Chapter 80 Chapter 80
Linda felt her blood pressure rising, unable to believe the turn of events. All the machinations she'd done to get that lowlife out of her son's life now seemed to be amounting to nothing. The woman obviously had Kris back under her thumb, and she had to do something about it.
"What are you trying to say, Kris?" she demanded, the hurt in her voice carefully cajoled. "Are you saying that I also faked the evidence against that woman?"
Kris let out a frustrated breath. "Mum, that's not what I'm saying. I-"
"Then what are you saying?" Linda cut him off. "The day we caught her with that man in the hotel suite, she accused me of being the one who gave her the fraudulent documents to have them signed. If you're saying you now believe her, then you're accusing me of framing her."
She dissolved into tears. "What outrageous crime are you going to accuse me of next simply because Thalassa says, so? That I'm the one who sent someone to attack her and her unborn child?"
The mention of the unborn child was like a sucker punch to Kris's gut, making it difficult to breathe as that night flashed in his mind.
Thalassa's desperation, begging him to believe her when she said that she was pregnant, and yet he'd ignored it all and kicked her out of the house.
It was all his fault. If he'd believed her and allowed her to stay, she wouldn't have been attacked and lost the baby.
His mother was still crying, and despite his own pain, Kris stepped closer and pulled her into his embrace.
"I'm sorry, Mum. I would never accuse you of something like that because I know you would never be capable of it."
With her face buried in her son's chest, Linda smirked, relieved that he'd fallen for her act.
"But whoever was behind it isn't going to go scot-free, I swear," Kris vowed as he pulled back from the hug, and Linda's heart skipped a beat. She didn't like that he had decided to pursue the matter. (1 She swallowed. "Do you... Do you have any suspects?"
"Karen," Kris stated, a frosty look settling on his face.
"Karen?" she faked a gasp. "That would be horrible, but do you really think Karen could've been capable of something like that? Killing an unborn child?"
"I never imagined she would have Thalassa assaulted just to try and separate us, but here I am today," Kris noted with bitterness.
Linda cleared her throat. "Look, honey, I'm not trying to defend Karen, but what if the attack on Thalassa wasn't planned? What if it was just a robbery or the man tried to abuse her, and she resisted, which made him beat her up?"
After how Karen had betrayed her, Linda thought of letting her take the blame, but she was afraid that if Kris continued investigating, he would eventually find out the truth. That's why she needed to distract his mind with other possibilities. Seeing the pensive look on Kris's face, Linda was hopeful that she'd managed to plant doubts in his head, but to her distress, he spoke determinedly,
"Thalassa told me that the man said he was sent to give her a message before he proceeded to beat her, and I believe her, Mum. That attack was planned by someone, and if it wasn't Karen, then whoever it was will pay for
it."noveldrama
With that, he stormed out of the study, leaving Linda gnashing her teeth furiously.
Damn that stupid woman!
