Chapter 23: Allies and Traitors

Chapter 23: Allies and Traitors

The chirping of beards reached inside the room through a giant hole in the wall. Yuri sat on a sofa while listening to the distant bird song, waiting for Jac who had presumably run off to get a change of pants.

She was sure what she did was stupid. Intimidation was never Yuri’s area of expertise. It would have been less risky to just steal the information from him.

“No, I refuse to play nice with someone like that. Pissing me off with his flippant attitude…that look on his face when I made a hole in the wall was just perfect!”

She laughed to herself while listening the servants bickering about cleaning up the mess.

The door opened a few minutes later, and a much more respectful Jac entered the room. He was trying his best at pretending to be casual. It was obvious he was nervous however as his smile was stiff and he had large drops of sweat threatening to fall down his nose.

“Forgive me attitude earlier..i was uh..drunk..now I have had some water and medicine so I’m alright now..yes..”

He stood awkwardly in front of Yuri while bowing his head slightly.

“Now..what was it you wished to discuss..?” He smiled nervously at Yuri.

“Right, now that you are actually willing to listen..” She coughed “Well, let’s see. I have been hired to kill you, sort of.”

She said casually. Jac’s face paled to a sheet white, his eyes shifting to the giant hole behind him.

“Calm down. If I wanted to kill you, you would have a giant hole in your chest~”

Yuri winked at him.

“But I’m not heartless you know, so I’m willing to let you live in exchange for a simple trade.”

Her smile widened.

“…What manner of trade?” Jac asked carefully while squinting.

“Your life for some information on your previously owned bank.”

Stating her demands, her honest smile was reflected in Jac’s eyes.

“…I’m afraid I can’t accept that trade offer…”

He paled further with each word.

“….It’s your life you’re refusing you know?”

She was amazed that this kind of bratty man would be willing to risk his life for anything.

“That bank..is our family’s treasure and pride..it’s been passed down in ownership throughout the family ever since the city first began its existence..it is not something I am ever willing to betray..”

His voice filled with pride.

“Even though the bank belongs to the rebels now..?”

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

“The bank will always belong to the Jacston family!”

He proclaimed with pride audible in his voice.

“It is only a matter of time before it is reclaimed once again by our family!”

He stated as if it were fact.

“Hah….”Yuri sighed. “Fine..how about..i help you get your stupid bank back..and you give me one item from inside it..Just one.”

“Something from the bank…even if it is one item..”

Jac seemed troubled by her request, although he was tempted by her offer.

“If we had someone of your strength, then taking back the building would be possible..although we lack information about the rebels formations and security inside the bank..that would still make it difficult despite your help..”

“If it’s information about the rebels, I can probably get you what you need~”

She smiled knowingly.

“Oh…in that case. Even if I have to give away something from the bank, I’m sure my ancestors will forgive me. Since reclaiming the bank is more important. I, Jac of the Jacston family, accept your offer and temporary partnership!”

He took her hand and firmly shook it in a businessman like fashion.

“That’s the spirit, I don’t have to kill you after all.” She said as Jacs hand froze midway through the handshake.

“That went better than expected..”

Yuri finally walked out of the mansion after finishing discussing things with Jac.

“Not only am I going to get information on the bank, i’m also going to get help from a high standing nobleman and his forces..i can feel my luck returning to me!”

Laughing and stretching dramatically, she pretended she could feel power running through her body. Which she knew was simply her imagination as despite her efforts, she still had only one mana.

“Alright, enough messing around.. I should start thinking on how to get the information from the rebels..”

She walked towards the rebels hideout while thinking.

“Hmm..well the captain looks strong, so I don’t think I could intimidate him even if I blew several holes in the hideout..”

The brick like man of a captain had the air of someone who had survived many battles.

“Guess I will have to try and be sneaky about it.”

Arriving at the hideout, she made her way towards the captains quarters and entered without permission as that had now become the norm. The captain didn’t bother looking up and just sighed when he heard Yuri come in.

“That thing about a meteor falling inside old man bobs house and scaring him to death..i assume that was you?

He put away a document he was working on.

“Yup.” She nodded happily.

“I know i didn’t specify how you had to do it, but please do the remaining ones more discretely if possible…” He sighed again.

“So, what is it you want, i hope you didn’t come here to just brah about your first target, if you want to do that, do it to the soldiers outside, i’m sure they would be happy to listen to your tales..i’ve had enough of those..”

Waving his hand, he motioned for her to leave.

“Well actually, i had some business with you..”

Yuri activated a spell on her gauntlet behind her back and walked closer towards the captain.

“Like i said..go bother the soldiers if you are looking for something like that. I’m not into little girls..”

The captain raised an eyebrow, clearly misunderstanding Yuri’s intentions as she looked very peculiar trying to sneak next to him in an overly obvious manner.

“-what?!”

Yuri blushed slightly and got annoyed for some reason.

Fuelled by this peculiar irritation, she gave the captain an upwards hit with her palm, that now had crackling lightning swirling in it, and landed a sold hit on the captains chin.

The captain did not expect any sudden attacks. He briefly widened his eyes, before quickly losing consciousness, his pupils floating to the back of his head and revealing the whites of his eyes.

“A hit to the head with a taser works against everyone, even people like you captain..”

She smirked as the captain collapsed in his seat, his muscles no longer supporting him.

“Now. Let’s see if there’s anything useful among all theses documents..”

She began riffling through the piles of documents, trying to look through as much as possible before the captain wakes up and realises what had happened.
