Chapter 15: It comes with the Territory

{Levi}

I couldn't help but pace back and forth in Eve's room while I was waiting for her to come back from her test.

"Stop pacing, she'll be fine," Dad said. Even though he was trying to act though along with my Mom I knew he was scared.

"Easy for you to say," I said. "I just married her and now this happens! I'm supposed to protect her and she wound up protecting me. If only I was more trained to handle these situations."

"Now stop right there," Mom said. "Eve is a soldier and she still is! From what I've seen of this place where she grew up she was raised to do what she does now. It's like how we raised you to help take over your father's company when you became of age. For you, knowing numbers and making contracts is second nature for you. You eat, sleep and breathe the job. If Eve found out that you lost an important contract do you think she'd blame herself for not doing your job?"

I shook my head. "No, she wouldn't." I paused and then smiled. "Okay I get it. It's still unnerving that she faces this every time she goes out on a mission. I have no idea what was going through her head when she got shot."

"Wait, that's what happened? Eve got shot?" Mom gasped. "I mean I knew something horrible happened when I saw her on that stretcher."

I also have no idea why Eve thought it was funny that she was brought back from the dead, but I chose not to say anything about that. Mostly because Mom and Dad are freaked out about this already. I don't blame them because I was shaken to my very core about what happened.

I remembered that Eve told me that at least with being an Agent she gets a break in between missions. If she were an Assassin she'd have to kill someone every week! Breaks from the job would be few and far between. Although I have a feeling that once the Elder's find out about Eve's Demon Power her life is going to turn into something worse than Hell on Earth. That thought alone scares me.

After what felt like forever, Eve was wheeled back into the room and she was sweating and shaking and she let out a howl of pain.

I rushed to her side. "Eve, baby? I'm here."

"She's going to be okay. She's just in shock right now," I heard someone say. I looked up to the nurse from earlier, giving me a sympathetic look. I gaped at her because even though she was looking at me in sympathy she said Eve's just in shock so casually.

But then again, I composed myself because I had to remind myself that Eve wasn't a normal human. So stuff like this probably happened on a daily basis here.

The nurse sighed, "If you're uncomfortable staying here you can go wait out in the waiting room and come back in five minutes. She should be calmed down by then."

I shook my head. "No, I'm staying here. Eve needs me so I'm staying here."

She shrugged, "Alright then." She looked over at Mom, Dad and George. "The same thing goes for you guys. If you're uncomfortable here you can wait out in the waiting room."

Mom shook her head. "I'm not going anywhere!"

Dad and George nodded in agreement. The nurse looked puzzled. "Huh, interesting… Usually when this happens half or more than half of the visitors leave the room and run for the hills! You guys must have nerves of steel or something."

Dad snorted. "Well you don't get to be a ruthless business tycoon by running away from scary situations."

The nurse shrugged. "Alright then. I'll be back in ten minutes to check on Mrs. Harriman, she should be fine by then."

When she left the room George asked me, "Again, what the hell happened to Eve?"

I hesitated. George narrowed his eyes. "Let me guess, you can't tell me because it's classified information?"

I nodded. "Exactly."

"Levi?" Eve groaned.

I looked over to see that she was awake and trying to sit up. She smiled when she realized that she wasn't tied to the bed anymore and could move her arms freely. I went to her to help her sit up. She rubbed wrists and her smile turned into a grin. "Ahh I'm never taking the ability to move my hands freely for granted again!"

I gave a sarcastic snort. "Says the one who jokes about getting CPR after being brought back from the dead."

"What? You do realize that every other time I get sent out on a mission that I face the possibility of facing the end of the barrel of a gun. Or several guns," Eve said. She rolled her eyes. "This isn't the first time I've been shot either."

"You what!?" Mom gasped.

Eve shrugged. "I'm a soldier, do you expect me to fight and not get hurt? It comes with the territory."

"Yup, you're not a real Agent unless you get shot at least once!" I heard Daisy say in a sing-song voice.

I frowned when I saw her. She rolled her eyes and sat the basket of fruit that she had with her and sat down on the table next to Eve's bed. "Eve tends to be a little reckless when it comes down to the job. But yeah it is a right of passage to be considered a real Agent to get shot at least once. And let me tell you, getting shot isn't fun." She looked at Eve and grinned. "Six bullets! I'd say that's a new record!" She added with sarcasm, "And you stopped breathing for a few seconds! Nice."

"Daisy!" Eve snapped. "Would yeah stop scarring the In-Laws? That's not helping!"

Daisy gave Eve a pointed look. "What? You started it."

"And I'm finishing it, now change the topic or leave," Eve said.

"Touchy," Daisy said. "Okay fine, I'll come back later."

Daisy left and I looked at Eve. “Are you okay?”

“I’m feeling better at the moment compared to the mind numbing pain I was in earlier,” Eve said.

George shook his head in dismay. “You really are something, you know that?”

Eve snorted. “Thanks for the compliment.”

No sooner had Eve said that there was a knock on the door. I looked up to see Eve’s Uncle, Trainer Michael standing in the doorway. Eve hissed, “Oh hello Satan! Why don’t you go back to Hell where you belong?”

Trainer Michael chuckled, “It’s nice to see that you’re still alive Eve! And please for the last time call me Uncle!”

“Well excuse me for not being very ladylike because I’m saying this in front of the In-laws but fuck off and go back to Hell where you belong! And no, just because we share the same blood doesn’t mean you’re my Uncle. Reserve those titles for my real family!” Eve snapped.

“Eve!” Mom gasped. “Looks like when you get home I’m going to have to teach you some manners.”

