Chapter 23: The Test

{Levi}

The next day after I placed a call to Ms. Terra to talk to her and she told me to come into her office so we could talk.

"I understand you're concerned about Eve," Ms. Terra said.

I nodded. "I am more than just concerned. I'm worried. I mean she came home the other day with a bullet wound on her leg! I know the wounds will be practically gone the next day but still."

"I get it but she's being trained for something important," Ms. Terra said.

I tilted my head. "Huh? What could be so important that her training has to jeopardize her health and wellbeing? Her job already does that as it is!"

Ms. Terra shook her head. "No, we're not pushing her to kill her, we're pushing her to make her stronger. And so far it's working."

I paused. "Huh? What do you mean it's working?"

"Well Trainer Michael had her pulling five semi trucks for five miles at the start of every session. At first she couldn't do it and now she can without breaking a sweat," Ms Terra sighed, "Not to mention she's being trained for the one job that I didn't want her to work at…"

My eyes went wide. "You mean she's trained to become an Assassin?"

She nodded and had a grim look on her face. "Yep. At the moment she's going to be tested in two different evaluations. The first one will be to see if she's ready to be placed as an Assassin. The second one will be supervised by the President of the United States of America."

I gave her a look of disbelief. "And why would the President be supervising a test for an Agent?"

She shook her head. "I can't tell you because I don't have the clearance to tell you. Whatever you do, don't tell Eve about this. She's working hard on her training and I don't want her to be more stressed out than what she already is. She's in the training phase right now so she's not being sent on any missions at the moment. But once the Elder's decide she's up for the task she'll get sent out on assignments."

"I see, so you're telling me that Eve will become an Assassin regardless of whatever restrictions that were put in place to keep her from getting that job?" I said.

"Yeah, it seems that the Elder's created a loophole for this," Ms. Terra said. "They created those loopholes to use on Eve specifically. But I have no doubts that they use the loopholes on other Agents as well."

By the time Ms. Terra got that last sentence out she was on the verge of tears. "I… I'm sorry… I tried to keep her from that… I really tried… "

I got up and pulled her into my arms while she cried on my shoulder. I had no idea that I was crying until I felt something wet roll down my cheeks. "No, don't cry. It's heartbreaking, yes but Eve's not dead yet, that's gotta be something right?"

I didn't realize saying that was a bad idea until it made Ms. Terra cry even harder.

"What did you do to my girlfriend Levi?" I heard someone say.

I looked over and frowned when I saw Rachel standing in the doorway glaring at me.

Ms. Terra let go of me and said, "Rachel, come inside and close the door."

Rachel did as she was told and took a seat across from Ms. Terra. She gave a look of concern. "What's going on? Did someone die or something? Levi hardly ever cries."

"It involves Eve," Ms. Terra started. She explained to Rachel the gist of what's been going on with her and after Ms. Terra finished the story Rachel looked like she was on the verge of tears.

I shook my head. "Oh no you don't! Please don't cry, I think I've cried enough for the day!"

"Well excuse me for finding some heartbreaking news and having emotions behind it," Rachel snapped.

"Okay then," I clicked my tongue in annoyance. "I'll take my leave. I'm done crying for the day."

As I got up to leave Rachel said, "So what are you going to do with Eve?"

I turned around. "I'm going to do the only thing that I can do. I'm going to be her support and I'll be there for her no matter what."

Rachel nodded and I left the room.

{Eve}

I got home from training and crashed on the bed and didn't even bother to change my clothes at the moment. I didn't want to. I felt sore all over from how hard Trainer Michael's been pushing me on my training. I felt like a human piñata. I probably looked like one too. It's too bad that I can't use my healing powers on myself and speed up the process. But I was given a shot that was mostly meant to help out with pain while my wounds healed.

I heard a knock on the door. I groaned, "Come in!"

"Mistress Evelyn?" The voice sounded a lot like Chloe so I sat up on the bed.

I looked at her. "What are you doing here Chloe?"

Chloe sighed, "Well I took some time to rethink things and I decided to ask Master Levi for a job. Not to mention I tried finding a job at other hotels even just on the cleaning staff but got turned down. So as of today, I'm your new maid. I'm here to make sure that after you get off work you take a shower, have your wounds looked at and make sure you eat something. Master Levi should be getting home in a couple of hours and I'm sure he'll want to take care of you then."

I blinked. "Levi made you my maid? Did I hear that correctly?"

She nodded. "Yeah you heard it correctly. Now as far as your wounds go, can you let me take a look at them?"

I hesitated at first and then took off my shirt. I heard Chloe gasp in surprise and I rolled my eyes. "It's not that bad and it comes along with the job."

She whistled, "Well if this is not that bad, what is bad?"

I deadpanned, "Being in a coma."

Once Chloe got started on taking care of my wounds my phone rang. I answered it, "Hello?"

"I see you made it home in one piece," Trainer Michael chuckled.

"Okay, you don't normally call me after work. What's going on?" I asked.

"Straight to the point as always," Trainer Michael said. "Remember how I told you there would be a test coming up soon?"

"Yeah, why?" I said.

"Because it's happening on Sunday," Trainer Michael responded.

"Say what now? It's happening on Sunday? I didn't realize it was that soon!" I exclaimed.

"Yeah well it's happening and whatever you do your best to make me proud. I'll give tomorrow off so you can rest before that because Sunday's only two days away anyway," Trainer Michael said. "I'll see you on Sunday at 10 am sharp! Make sure you're there and ready to go."

He hung up the phone before I could respond. I rubbed the temples on my forehead and groaned.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

"Is everything okay Mistress?" Chloe asked.

