Chapter 5: Jeremy

{Jeremy}

It's been two years… Two long years since the love of my life left me and it was as if she vanished off the face of the earth. I deserved it though because I didn't divorce my wife before pursuing her. My kid was of that age that even he could understand why I wanted to leave my wife because of how demanding, high maintenance and controlling she was.

I couldn't help it because the first time I saw Eve I thought I was looking at the most drop dead gorgeous woman ever! I wanted to make her mine. Then I saw her get into the fighting ring at the gym and I was worried for her because she was going up against a guy who was three times bigger than her! But I was stunned when I saw her beat the guy without batting an eye. Not to mention she took on three other challengers, men with egos and won.

I think she overdid it though because she barely got to the locker room before she passed out from exhaustion. I took her to the hospital that day to make sure she was okay and she was fine. Once she woke up she was discharged and good as new. I couldn't help but want to chase after her, she was strong, beautiful and everything I wanted in a woman.

So I asked her out on a date and she said yes and we dated for six months. During that time I was drawing up divorce papers and I was getting ready to serve them to my wife when Eve texted me one day to say it was over and she was breaking up with me.

I asked her why and she told me that my wife had contacted her. I asked her to prove it and she sent me pictures of my wife. My jaw dropped when I saw the pictures my wife had sent her because the pictures my wife sent were our wedding pictures! The next set of pictures that my wife sent her was an assortment of baby pictures of my son.

Then I knew what the next question was going to be and Eve asked it. She asked me if I was still married and my wife was a jealous ex. I felt I couldn't lie to her any longer because I had told her that I was single the entire time we were dating and I had another apartment sent up on the other side of town away from the house I owned where my wife and son lived. So I told her the truth and that truth must've crushed her.

As soon as I texted her what was going on she called me and I could tell she was distressed. I remember that conversation like it was yesterday even though it happened two years ago.

"Jeremy?" Eve said with a shaky voice. "Why did you lie to me?"

"I lied because I loved you and I still-" I started.

"No you don't love me!" Eve screamed into my ear. The woman had a set of lungs on her when she was pissed so I had to hold the phone away from my ear a bit. "If you did love me you wouldn't have been married to someone while stringing me along! How could you? I trusted you! I LOVED YOU! I wanted… To be with you for a long time…"

"And we still can! Look I'm going to divorce my wife soon and we'll be together I promise!" I said.

"No, I don't want to be the side chick," Eve said. "I'm done… We're done… Have a nice life Jeremy and don't ever call me again!"

She hung up the phone. It was a good thing that I was already sitting at a bar at the time. I had been excitedly talking about my plans to be with Eve and everything ended just like that.

My friends asked why I was down all of the sudden and when I told them, they felt sorry for me. Just like that my good mood that day had ended with me getting so drunk that I could hardly stand.

It's been two years… Two long years after that conversation happened and ever since then my wife became my ex-wife. She tried to kick me out of the house but was surprised to find that I already had another place set up. She went to court for a custody battle that I won. My now ex-wife is a jealous woman who keeps trying to make sure I don't remarry.

Thankfully I have my son on my side even though I was the one who cheated because he was getting tired of dealing with his mother. Whatever misery my ex-wife is dealing with now she brought it on herself. True, I did cheat and I could've handled dating Eve until after I divorced my wife. But I also found out that my ex-wife was cheating on me long before I cheated on her.

Two years to me now has been long enough and I'm more than determined to track Eve down and make things up to her. If she doesn't accept me I understand but I'm still going to try.

My phone rang and it snapped me out of my thoughts. It was the Private Investigator that I had hired to help me track Eve down.

"So what did you find out?" I asked.

"Are you sitting down?" The P.I asked.

"No, why?" I said.

"You might want to sit down for this one," The P.I said.

I sat down and he took a deep breath and let it out, "Well I was able track Ms. Reid down to her last job she worked and you're not going to believe this but she used to work as a Personal Assistant for Levi Harriman! You know the billionaire who's engaged to be married in a couple of months? Yeah she used to work for him…"

I paused. "What do you mean she used to work for him?"

"I mean she quit working for him a couple of weeks ago and now she works as a security guard now!" The P. I said.

