you!”

Blushing, she flailed her legs angrily until Hikaru put her down again.

“I don't understand the problem..is it uncomfortable to be carried like that for long periods of time..?”

“No! Geez! It's not that! I mean..it's very comfortable..just..embarrassing..so..”

Her words trailed off, and she ended up looking down with a slight blush on her face.

A warm hand ruffled her hair gently.

“Alright. Let's go find something to ride then”

Saying this, he began to look around for any kind of usable wagon, but it seemed like most of the wagons and travelling machines had been used by the people to flee the city.

“Hmm....this doesn't look promising.”

Slowly recovering from her mumbling state. Yuri remembered something.

“Oh! I know where we can find something to ride!”

A small piece of solid mana exploded the ground between them slightly, making them hurry towards the place Yuri suggested.

“Here look!”

She pointed at a blue-ish plate sticking out of the rubble.

“Told you there would be one. Since it's underground, people probably wouldn't come here to get anything, they much rather just flee out the city, besides this place is kind of a mess now..”

They were inside the underground space where the horn had been kept. Although now it was more like a giant hole filled with rubble.

Hikaru pulled out the board and confirmed that it still floated.

“We are good to leave”

The rain of golden death had not yet ceased, despite it having been almost an hour.

They were unsure where all that extra solid mana was coming from, but it was likely some strange reaction of the solid mana with the high atmosphere weather containing a rich source of nature mana.

They had (possibly) in a way, created a new natural phenomena.

“Alright, Yuri get on. Let's leave before this gets any worse.”

“Wait, just let me see if..aha!”

Crouching down, Yuri picked up a dirty looking metal heart and put it in her bag.

“This will come in handy later”

A thunderous explosion filled the sky, and more fragments of solid golden mana began to rain down from the sky, these ones much larger than the ones before.

“Yuri! If you don't get on I will be forced to carry you out of the city myself!”

“I-I'm coming! You don't have to threaten me! Since when have you become so cruel!”

Quickly hopping on the floating plate, Hikaru activated the spell on the scooter like plate and they headed off.

“I am strict when it comes to your safety. I have been far too lenient and allowed you to get into dangerous situations far too many times. From now on, I will make sure that you are either completely ready for anything or have me by your side.”

“You sure sound like a helicopter parent Hikaru..I'm not a kid you know, and you aren't my parent, I've been in situations much more dangerous than this. Well...not flying rampaging made of magical energy dragon sort of dangerous..but still!”

Retorting while pouting slightly. Yuri held on to the plate while they speeded through the rubble filled city.

“I know. I am however your bodyguard. Although I believe in your ability to accomplish anything you want. I rather not take any chances. For the sake of acquiring the relics.”

He answered seriously.

“Ugh...fine..man you're preachy today all of a sudden. What's up with that?”

She said as if the fact that they had destroyed an entire city, which was most likely the most advanced in this realm, only a mere hour ago, was just another everyday occurrence.

“Nothing..Just slightly cautious that's all.”

The image of the sun symbol on the two metal hearts of the dragon, floated in his head.

(If she even got to something this powerful..and actually managed to infiltrate even this city..how many more..how many more potential enemies has she created for us..)
