She's alive, she's alive, she's alive! I thought as I speed walked down the hallway of the hospital towards Eve's room. I stopped short when I saw Eve lying on the hospital bed with tubes hooked up to her and she was in a full body cast.
"Well at least she's alive," I said to myself.
I took a deep breath and let it out. When I went up to the doctor, Elder Lewis was standing next to him. "What's going on with Eve? What's happening to my wife?"
"Well she's not completely out of the woods yet. Her bones had already started healing when she was found. So we had to reset the bones so they would heal properly. She'll be in a coma for a few weeks just until-" The doctor said.
"I can take it from here doctor," Elder Lewis said. He looked at me. "Follow me."
I followed Elder Lewis down the hallway to an office. He closed the door and motioned for me to sit down.
"Agents tend to heal faster than a normal human does. Honestly, I'm not surprised that she lived. I knew she was going to right from the very start," Elder Lewis said.
I rolled my eyes. "That's exactly what everyone else told me. That Eve was going to come home alive and not in a body bag. That didn't really comfort me as much."
Elder Lewis laughed, "Yeah that makes sense. A lot of outsiders tend to feel that way when their spouse is on a dangerous mission. Anyway, what I'm about to ask of you will be the most important decision of your life. It might make or break your relationship with Eve."
I raised an eyebrow. "Okay?"
"What we want from you is to get Eve pregnant," Elder Lewis said.
My jaw dropped. "Now? You want me to get Eve pregnant now?"
He shook his head. "Now right away. At least wait until she's healed. And that will happen faster than you think. If you don't want to do it, you have a choice."
"What choice might that be?" I asked.
"You can choose to walk away from her and divorce her or you can donate your sperm and when the time comes we'll artificially get her pregnant. The choice is yours," Elder Lewis said.
I didn't have to think twice because I wasn't going to leave Eve. I had already decided from the moment that I married her that I wasn't going to leave her or betray her no matter what.
I shook my head. "No, I'm not leaving Eve! She's mine no matter what."
Elder Lewis snickered. "Wow, not only are you the faithful husband, you're a possessive one too. Prodigy Evelyn got lucky when she married you."
"Could you please stop calling her that? That's annoying," I growled.
He snorted. "Would you prefer that I called her Agent 36 instead?"
I groaned. "Never mind."
There was a knock on the door.
"Come in!" Elder Lewis called out.
The door opened and there was an older man who looked like an older version of Elder Lewis walked in dressed in the same uniform that Elder Lewis was dressed in.
"Elder Williams!" Elder Lewis gasped as he stood up.
"At ease soldier," Elder Williams said.
Elder Lewis sat back down and Elder Williams sat down next to me. "Going to assume that Elder Lewis has told you what we're asking of you?"
I nodded. "You guys want me to get Eve pregnant. Question, does Eve get a say in this? And why do you want children from her now when you didn't want children from her before?"
Elder Williams nodded. "Good questions. For the answer to your first question is no, Prodigy Evelyn doesn't get a say in this. And the answer to your second question is when an Agent gets to a certain age that is when we look at their progress as to how well they're doing their job. Since Prodigy Evelyn has saved the world I think it's time she has children. We need children especially from the very best of Agents to track the progress of a congregation."
I shook my head in dismay at this but I had already made up my mind. I was going to be with Eve and I was going to help her carry out this task. "Eve is not going to be happy when she wakes up and finds this out. When exactly am I going to need to donate my sperm for this?"
"Right before Prodigy Evelyn wakes up," Elder Williams said. "And don't worry, male Agents get the same treatment. Yes, while it's true that we allow same sex couples, male or female they will eventually be ordered to give us children."
"Well that's nice to know," I said with sarcasm.
Elder Williams smiled. "Yeah I remembered when it was my time to give children and I did it willingly. If an Agent is unwilling, well we have ways to make them comply."
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
"Oh," I said.
"At least one of my children excelled in their job while the other two… Not so much," Elder Williams.
He looked at Elder Lewis like a father would look at their son and it made me wonder if Elder Williams was Elder Lewis's father. It would make sense if he was because Elder Williams looked like an older version of Elder Lewis.
"Can I go sit with Eve now?" I asked.
Elder Williams chuckled. "Sure, you can go now."

THREE MONTHS LATER…
Two weeks before Eve woke up I donated my sperm to get her pregnant and it worked. Eve and I had discussions about wanting kids but Eve felt that it wasn't the right time for them. Apparently Eve's Bosses felt the same way because they were giving her birth control shots until they were certain it was the right time for her to have a child.
By the time Eve woke up she was out of the full body cast and she just had a feeding tube and a catheter and regular IV in her for fluids. She opened her eyes slowly and groaned. "Ugh, where am I?"
"Eve? I'm here Eve. And you're at the hospital," I said. "You've been asleep for three months."
She blinked. "Oh."
"How are you feeling? Are you in shock, or…" I said.