My jaw dropped. I was stunned because Eve worked for Levi Harriman and quit to be a security guard! Like what the hell? Wouldn't want a job working for a billionaire pay well? Who'd want to quit a job like that and to work as a security guard? Seriously?

"Here's the kicker, the job she left paid her a six figure salary! The job she has now working as a security guard pays her half that!" The P.I exclaimed.

"Were you able to figure out why she quit?" I asked.

"No, but I do have the place she's working at now as a security guard," the P. I said. "She's working as a security guard at a shopping mall downtown. A few blocks away from the hospital in another state from us. I can text you the address for it and email the rest of the details but that's about as much as I can do for you. But before I do that I'll be expecting the last payment for my services by the end of the week."

"And you will have it by Friday. Thanks so much for your help!" I said.

"It was a pleasure doing business with you sir!" The P. I said and without another word he hung up.

After the call, excitement ran through me. I was going to try to make it up to Eve once I found her. She was still the love of my life and if I managed to get her back I was never going to let her go.

When Evelyn walked away from the guy she just fought whom I recognized as Mark Stranger, I was seething. I didn't know why I was so angry when she wasn't even mine. Well she wasn't mine yet and I was determined to make her mine at this point.

I was sitting down in the observation room at the gym watching Evelyn fight and I must say she was an awesome fighter! I can see why Mark Stranger was hitting on her after the fight. Although she didn't look too happy when he asked her for her number. She could probably sense that the guy was hitting on her.

I've had girls hit on me while I'm working out at the gym and even though I don't mind the attention because it might lead to a one stand. I didn't understand why she wouldn't take this as an opportunity to date a celebrity or at least hookup with one. That just showed me she had more dignity than that and that made me like her even more.

I heard Rachel chuckling and I looked at her and frowned. "What?"

"I saw that jealous look," Rachel said. "You two aren't even dating yet. Whatever you do, don't start acting possessive, that'll scare her away!"

Ms. Terra chuckled, "Not to mention it's a turn off for Little Eve. It's one of her many pet peeves about men who want to act like Chads. She just wants to be treated as equal and she doesn't need protection. She can protect herself."

"I know she can protect herself, it's just that if and when we get together I tend to be possessive of what's mine," I explained. "I know I sound like a prick saying that but that's how I feel."

Rachel rolled her eyes. "Rich men and their egos…"

"Excuse me?" I said.

"Stop fighting you two!" Ms. Terra said, "Look, Levi I think even if she took his number that she wouldn't date him either. You can blame Jeremy for that. Not to mention she had trust issues before she met Jeremy and after what Jeremy did her trust issues about certain things just got worse. About the only people she really trusts with just about everything are Evan and Daisy. You've met Evan before he's Agent 60 and of course you've met Daisy."

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

"Let me guess, she met Jeremy at a gym didn't she?" I asked.

"Yup," Ms. Terra said while nodding. She paused and then smiled. "I have another way for you two together. I can set up a date for you. But I won't tell her it's a date of course. I can pick a nice place and book a private room for the two of you."

"That sounds like a good idea to me!" I said.

Rachel snorted. "Of course it does!"

Ms. Terra nudged her on the shoulder and gave her a side eye. "Would you be serious about this?" She turned her attention back to me. "Anyway, we'll have to do this on Monday."

I raised an eyebrow. "Why Monday? Today's Friday and isn't she normally off on the weekends?"

Ms. Terra nodded. "Most of the time, yes, but this weekend she's not off work. She has to go for the monthly mandatory two day run. It's to build up an Agent's endurance. They run for two hours straight, take a break for one hour and then they're back at again. They start this evening and return Monday morning. That way they have a chance to rest before they return to whatever assignments they've been doing."

"I see," I said.

"So Monday, I'll set up a date for you two and you do whatever you can to romance her or do what normally you do to pick up girls…" Ms. Terra said.

Rachel covered her mouth and judging by the look on her face she wanted to crack another joke at my expense. But Ms. Terra gave her another sideways look and she calmed down and said nothing.

"Good, Monday at I'll tell my Little Eve that she's going to a nice restaurant to have a little chat with you," Ms. Terra said.

I nodded. "Sounds like a plan to me."

