Chapter 7: Broken Engagement

Chapter 7: Broken Engagement

{Rachel}

To tell the truth, I was very excited about finally breaking off the engagement and sticking it to my parents. The funny thing is my parents truly think that I'm doing some wedding planning for my wedding with Levi when that's not the case. I haven't done anything to plan for this wedding because it's not going to happen. I've been telling my parents this ever since I accepted Levi's marriage proposal.

I had sex with Levi just to appease him and my parents. Thankfully, I have a job that's on the other side of the country away from my parents' influence so they can't force me to quit. Not to mention I've called my parents friends and business partners that they wanted me to invite to the wedding and told them what's been going on and they've been really understanding and accepting my sexuality for what it is. Now all I have to do is get my parents to see reason.

So Friday came and I couldn't sit still because I was so excited about finally getting my parents off my back and if they still couldn't accept me for who I am, sexuality and all then today might also be the last day that I see them. It's their loss and not mine. At this point I'm getting tired of doing things just to live up to their standards!

I'm well off without them. The trust fund that they put in my name I took that and moved it to another account. I'm old enough to make my own decisions. I'm twenty-three years old for crying out loud!

Anyway, when I saw what my girlfriend was dressed in today, I knew I was going to have a hard time keeping my hands to myself while we were dealing with my parents. Although I had half a mind to fuck her right front of them but that would probably give them a heart attack.

Lauren smiled when she saw me eyeing her up and down. She giggled, "See something you like?"

I nodded. "Oh I see everything that I like! Too bad I can't fuck you right front of my parents just to make a point. But that would put them in the hospital because their small minded hearts won't be able to accept that their daughter is a lesbian!"

Lauren snorted. "Yeah in consideration of your parents I'd say keep your hands to yourself and behave until we finish breaking the news to them."

Before Lauren could say anything else, there was a knock on my apartment door. It was Levi and he was dressed in his formal attire just like he always does when we go visit my parents.

Since Evelyn was still asleep because of being sick she wouldn't be able to come with us when we broke the news to our parents about the break up. Honestly, I think it's for the best right now. Evelyn's going to need time to process the information once the news breaks.

Levi smiled at me. "You guys ready to go?"

I nodded. "Oh yeah! I'm ready!"

Lauren snickered. "Wow, someone's eager to get rid of their fiancé!"

Levi chuckled, "Yeah I'm ready to get rid of her also Ms. Terra."

"Hey!" I said.

Levi rolled his eyes. "Alright then, let's go."

We walked down the steps to the car that was waiting for us out front. The drive to my parents seemed rather short as I fantasized about what my life was going to be like after this.

When we got to my parents house, actually it was more like a mansion, Levi got out of the car first and then came around to my side and opened the door. I got out first and Lauren followed. As we walked up the front steps Levi walked in front of me and Lauren walked to the right side of me as I held her hand.

My parents' butler named Walter greeted us at the door and told us that my parents were sitting outside in the garden. They were expecting us today because I had told them we were coming over so of course they would be sitting out in the garden expecting to do some wedding planning with us.

My Mom perked up when she saw Levi enter the garden first ahead of Lauren and I.

"Levi, darling! It's so nice to see you again!" Mom said as she greeted him.

Levi nodded. "Mrs. Hadder, it's nice to see you too!"

Levi took a seat at the nearby table across from Dad who didn't bother to get up and greet him. As matter of fact he looked rather bored and he looked like he didn't want to be here. I don't blame him because I don't want to be here today either but this has to be done. I need to make it clear to my parents once and for all what my life is going to be like.

Mom looked at Dad and frowned. "Dear, I know you don't like wedding planning as much as any normal man does but at least be polite to our guests!"

Dad rolled his eyes and shrugged. "Hi Levi…"

Levi just sat there with an amused look on his face. It wasn't until after my Dad's lackluster greeting to Levi that my Mom paused when she saw me holding hands with Lauren.

"And why is my daughter holding hands with someone who isn't her fiancé?" Mom growled.

"Because I'm not her fiancé anymore," Levi said.

Mom's jaw dropped. "Huh?"

"Mom, how many times do I have to tell you that I'm a lesbian?" I said.

Mom looked at me and hissed. "You! Stop your rebellious phase at once! I will NOT HAVE A DAUGHTER WHO IS GAY!"

