{Eve}
The next time I opened my eyes, I immediately shut them because I had a blinding headache. The place I was in smelled like it was cleaned with Chlorine and hydrogen peroxide products and the slow beeping of whatever machines I was hooked up to told me that I was in a hospital room of sorts.
"It's about time you woke up!" I heard Levi say.
I opened my eyes again to see Levi sitting next to my bedside with a worried look on his face and rightfully so. I'd be worried about Levi if he were in my shoes.
"Hi Levi," I said. I tried to sit up and that's when I found out that I was tied to the bed. "Why am I tied down?"
Levi sighed, "What do you remember before you passed out?"
"I remember the medic crew coming to try and calm me down after my Demon Power kicked in and then I passed out after I was injected with something," I said.
"Yeah that's why you're tied down. Your Demon Power went out of control at the end of the test. You've been sedated for three days now. I was beginning to wonder if you'd ever wake up. But the doctors decided to at least keep you tied up with silver chains while you slept just in case," Levi explained.
"Oh," I said. "Can I get some water?"
He nodded and poured me a glass of water from the pitcher that was sitting on the table next to me. He had to help me drink it because I was tied down.
"Thanks," I said.
"You don't have to thank me. I'm your husband and I'm going to stay by your side as long as I can," Levi said.
"Okay," I said. "So how did I do on the test? Did I pass?"
Levi had a somber look on his face when he said, "Yeah you passed."
When I heard that I had some mixed feelings about it. On one hand I was glad I passed the test and all of that training paid off but on the other hand that meant that I would become an Assassin and I would be killing people every time I get sent out on a job. Of course I've killed dozens of people already but at least when I was just a regular Agent I'd get break from that and do another job besides killing people.
They'd send me to do recon sometimes and rescue hostages. But now… Now I'll just be killing people 24/7 almost. I know it's going to depend on the target.
I saw Levi snap his fingers in front of my face to get my attention. "Huh?"
"Are you okay? How do you feel about passing the test?" Levi asked.
"I'm having some mixed feelings about it," I answered. "On one hand I'm glad I passed but on the other hand that means I'll be killing someone for every mission. At least when I was a regular Agent I'd get a break from doing that and be sent to do something like recon instead."
Levi took my hand in his and gave it a small squeeze. "You know I'm going to be here for you right? Don't be afraid to tell me that you need to cry on my shoulder. That's what a caring spouse does. And if you need sex just to chill out well…"
I felt my face turn red at that last comment. Levi laughed, "I like it when you blush like that."
A nurse entered the room. "Oh good, you're awake. I'll get your vitals and let the doctor know that you're awake."
The nurse did what she said she was going to do. Shortly after the nurse left the doctor came in. "Okay Agent 36 how are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling just fine and I'd feel even better if I were untied," I said.
The doctor paused when he saw Levi. "He's an outsider?"
I nodded. "Yes."
"Well then-" the doctor started.
I cut him off, "Don't worry, he already knows."
"Oh, okay then well that makes things much easier," the doctor said. "Your Demon Power went out of control at the end of the test and you almost leveled the building. So I'd rather be safe than sorry. However, until we're sure that your powers are under control we can at least loosen the chains so you can go to the bathroom on your own and whatnot. But I can't untie you completely until the Elders give the all clear. And I have no idea how long that will take."
I groaned. "Lovely."
The doctor took my vitals and loosened the chains on my wrists and sat up. When I sat up I felt a little bit dizzy so I closed my eyes.
"Okay I'll get you something for the dizziness and you need to eat something," the doctor said.
After a week of recovery the Elders gave the okay for me to go home.

{Ms. Terra}
I failed her! Those goddamn Elders! Especially Elder Lewis! I thought.
"Okay dear, what's going on?" Rachel asked.
I looked up from my drink and frowned. "What do you mean?"
"You've been moping around for the past week and the moment I get you out of the house and to our favorite spot you're trying to drink yourself under the table," Rachel said.
Rachel and I were at our favorite bar in town and it just so happened to be a gay bar. I was probably on my second margarita and I wasn't feeling the least bit tipsy. That's the perks of becoming an Agent with mutant powers.
Rachel grabbed my drink and placed it on the counter. "I think you've had enough to drink."
"What? I'm not even tipsy yet!" I whined.
"That's enough, besides don't you have to work tomorrow?" Rachel asked. She grabbed my hand. "Come on, let's go dance for a little bit and then go home."
Once we got home Rachel somehow managed to lift me up in her arms and carry me inside the house.