Trainer Michael scoffed, “Good luck on that.” He turned his attention to Eve. “I’ve told the Elder’s about what’s going on with you Eve. Which means soon I'll be training you for the job you should’ve had to begin with my little Prodigy. Even if you don’t take the job you’ll still need some special training.”

Eve looked like she’d seen a ghost. Her face looked like the color had drained from her face and I knew what Trainer Michael was talking about. He was talking about teaching her to figure out how to control her Demon Power. The sinister smirk on his face told me he was enjoying freaking Eve out.

Asshole! I thought.

Trainer Michael snickered. “Now don’t be like that Mr. Harriman. You need to get past the fact that Eve here isn’t a normal human and she never will be. So if something is said or done that you don’t like, just be mindful of how different our lives are compared to yours.”

Trainer Michael left the room.

Dad frowned. “Okay I don’t like that guy either. I think I’ll have to have a word with him.”

“He’s right though,” Eve said.

“Yeah but just because our lives are different doesn’t mean you have to be treated this way-“ Mom started.

“Actually it does,” Eve said, stopping Mom from going into a rant. “If you think that’s bad then you don’t know the half of it. From where I’m standing it’s best you guys are left in the dark about things. If someone jokes about getting shot or hurt in some type of way like it’s no big deal because it isn’t. What seems traumatic to you isn’t to us. That’s because things like that happen on a regular basis.”

Eve looked down and said, “That’s just the way things are for us.”

Dad sighed and shook his head. “It still just doesn’t seem right.”

Eve clenched her jaw but she didn’t say anything. I could tell she wanted to say something just like the look on her face. She kept her composure the best she could.

“I think I’m going to have to have a word with your Uncle, Eve,” Dad said. Before Eve could respond Dad quickly left the room.

When I left Eve’s hospital room I was on a mission to find her Uncle and have a strong word with him. I didn’t have to search long because as soon as I walked down the hallway I heard Trainer Michael give me a wicked laugh, “Looking for me?”

I turned around and saw him smirking at me. I raised an eyebrow. “What’s so funny?”

“Oh nothing I just think it’s funny that even though people don’t like me they have this compulsive need to confront me and ‘save my soul’ so to speak,” Trainer Michael said. “I don’t need to be saved, you want to know why?”

“Why?” I asked.

“Because I’m good at what I do,” He responded. “Part of Eve’s job as well as mine is to kill people. And to be able to kill a person without an ounce of guilt or remorse. The perfect soldier. That’s what Eve needs to be. She was born with the ability to kill. Not many Agents can say that but she can. It takes over a decade to become the perfect soldier.

“Eve was born a perfect soldier already. True, she was mad at me when she got her first kill at the age of seven but to be honest I don’t think she was upset about killing someone oh no. I think she was upset about how she was trained.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Why are you telling me this?”

“Because you’re a reasonable man. I can see where your son gets his righteous sense of justice from,” He laughed, “There’s a term around here that goes ‘speak of the devil and he will appear.’ Yeah that saying is a reference to me. I’m also referred to as ‘Handsome Satan.’”

It was at that moment that I knew even though I wasn’t the one married to Eve my life was about to get a little bit crazier than it already is. But I don’t mind a challenge and I’m going to be by my son and daughter in-law’s side no matter what happens. I’m pretty sure that my wife feels the same way.

Two teenage girls walked by gawking at Trainer Michael and giggling. Trainer Michael groaned when he saw that. "Cadet Tracy and Cadet Mary don't you two have better things to do then gawk at a couple of married men?"

"What? I can't help that you guys are handsome!" Cadet Tracy said.

Trainer Michael gave Cadet Tracy a sideways look and hissed, "You aren't even of age yet to even be qualified on learning how to flirt with people! And you'd better have your virginity intact when you turn eighteen because you don't want to find out what happens to Cadet's who don't follow the rules."

Cadet Tracy's eyes went wide and she shook her head. "I'm sorry Trainer Michael-"

Trainer Michael cut her off, "I'm feeling like being nice so I won't report this to your Drill Sergeant what's his name again?"

Cadet Tracy gulped, "His name is Drill Sergeant Andrew ID number 1236 sir."

"I'll keep that in mind the next time you start gawking at me because we both know this isn't the first time this has happened," Trainer Michael said.

Cadet Mary grabbed Cadet Tracy's and started to drag her away from us. "Come on Cadet Tracy we don't want to get into any trouble. Let's get back to our posts before the Drill Sergeant finds out we're not there."

"But-" Cadet Tracy said.

"No buts! Let's go!" Cadet Mary said.

As Cadet Tracy and Cadet Mary walked as fast as they could away from us. Trainer Michael watched them with an amused look.

I raised an eyebrow. "I think that was a bit harsh."

He rolled his eyes. "Of course you would think that, you're an outsider. We have rules here and they might seem rather strict to you because you don't live here. This isn't the world that you came from. Just like if I were to step into your world I'm pretty sure you guys do things that I wouldn't agree with. And if I didn't agree with them I wouldn't say anything. Because it wouldn't be my place to."

I paused. "I see. How did you train Eve?"

Trainer Michael smiled. "Now that is a story for another day. I know you hate me because of how Eve sees me. And I know judging by that look on your face you're going to want to save Eve from me." He scoffed, "Good luck with that because I feel I'll be training her again to become the perfect soldier very soon! Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to work."

Trainer Michael turned on his heels and left. When he left the conversation made me curious. I knew I would have to tread lightly as I set out to find out more about Eve. She is my daughter In-law now and she is a mystery. Although I have a feeling that my son knows more about this than I do.

After my wife and I left the hospital and went back to our hotel rooms outside of the compound I talked to her about what Trainer Michael said. My wife is just as curious as I am about our new daughter In-law. Since I have money and influence I'm pretty sure I can find out exactly what I need to know.