With that we left the gym and parted ways. I went back home to try and plan things so I could get to know Eve better. I knew this was going to be a challenge and I was more than willing to face it head on.

{Eve}

Today is Friday and it's the day of the month that I actually get excited about because of the monthly two day run. There's a total of five separate congregations that make up the organization that I work for and they keep an airtight lid on everything to keep what they're actually doing under wraps. The congregations are: A-Circle, Purple Flowers, The Reds, Crow Birds and Army and each one of them are disguised as a legit business when that's not what they are. There are five different compounds which are areas where Agent's live, one for each congregation and they're pretty big and built underground.

They're big enough to be considered an underground city. The place has everything a person could need living there. It has places to eat, places to shop for regular clothes and gear for whatever assignment or rank you're at, places to go to the movies and even mini theme parks for recreation so the kids don't get bored.

That being said, the congregation I'm from is Purple Flowers. It's the third ranking congregation underneath A- Circle. The leaders of each congregation are called Elders. However, each congregation does have one leader to be the face of the congregation. The face of A-Circle is Lieutenant 32 along with her husband Sergeant 54. The face of Purple Flowers congregation is a young man, the youngest to ever be picked for this type of position and his name is Leader 46, the face of The Reds is a man named is Triple X. The face of the Crow Birds is an old lady and she's going to be turning 80 soon and she's looking to retire and then there's the face of the Army congregation and his name is General Max.

All five congregations are placed over the city spaced out from each other. The two day run is an endurance run and it's also to see how far you go with your abilities. To me, it's fun. To other Agents like my two best friends Daisy and Evan, it's a chore. Agents aren't allowed to bring cellphones or any type of technology with them because if someone gets injured there's always people sent out to find them and bring them back to their compounds.

I had just finished packing the gear that's required of me to take when my phone rang. I picked it up. "Hello?"

"Little Eve! Are you ready for the run this weekend?" Mother Terra asked.

"Yes I am!" I said, "So why are you calling?"

"Mr. Harriman wants you to meet him at a restaurant on Monday evening because he wants to discuss something with you," Mother Terra said.

"Like?" I asked.

"Probably something business related or whatnot," Mother Terra said. "Either way you'll meet him at the seafood restaurant next to his office building. You'll meet him there at 8pm on Monday and I'll text you the address and leave a message to remind you."

I paused. "Okay, permission to speak freely ma'am?"

"No, this is an order Agent," Mother Terra said. "Monday 8pm, that is all."

After that she hung up the phone. I was baffled by the sudden order to meet Mr. Harriman at a seafood restaurant and why Mother Terra seemed annoyed that I tried to question her. I realized there was nothing that I could do about it so I pushed the feelings aside and turned off my phone to put it somewhere safe. After I made sure that my apartment was locked up and had everything I needed I went to the checkpoint to catch the bus that would take me along with other Agents to the starting point of the run.

When I got to the first checkpoint of the run I met up with Daisy and Evan and somehow, Daisy was unusually excited.

"I can't wait to start the run this weekend!" Daisy said. She practically bounced up and down on her feet with excitement.

I blinked. "Okay who are you and what have you done with Daisy?"

Daisy laughed, "It's still me! I'm excited because I just developed a new ability!"

Evan groaned, "Ugh I hate when Agents develop new abilities on this run. They get too excited and when the excitement wears off, they move onto the next thing!"

Daisy frowned. "You're just mad because you haven't developed any new abilities! I mean weren't you excited when you developed all eighteen of your abilities? I'm sure you felt that way when you developed a new ability?"

"Yeah I was excited at one point and honestly, I prefer not to develop any more abilities," said Evan.

"ATTEEENTION!" We heard someone yell and it was one of the deputies in charge of the run. Every Agent lined up waiting instructions on what to do next.

"Alright, as usual every Agent is lined up in different sections according to their abilities!" The deputy yelled. He smiled. "Let me introduce myself, my name is Deputy 667 and I will be in charge of overseeing this run along with Deputy 100 and Deputy 112."