"I can walk on my own you know!" I protested.
"Nope," Rachel said. She sat me down on the bed and took my shoes off. She went over to the dresser and chose a pair of pajamas and helped me get changed in them.
When we both got settled in for the night Rachel pulled me closer to her. "Now, tell me what's wrong."
I sighed, "I failed her."
"Failed who?" Rachel asked.
"My daughter," I said.
"You mean Eve?" Rachel said.
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
I nodded. "The only daughter I have. First I can't tell her that I'm still alive and now this. She got the one job that I tried so hard to protect her from."
Rachel raised an eyebrow. "And that job would be?"
I sighed, "Remember when I told you about the Elders wanting Eve to be an Assassin and not just a regular Agent?"
Her eyes went wide. "You mean she's going to-"
I nodded slowly. "Uh-hmm, and what's worse I won't be her boss anymore! So I won't be able to keep track of how she's doing. And who knows what jobs Elder Lewis will send her on."
Rachel held onto me tighter. "Honestly, you didn't fail her. You did everything you could to protect her. You're a good mother even though you can't tell her that you're still alive. It's not your fault that you can't tell her. Eve's an adult and I have no doubt that she can handle herself. I just can't believe that there are organizations like this that it's perfectly okay to test on humans like they're lab rats."
"Yeah but there's nothing that can be done about it," I said. "It's considered government work as soldiers and if you try to dig anything up, you won't find anything about it. You will only find what the government wants you to find. Half of that stuff in Eve's background isn't true. Yes, she's a soldier just like I am. The truth is she didn't start serving as a soldier when she was eighteen like her background says."
I rolled over to face her and she raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean by that?"
"Eve was raised to do her job. She was seven years old when she started serving as a soldier… Elder Lewis had been gunning for her to become an Assassin ever since she was born. But I managed to go before the council and have him delayed on that," I explained.
Rachel's jaw dropped which understandable. I'd be shocked too if I was told this type of information. "A child soldier? The government is testing on children?"
"Yup," I said. "What makes things even worse in Eve's case is that she's a prodigy. A genius soldier so to speak. Not to mention if you tell anyone about this there's no proof. So people will think you're crazy. The only reason I'm telling you this is because I feel like I can trust you and we're together."
"Does Levi know about this?" Rachel asked.
I nodded. "Yeah, he knows."
"I see," Rachel said. "Well that makes sense because Eve is his wife and all. So of course he has to know. Damn, poor Eve."
I sighed, "I know."

{Rachel}
I watched as my girlfriend slept. Every once a while she would cry in her sleep and it was heartbreaking because I knew what she was crying about. On the other hand, I couldn't sleep at all. I tossed and turned and when it came to be 5am I admitted defeat and got out of bed.
I had a feeling that Levi knew about Eve's past. So I called him while I was having my morning coffee hoping that I didn't wake him. He picked up on the first ring. "Hello?"
"Levi, hey I need to talk to you. It's about Eve," I said.
"Oh?" Levi asked. "What about her?"
"Listen, I know you know about her backstory," I said. "Her real backstory. Not the one government wants you to know about. Can you come over to my office so we can talk?"
Levi groaned, "Let me guess Ms. Terra finally told you? I thought she might've told you before me. But yeah I can come in around lunchtime. I have a couple of important meetings to go to this morning."
I nodded. "Alright then. I'll see you later."
When Levi and I were still engaged Levi gave me one of his companies to run as a wedding gift. Even though we broke off the engagement he told me the company was still mine. However, Levi's company is still the parent company to mine. My company mostly deals with fashion so I named it: Rachel's Fashion House. I know the name's not very original but I love it because the company is mine.
Lunchtime rolled around and Levi came into the office and he brought lunch with him.
As soon as he sat down he sighed, "So what is it that you want to know about Eve?"
"Do you know that Eve was actually a child soldier?" I said.
Levi nodded. "Yup. Actually, she was born into it."
I paused. "Huh? How are you born into the military? That doesn't make sense."
Levi looked up at the nearby clock. "How much time do you have for lunch? Cause this is a long story."
"I think I could take an hour or two. I don't have any important appointments that I'm aware of at the moment," I said.
"Okay then, here goes," Levi said.
Levi wasn't kidding when he said that it was a long story. He told me about the things that he saw at the compound before the wedding. The orphanage that Eve lived at looked like a military boot camp. At the age of seven she was told that her father ran away from his post and her mother died in action. That was when she was being pushed into special training and kept away from the other kids. That year was also when she had her first kill.