"Hmm, I feel like I fell through a meteorite into the Pacific Ocean," Eve said.
My jaw dropped. "What! No wonder why people are saying it's a miracle that you lived!"
"Don't forget that I had help you know," Eve said. "Jesse was with me."
"Oh… Yeah I forgot Izzy told me about that," I said.
"Um, I'm thirsty, can I get some water?" Eve asked.
I nodded and got her a glass of water. She took it and downed the whole thing in one go.
"Wow, you weren't kidding about being thirsty," I said.
She was getting ready to say something when the doctor came in.
"Alright Agent 36, it's good to see that you're awake finally!" The doctor said.
Eve's stomach growled. "Um, how soon will I be able to eat?"
The doctor chuckled. "After we take out your feeding tube. But only soft foods first and then solid foods later when the baby starts growing more."
She paused. "I'm sorry? Did you just say baby?"
The doctor nodded. "Yup. The baby. Isn't it wonderful? You'll get time off work until the child is three years old! Alright let me get vitals and I'll get a nurse to come and take your feeding tube out and bring you a meal."
Once the doctor finished what they said they were going to do they left.
When the doctor left Eve scoffed, "Figures the Elders would do that. I just finished saving the world three months ago and now they want children from me." She looked at me. "They didn't have you do it naturally did they?"
I shook my head. "No, I donated my sperm and they did it the artificial way considering you were still asleep."
"Wow. It's good to know at least they have heart when it comes down to stuff like that," Eve said with sarcasm. "They could've at least waited until I could do the action naturally. Although that probably would've taken months to be cleared for that type of activity. The Elders can be so impatient sometimes."
I rolled my eyes. "You can say that again."
A nurse came in and took out Eve's feeding tube and told her she'd be right back with her food. She came back with a tray of food in her hands and Eve took it. It looked somewhat appetizing. It was mostly just chicken broth, Jell-O and applesauce.
Once she ate everything on the tray she grabbed the nearest trashcan and threw up in it.
That had me worried. I frowned. "I hope you'll be able to keep your food down. You need to eat a lot of calories for you and the baby."
"I'm just starting off on this," Eve growled. "So how long have I been pregnant?"
"Two weeks," I answered.
"Oh," Eve said.
At this point in the conversation, I felt really concerned that Eve wasn't freaking out about this. As a matter of fact, she didn't even seem fazed by this at all.
"Um, Eve are you okay?" I asked.
She shrugged. "I'm fine. I'm glad you chose to stay. Sometimes outsiders choose to walk away. And when that happens they're seen as traitors and even if the spouse changes their mind they're never let back in ever again. As matter of fact, if you had walked away I would've been forbidden to see you ever again."
"I made up my mind from the moment I proposed to you. I wasn't going to leave you no matter what. And I know Agents have a tendency to be loyal. It's like loyalty is in their blood or something. And even if you did cheat on me I would stay with you. You were mine from the very moment I laid eyes on you," I said.
She looked into my eyes and shed a tear. "Thank you Levi. At least you stayed when everyone else left. My Dad quit the job and he knows good and well that if he's found by the Elders he's dead. My Mom was killed in action and it all happened on my seventh birthday! I didn't want to celebrate my birthday after that but the stupid Elders ordered me to."
I wanted to tell her that her mother was still alive and that she had a gag order placed on her by the Elder so she can't tell Eve that she's alive. But if her mother can't tell her that she's alive I'm not going to either. It's not my story to tell and there's no way Eve would believe me.
I reached over and gently hugged her. "It's going to be okay. I'm with you every step of the way."
I heard someone sniff. "Aww! That's so sweet!"
I looked over to see Mom and Dad standing in the doorway. Mom was the one crying and I had to keep myself from rolling my eyes.
Dad was holding a get well soon basket with an assortment of flowers and food in it. Eve looked at the basket and looked like she wanted to puke just by looking at the food.
Dad frowned. "What's wrong Eve?"
"Sorry I just puked after eating something and I can only eat soft foods at the moment. So it might take a while before I can get to the food," Eve answered.
Dad nodded. "Ah, I totally understand that. My wife was the same way every time she got pregnant."
"Yup and I will tell you that the first couple of months might be kind of rough. It's different for every woman," Mom said.
"How did you know Eve was pregnant? We haven't told anyone yet," I said.
"Oh sorry dear we overheard a little bit of your conversation," Mom said.
"Oh," I said.
"I can't believe Eve's job would force her to get pregnant!" He looked at Eve. "If I were in your shoes I would hate my job."
Eve smiled and shook her head. "I don't hate my job. I was raised to do this. This is what I'm good at and I can't imagine myself doing anything else."
Dad shrugged. "Well alright then."
"Besides," Eve said, "everything is going to be alright."
Mom and Dad nodded in agreement. They stayed and visited with us until visiting hours were over with. The doctors told me that I could stay longer since I was her spouse. I stayed until midnight and went home.