"And you need to stop thinking that I'm a teenager! I'm twenty-three years old and I can make my own decisions goddamn it!" I snarled.

"Don't you raise your voice at me child!" Mom shouted. She went to slap me but I caught her wrist right before she could.

"That's another thing, I'm getting tired of trying to live up to your ways of thinking what is right and what is wrong! I'm not changing who I am anymore just to please you!" I said.

Dad stepped in between us and pulled Mom away from me because she looked like she was getting ready to beat me to a pulp! He gave her a stern look. "You know something dear? I'm getting tired of your small minded ideas about how women should act also. And we're in America and this isn't the 1900's anymore! Why do you think I'm not interested in the wedding planning much?"

Mom's jaw dropped again. "But dear, you never said anything about that!"

"Uh, actually I did. I just got tired of fighting with you on the issue," Dad said. "Which is why I was very surprised when Rachel announced her engagement to Levi." He turned his attention to me. "I'm going to assume that you did it just to please your mother?"

I nodded. Dad sighed, "I was afraid that might happen. So I'm guessing the woman standing beside you is your girlfriend?"

I smiled. "Yup! This is my girlfriend!" I turned to Lauren. "Ms. Terra say hi!"

Lauren giggled, "Hi Mr. Hadder!"

Dad held out his hand and she shook it. I tried not to laugh as I saw that Mom had a scowl on her face. It was hard to keep myself composed when I saw Levi sitting there watching the drama unfold with an amused look on his face.

Dad looked at Levi with a look of sympathy. "I'm so sorry Levi. If you want I know of a couple of women who kill to be in my daughter's place."

Levi snorted and shook his head. "Thanks but no thanks. I already have someone in mind. I just came here to break the news of the broken engagement to you guys."

"Wait, what about the wedding planning?" Mom said.

"Don't worry about that because we were never really planning a wedding," I said. "Why do you think nobody RSVPed the wedding invitations yet? Or sent us gifts yet?"

Mom's jaw dropped again and I lost count on how many times she's had to pick her jaw off the floor today. "No you didn't!"

I smiled. "Yes I did!"

Levi chuckled, "Well now that we've done what we came here to do. I have some things I need to take care of like breaking the news publicly about our broken engagement."

He stood up and shook Dad's hand. After that he nodded and when he left the room I followed suit while still holding Lauren's hand.

{Levi}

The ride back to my place was a silent one. I didn't mind it at all because it was worth it if it meant that I could move forward in pursuing a relationship with Evelyn and Rachel would be able to be with her girlfriend Ms. Terra. Honestly, I'm really happy with how things went at Rachel's parents house because trust me things could've gone a lot worse.

When we got back to my place I froze when I heard Evelyn howling in pain.

"Shit!" I said. I heard Ms. Terra say the same thing but she got a two second head start before running upstairs to the guest room where Evelyn was staying and I followed suit.

I got to the door and froze staring at Evelyn in horror as she writhed and howled in pain on the bed. She looked pale and she seemed to be getting paler by the moment. Ms. Terra ran over the bed and grabbed Evelyn and after taking her shoes off she got into bed and held Evelyn in her arms. I was touched by the way Ms. Terra held Evelyn because it looked like that way a mother would hold her daughter with loving concern.

"Shhh, it's okay my Little Eve I'm here! Mother Terra is here," Ms. Terra said while rubbing Evelyn's back trying her best to calm her down. Ms. Terra grabbed Evelyn's left hand and looked at the black dots on it. "Good, looks like she might wake up in a couple of days. She'll be fine as long as we keep giving her the shots while she's asleep and monitor her, she'll come out of this with no problems."

"What are the shots for?" I asked.

"They're to make sure she stays alive while she's sleeping. Good thing only Agents get this type of sickness because a normal human wouldn't be able to make it through this," Ms. Terra said.

"So this is an illness that's job related?" I said.

Ms. Terra nodded. "Exactly."

"Awww, you two look so cute like that!" Rachel said.

I didn't even realize that she was behind until she said something. I just about jumped a foot in the air when I heard her voice.

"The way you're consoling Evelyn right now looks like a mother consoling her daughter, it's adorable really," Rachel said.

Ms. Terra's eyes went wide and then she gave Rachel a side eye look as if to tell her to shut up or else. Something told me based on that look alone Rachel knew more about what was going on with Evelyn than I did.