As I listened to her tragic backstory I couldn't take it anymore so I asked Levi to stop talking about it. Levi did warn me that Eve doesn't like to be pitied. I don't pity her. If anything I have more respect for her.
Just as Levi was getting ready to leave I got a call from my secretary.
"Yes? What is it?" I asked.
"There's a man out here who says he has something very important to talk to you about. He says his name is Elder Lewis?" My secretary responded.
Since I had her on speakerphone Levi spun around and narrowed his eyes. "Elder Lewis? What the fuck would that bastard want now?"
I shrugged. "Don't know. Why don't we let him in and find out?"
Levi nodded and sat back down. Elder Lewis entered the room dressed in his military outfit.
He smirked when he saw Levi. "Well now, it seems that I got to kill two birds with one stone today! I was going to stop by Mr. Harriman's office tomorrow anyway. This makes things so much easier."
"Please have a seat," I said.
I could tell by the look of Levi's face that he wanted to beat the crap out of Elder Lewis. I gave Levi a warning look because I didn't want to have a fight break out in my office.
Elder Lewis closed the door and took a seat across from my desk. He gave me a smug look. "Mr. Harriman, Ms. Hadder I'm sure you two are well aware of Prodigy Eveyln's new job assignment?"
"Yeah," Levi said with a somber look. "She's an Assassin now."
"Good," Elder Lewis said. "Honestly, you should be proud instead of sulking. What? Does it bruise your ego that your wife is stronger than you are?"
"Excuse me?" Levi growled. "That has nothing to do with it! Eve is a human being not some freaking toy for the military to play with! Your little cult thing you have going on is sick and fucked up! Having her kill people everyday that's going to take a toll on her you know."
"Awe, isn't that cute! Prodigy Evelyn, has a kind caring husband. You don't know the first thing about what's actually going on! See here's the thing you're looking at this from the wrong. There's a big picture here and you're missing the point," Elder Lewis said.
"And what point am I missing?" Levi asked.
"You know the USA has one of the most powerful armies ever! Just think of what the USA could do with an army of super soldiers at its disposal hm? Now you've seen what the Cornwall Security Agents are capable of and that's because they're all Agents from the same program Prodigy Evelyn is from," Elder Lewis explained. "I could have my Agents in the Police Force and there would be nothing that arrogant rich people like yourselves can do about it.
"You see that would mean that rich people would finally stop being above the law and start spending time in jail just like poor people do."
"You're crazy!" Levi snarled.
Elder Lewis cocked his head to the side and taunted. "Am I? Because it's not just me that runs things. It's a whole entire organization made up of five different congregations. You won't be able to get rid of us no matter how hard you try."
He turned his attention to me. "And you, well you'll be able to have a happy ending or a bittersweet happy ending with your girlfriend finally."
I narrowed my eyes. "What do you mean by that?"
"Well, Mother Terra is going to have to retire very soon. Like she only has a few more years left on her job. She's forty-eight years old now and every Agent, especially those that have leadership positions, retire at the age of fifty. Since she's dating an outsider she'll be able to live outside of the compound. Of course if she decided to stay she'd be well taken care of.
"She'll be retired and won't have to worry about going out on any type of missions whatsoever. She'll still have her memories and stuff. We don't wipe them because there might be a chance (let's say if we go to war for whatever the reason) that she might be called upon to come out of retirement.
"As far as Eve goes… She'll be doing what she was raised to do," Elder Lewis explained.
At that moment, I wanted to kill Elder Lewis as much as Levi did. But I knew even in a two against one fight, going up against this guy would mean that we had a death wish. I'm too young to die. I'm only thirty-nine years old and I still have my whole life ahead of me.
Elder Lewis chuckled, "Judging by the looks on your faces I'd say that I've overstayed my welcome."
You overstayed your welcome the moment you stepped into the office! I thought.
He stood up and when finally left the room Levi looked pissed and I don't blame him either.
I sighed, "It's a good thing you didn't try to fight the guy. I don't know about you but I don't have a death wish."
"I wish I was strong enough to take on a guy like that. But I'm not, so you're right. Fighting him won't help any of us in this situation." He stood up and turned to leave.
"Where are you going?" I asked.
"Home," Levi replied. "I don't know about you but I don't think that I can work for the rest of the day."
I nodded and Levi left the room. I decided to do the same thing. I knew I wasn't going to be able to work not after a visit from Elder Lewis.