Right when he said that two deputies, one male and one female appeared with two baskets in their hands full of dodgeballs. The female deputy stepped forward, "My name is Deputy 112! For the run this month we're going to do something a little bit different. For the first six hours of the run we'll run like we normally do, no abilities allowed just straight up running. After that we'll add in these dodgeballs and once that happens it's a free for all. You can use whatever abilities you have on these dodgeballs to get them into the different goals that we have set up along the route we're taking.

"Once you get the ball into the goal that goal will disappear. Don't worry there's plenty of these balls to go around as I'm sure that the Agents who have developed new abilities want to try them out."

Deputy 667 smiled and nodded. "Alright that's just about everything for now. Agents, are you ready?!"

Everyone cheered, "Sir, yes sir!"

"I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" Deputy 667 yelled.

The crowd roared, "SIR, YES SIR!"

"THEN LET'S MOVE OUT!" That was the thing the Deputy said before we started to run.

***

The first six hours of the run wasn't that eventful. We ran for two hours, took a break for an hour and started running again. However, we reached the first checkpoint where we were to rest for the night before the dodgeballs would come out. So after we rested for the night the dodgeballs came out as soon as we started running again and that's when total chaos erupted. This is my favorite part of the run.

I don't know who it was that took the first kick at a dodgeball but it looked like a small tornado sent the dodgeball sailing from behind me. I caught it after I canceled out the tornado with my wind ability. Agents were going everywhere attacking each other testing out their abilities and going at it with the dodgeballs.

At every turn we would hear a chant that the deputies in charge would say before instructing us which way to go. "I'm not afraid to die by a bullet. I'm not afraid to die by a knife. I live my life the way I'm told to because I don't want to bring my family grief and strife."

Everything was fine and on Sunday a lot of Agents on the run decided to stop using their abilities and just ran like normal. We returned to where we started the run at the first checkpoint Monday morning and that was the end of the run.

I paced back and forth at the restaurant in the private room that I was in. I knew this wasn't a date but I was still nervous as if it was a date. I had to remind myself that I had Ms. Terra set up this meeting under the guise of a "business meeting." Yeah no, and by the way I was pacing one would think I was getting ready to propose marriage or something like that.

Rachel decided it would be a good idea to tag along on this meeting even though I told her that she didn't have to. She was already seated and looked at me and rolled her eyes. "Levi, calm down and sit down! Evelyn will be here any minute now. Don't worry, I'll help pick up the slack if you find you can't think of anything to say."

I rolled my eyes and said with sarcasm, "Gee thanks, I really appreciate it!"

She smirked. "You're welcome!"

Finally Evelyn showed up and she took my breath away because she was drop dead gorgeous! She wore a light brown dress that went down slightly below her knees and her hair was down in curls. She had hardly any makeup on which was fine because I didn't think she needed any. She went for the natural look with just light lip gloss and was pretty much it. She wore wedge heels that complimented her short height. Although she was of average height 5 foot 5 those shoes still worked for her.

She stood in the doorway of the private room giving us a confused look. "What? Is something wrong?"

Rachel was the first to speak, "Oh no my dear you did nothing wrong! You're just so beautiful!"

Rachel got up from her seat and hugged Evelyn. She led her to her seat at the table and I got up and pulled her chair out for her. Once everyone was situated I said, "So I bet you're wondering why you're here, am I right?"

Evelyn nodded. "Yes."

I surprised myself when I was able to come up with a lie right on the spot, "Well Rachel and I wanted to get to know more about you. You're the second Agent in charge of our security detail and you used to work for me as my personal assistant."

"Oh, I see," Evelyn said. Before she could say anything else there was a knock on the door.

I looked up to see a waitress standing there with a nervous look on her face. I raised an eyebrow. "Yes? What is it?"

"Um, is there an Evelyn Reid here?" The waitress asked.

"That's me," said Evelyn. "What's up?"

"There's someone outside who wants to speak to you," The waitress said.

Evelyn tilted her head. "Oh? Did they say who they were?"

The waitress shook her head. "No, but they're insistent on seeing you."

Evelyn looked. "Do you mind if I excuse myself? I'll be right back."

I nodded. "Sure."

After Evelyn left and before the waitress could leave I instructed the waitress to leave the door open. Once the waitress left I heard Evelyn's voice yell, "Jeremy? What the hell are you doing here?"
