Karen took advantage of Thalassa's distraction to free herself and run into Kris's arms.
"Kris... sweetheart, please help me. She wants to kill me. She wants to kill me. Just look... look what she has done to me," Karen cried, pointing at her face where Thalassa's slap had left it as red as a beetroot.
Kris was stunned at what he was seeing on Karen's face. The slap marks were so brutal that he couldn't believe Thalassa had done something like this. He'd never known her to be a violent person. How could she have changed so much? "What has gotten into you? How dare you treat Karen like this?!" he sneered.
"Don't speak to her like that," Zeke demanded as he appeared behind Kris and walked to stand beside Thalassa.
Instinctively, he cradled Thalassa's cheek in his hands as he asked, "Are you okay?
Thalassa stiffened at the unexpected touch, but she didn't pull away as she nodded.
Kris instantly recognized the man. It was Zeke Mathews, the man Thalassa had gotten involved with just a few days after their divorce. His eyes darkened as he and Zeke glared at each other, tension thick in the air.
Kris finally looked away, returning his gaze to Thalassa. "You weren't satisfied after attacking my mom and my sister, and now you're attacking Karen?"
Thalassa felt her heart squeeze painfully. In the one year they had been married, Kris never once stood up for her or defended her from his family's humiliation. But here he was, defending Karen so passionately.
Despite the ache in her chest, she scoffed nonchalantly. "I see that your family ran to report the incident to you, but perhaps all of you need to be schooled on the meaning of attack. They came to my company to attack me. Your mother slapped me. I only defended myself."
She tilted her head to the side, raising a brow. "As for your dear wife, why don't you ask her what she did to make me do something like that to her?"
Kris slowly turned his head towards Karen, who panicked slightly before quickly speaking, "L... I only came here to plead with her to stop targeting our family, and she got upset and did this to me. She accused me of all sorts of things. She accused me of killing her unborn child, but we all know that can't be true because her pregnancy wasn't real."
Thalassa gritted her teeth, not believing Karen was still using that tactic.noveldrama
"She even said that I was your mother's accomplice. That the two of us paid someone to attack her to make her lose her baby. Can you believe it?"
At the mention of his mother, Kris's eyes blazed as he looked back at Thalassa. "When are you going to stop with all the lies and malice?"
"Of course, you would say that, because you never once cared about our child," Thalassa fumed. "It happened on the night you and your family kicked me out of your house, was alone and wandering the streets in the middle of the night. That's when I got attacked." "And because of that, you think it's my mother?" Kris snorted.
"He told me he'd been sent to give me a message, and he kicked me several times in the abdomen until I passed out. I woke up in the hospital."
"If what you're saying is true, then why did you never call me to tell me about it?" he questioned.
"Are you mocking me?" Thalassa was furious. "The hospital sent messages to your company several times, but you never came to see me. You kicked me out after our divorce without caring about what could happen to me. I even sent you a-
Before she could finish, Kris cut her off. "Without caring what could happen to you?" He let out a chuckle. "You stole millions from me and my family, Thalassa. I could've gotten it all back from you or left you to rot in jail, but I let you keep it after we divorced because despite everything, I didn't want you to go unprotected."
Disgust filled his eyes. "But I guess your greed was just so much that you had to go and let another man fuck you. just so you could get more money. Wait. A man? Who knows just how many men you fucked to amass all this wealth? I expected better from you. His words were like a sword stabbing straight through her chest, making her stumble back from the pain.
"How dare you say those things about her?" Zeke raged, ready to surge toward Kris, but Thalassa held him back by the arm.
She looked at Kris. "What makes you think I have any interest in what you think of me, Kris?"
Kris remembered how much Thalassa had pleaded with him not to divorce her, to the extent that he'd questioned himself whether he was doing the right thing, and it pained him even more.
"When you rushed to my house begging me not to divorce you, what was the need, huh? What was the need of acting all desperate and begging me to take you back when you already had a backup plan?" Kris demanded, feeling bitter and pained.
