Chapter 19: Sparks and Bracelets

Chapter 19: Sparks and Bracelets

“You want me to work as an assassin?”

Yuri asked.

“Yes, I suppose you could call it that as well. Your job would be to take care of the leading roles before a battle. You have shown yourself capable by taking care of a room filled with soldiers. This wont be as easy, the enemy never lets their guard down. It will be different on a real battlefield. Whether you survive or not…That is hat can be considered the real test for joining our cause.”

The captain bent down and took out something from a chest behind him.

“Here, take this bracelet, wearing this will ensure no one from our side attacks you. It’s made from new-type smithing methods. More efficient than the traditional ones, a sort of message of ours.”

He gave her the bracelet that looked to be made from plastic like material.

(So this is what they mean with newtype…they discovered how to make plastic, which was frowned at by the noblemen since plastic is cheaper to make..?)

She thought while putting the bracelet on her arm.

(This bracelet..doesn’t fit..too damn big. What kind of muscle men are these made for..the only place it would fit is my neck..guess it can be a necklace..)

Putting the bracelet around her neck made the captain frown slightly. Although Yuri didn’t notice it, wearing the bracelet on her neck made it look like she was wearing a collar. She was too busy thinking about the potential of plastic in this world to notice though.

“Well anyway..There are no battles right now. There was one today, which we splendidly had to retreat from. So for now go and help the soldiers you knocked down.”

The captain went back to playing around with small figures situated atop a map.

“Alright captain, I’m off!”

She ran out of the room, making a slight breeze which hit the captain in the face, moving his hair slightly.

“Peculiar girl..good thing she’s working with us though..but wearing that as a collar…” He grumbled.

Entering the room, Yuri found the soldiers being helped by healers. They were slowly waking up while letting out groggy noises as they were awoken by healing magic.

Walking up to one of the healers, she tapped him on the shoulder.

“Hey, I’m gonna help out so could you gather up all these soldiers into one big pile for me, please?”

Yuri asked politely while drawing a large circle of runes on the ground.

“Hah? Who are you, a new recruit? Don’t interrupt me!”

The healer responded in an annoyed manner and went back to healing the soldier in front of him.

“Geez..what’s up with the captain suddenly throwing this weird test..as if I don’t have enough work..”

Meanwhile, Yuri had finished drawing the basic healing circle, which was improved with her own runes of course. She began to drag the soldiers bodies onto the circle.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

“Hey, girl, stop that! A wonky basic healing circle wont even heal their scratches, just go get some wet towels or something!”

One of the healers yelled at Yuri with a similar expression to the previous healer.

She finished amassing as many bodies as could fit onto the circle and activated it. It glowed in a bight red light that had some green shining through it.

The green light was slowly absorbed into the soldiers bodies while the red disappeared.

All the soldiers suddenly woke up. Stretching while yawning.

“Ah, I feel so refreshed, did I doze off?”

Making similar comments, all of them appeared to be in more perfect shape than before Yuri had incapacitated earlier. The healers stood with open mouths.

Afterwards, Yuri was silently helped by the healers who assisted with carrying the soldiers while looking at Yuri with respectful eyes.

Finally finished with healing, she ended up just sitting around with nothing to do, while the healers next to her asked her about her magic. Surprised to hear that the spell she had used was only a basic healing spell, making their respect deepen.

This ended Yuri’s first day at the rebellion army, and she went back to her inn.

Inside, she found Galin, the dwarf-ish man on his way out.

“Hey, heading somewhere Galin?”

“Yeah, work. I’m a night guard, remember?”

Lightly pushing Yuri out of the way, he mumbled in a tired voice.

“Well good luck, and don’t let any more children into the big scary rebellion infested city~”

She teased the dwarf as he walked past, making him mumble with a sigh.

Yuri laid down on her bed without sleeping, just waiting for the time to pass, until it was late enough that even the bats were asleep.

She crawled out of the inn and made her way towards the bank of the city.

Yuri wasn’t going to wait for a chance to appear while working for the rebellion. If she could get the relic now, she might as well do it.

But if she fails. The rebellion can serve as a good backup plan.

Finally arriving at a large obsidian black building that appeared more solidly built than a fort, she muttered to herself while deep in thought.

“…This is the bank huh..can’t go in with brute force..not that I as going to do that anyway..”

Making a quick check around the building, she found that the only entrance was the big gate at the front. There weren’t even any windows to be seen.

“I guess windows are a structural integrity..but are all banks built like this here..?”

“Sure am glad I came up with the painting thing in Urnan..no way to break into something like this without an inside job..”

She had never bothered to take a look at where the vault was kept in Urnan, so the only part of it she saw was the inside. As such she was shocked at the sight before her.

“Well..i guess I will get a few hours of sleep..before the rebellion thing..”

Yawning, she began to make her way back. She stopped at the feel of some ones hand on her shoulder.

“Girl. What are you doing outside at this hour?”

Turning around, she found Galin slowly sheathing his large sword back onto his back.

“Eh? What are you doing here yourself!”

“..I told you didn’t I..I’m a night guard.” He sighed. “How airheaded are you, girl?”

Galin gave her a sympathetic look.

“I’m not airheaded!” She pouted “And don’t call me girl, I have a name goddamnit.”

Folding her arms, she gave the dwarf-ish man a mean look.

“Al alright then, Yuri, why were you out so late at night?”

“Ah..i was..having trouble sleeping so I needed some fresh air!”

She lied through her teeth. The truth as that she was tired enough to faint. Although she was expertly not showing it.

“Ah, well you look like a maid after a long night if you know what I mean. So get some sleep.”

Galin said as Yuri’s confidence in her being able to hide her state of mind was instantly crushed.

“And don’t wander around at night, its dangerous for a young girl.”

He said as he walked off, pretending to work.

“Phew that was close..although I haven’t even done anything so i’m fine..?”

“But with the bank being like it is..and me not being able to get a teleport going without the help of Delem or Hikaru…i really need to get some sparks going in this city..and then an opportunity will arise..”

Her smile was ominous. Looking quite haunting in the dark. This would later create legends of a certain wandering demon that took the shape of a young girl. Wandering the dark streets at the latest of hours on moonless nights. Searching for those foolish enough to be near it.

But that, is a story for another time.