Ms. Terra sighed, "I know that look when I see it Levi. I can't tell what's going on until after you sign the contract."

I paused. "Contract?"

She nodded. "Yes, before you two start dating you'll have to sign a contract. It's sort of an NDA of sorts. It's hard to explain. I don't why the Elder's didn't have Jeremy sign one. It makes me wonder if it was because they didn't think that the relationship would go anywhere. And unfortunately, they were right."

"I see," I said.

"I'll explain more later," She said. She looked at Rachel. "Rachel my love, I'm going to stay a little bit longer just to make sure my Little Eve is okay enough to hand her over to your ex-fiancé's care again."

Rachel chuckled, "It's okay, I totally understand. Just let me know when you leave okay?"

She went over to Ms. Terra and gave her a kiss on her lips. After that, she left the room.

"Is there anything you want me to get you?" I asked.

"When was the last time you gave Eve one the shots that I left you?" Ms. Terra said.

"It would've been sometime this morning," I replied.

She nodded. "Good, then that means she's due for another one. We might as well go ahead and get that out of the way. Can you bring one of the shots to me?"

I nodded and left the room and headed towards the kitchen. The shots that Ms. Terra gave me had medicine in them that needed to be refrigerated. When I first got them and put them in the fridge I made sure to tell the chef or anyone working in the kitchen that that medicine needed to be refrigerated and don't touch it unless I say they can. So I grabbed one of the shots and placed it on a tray with a first aid kit.

When I got back to the room I handed the shot to Ms. Terra and she gave it to Evelyn on her right shoulder. I winced when I saw that. Even though I've given her the shot plenty of times before it still irks me for some reason. Once the shot was all taken care of, Ms. Terra put a Band-Aid on it and handed me back the tray.

Evelyn seemed to have settled down at this point. I sighed, "I'm going to go change out of my stuffy formal attire. I'll be back later."

"Do you mind waiting a couple of hours before you return? It's been a while since I've been able to hold Eve like this and I'm not sure if I'll be able to do this again for a while," Ms. Terra said.

I shrugged. "Sure, I can wait. Evelyn's not going anywhere so it'll be fine."

"Thanks," Ms. Terra said.

"No problem," I said. I turned around and left the room.

When Evelyn finally woke up she didn't look too good. I assumed that was the side effects of being knocked out for almost a week because of being sick.

She groaned, "Why do I feel like I got wasted at a bar?"

I chuckled, "Maybe it's because you got sick and went into a coma for almost a week?"

Evelyn looked over and saw me. She was startled because she almost fell out of the bed in surprise. I caught her before she could fall off the bed and helped her sit up.

Her face turned red and she looked away. "Uh, thanks."

"No problem," I said. I pulled up a chair and sat by her bedside.

Then out of nowhere she sneezed and out of her nose came a fireball. That's right I shit you not, Evelyn sneezed a fireball out of her nose! I got up and I was going to go get a fire extinguisher when she sneezed again and this time ice came out of her nose.

I heard Ms. Terra say, "Shit Eve! You're awake! Here let me help you!"

"No-" Evelyn started when she sneezed another fireball followed up by a ball of ice. Ms. Terra ran over to Evelyn and pinched her nose.

"Breathe through your mouth," Ms. Terra instructed. Evelyn did as she was told but the moment Ms. Terra let go of her nose, she started sneezing again.

I just stood there watching the scene unfold with a look of awe. Ms. Terra looked at me and sighed, "Look I'm pretty sure you want some sort of explanation for all of this but I can't really say for the moment. At least not until you sign the contract."

I nodded. "I see."

"Contract?" Evelyn said as she started sneezing again. "Don't tell me the Elders are trying to set me up with a man who's engaged! I thought they were itching to make me go back to my training to become a world class Assassin!"

"Well they are wanting you to become an Assassin of course," Ms. Terra said. "They're not going to abandon that idea unless my plan to stop them works. Not to mention Levi's not engaged anymore. He and Ms. Hadder broke their engagement a couple of days ago."

"Levi?" Evelyn asked.

I nodded. "That's my first name and it's a name you will be calling me from now on."

Evelyn paused. "Why?"

I smiled. "Because once we sign the contract, you're mine."