That made me growl, "I swear I'm going to have a talk with Levi about having the servants address me by another name. Just call me Mrs. Harriman okay?"

Chloe shook her head. "I can't do that, unless Master Levi says I can."

"Fine then, are you finished looking at my wounds?" I said.

She nodded. "Yes Mistress."

"You may go now," I said, giving Chloe a dismissive wave. She left the room and I grabbed a bathrobe and headed towards the shower.

After I took a shower I went to the bedroom to see Levi sitting on the bed. He had hung up his suit jacket and taken off his shoes and tie. I smirked. "That's so not fair."

He looked at me and tilted his head. "What?"

"You look so handsome even after a long day of work," I said. "In the meantime I feel like a human piñata."

"Come here Eve," He said.

As soon as I sat down Levi grabbed me and pulled me into a hug. When he let go he said, "Why are they pushing you so hard lately?"

"Apparently it's because there's going to be some big test coming up," I said. "At least I get tomorrow off so I can rest because it's on Sunday."

"Seriously?" Levi said.

I sighed, "Unfortunately yes. But at least I get to relax a little bit first. And I intend to do just that."

Levi seemed relieved as soon as I said I was going to use tomorrow to relax. "That's good to know. So what do you want to do?"

"I don't know, watch a movie or do something that bores me to tears," I said.

"Alright, it's your day off," Levi said.

The next day I did exactly as I said I was going to do. Relax and worry about nothing at all.

Sunday rolled around and I was ready to go. I got to the training area and did my stretches and waited for Trainer Michael to show up.

Trainer Michael smiled when he saw me. That kind of took me by surprise because he hardly ever smiles.

"What's that look for?" He asked.

"You're smiling, you hardly ever smile," I said.

"Today's going to be a good day for you, I just know it!" Trainer Michael declared.

I raised an eyebrow. "Uh, okay?"

"You won't be doing it on the training grounds, follow me," He said.

He turned around and I followed him to a place that looked like a place that gladiators would fight to the death in. Just like the places that I saw in the movies I wondered if a place still exists now. Or maybe it was just a replica of the real thing?

"I know what you might be thinking and yes this is a replica of a coliseum. The test will be taking place here in the center," Trainer Michael explained. "Remember the last time you were tested to be an Agent?"

I nodded. "Yes."

"Well it's going to be a little bit different. Your enemies will strike without warning but not until after I leave the area. In this test, anything goes and don't worry if you have to kill a couple of Agents because they know the risks in taking this type of job," He said.

"Let me guess, there have been Agents killed because they took part in a test?" I said.

He nodded. "Oh yeah. Now stand in the center and ready your fighting stance because once I leave, you're on your own."

I took a deep breath and waited for the first attack and that was when I saw it. An iron chain came flying towards me and wrapped around my neck and somehow it managed to break the necklace that I had on that I used to help me control my powers. I grabbed it and instead of breaking it I unwrapped it from my neck. Yanking on the chain I was able to draw my attacker out into the open.

"Well hello there," I taunted.

Seven Agents came out from the shadows staring at me menacingly and cracking their knuckles. I didn't say anything but I did laugh because they were acting as if I was going to be easily defeated. One of the Agents turned into a huge boa constrictor and when he lunged at me he tried to grab my neck but I was faster. I used my powers to make a dagger and stabbed the Agent with it and that caused him to change back into his human form.

He rolled onto his side and pulled the dagger out. The other agents advanced on me and one of them changed into a spider and I rolled my eyes at it. The spider shot out one of his webs at me and I slashed it by making another dagger.

Okay, that's it! I thought. It's time to even out the playing field!

I stomped my right foot on the ground and a boulder appeared and I used my wind powers to raise the boulder up in the air and threw it at the Agents. I was able to knock out two of the Agents that were charging at me with that attack alone.

I saw more Agents coming out of the shadows off in the distance. A normal human wouldn't be able to pick up on more people coming but because of my powers I'm able to. Although not every Agent has this type of power. Every Agent has their own set of skills and their own powers.

I could sense with my powers that there were at least fifty more Agents coming after me. Smiling, I rushed at the spider and jumped on top of it stabbing it repeatedly until the Agent changed into his human and fell to the ground. I placed my foot on the Agent's back and stomped on him as hard as I could. I heard his back snap and I let go of him.

Another Agent screamed at the top of their lungs and before I knew it I was stunned and couldn't move. You gotta be kidding me! Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that power.

I stuck in place for a good minute long enough for an Agent to grab me and hold me down so a couple of other Agents could take a swing at me. The Agent let me go and another Agent tried to land a kick to my stomach and I rolled over to my side. The kick landed on my back knocking the wind out of me. I managed to get up before another attack came at me and dodged but just barely.

I could almost imagine Trainer Michael shouting me to use my powers and up my game and that's what I did.

For some strange reason my Demon Power had yet to kick in but I could use my fire power and other powers at my disposal. The Agent's that I was fighting used their powers at their disposal as well. Some of the Agent's had the power to change into animals and they used that. Other Agent's had elemental powers like wind, water, fire and earth. Those agents were the tougher ones to deal with.

A few of the attacks landed good hits on me and if I was a normal human I'd be a goner by now. I had no idea how long the test was going on until I looked around me to see that half the agents I fought were either dead or injured enough not to be able to continue the fight.

There were only five Agent's capable of fighting and they were injured but weren't willing to throw in the towel yet. That was the number one rule of fighting. Don't fight fair because the enemy sure as hell won't. You keep fighting until your enemies are either disabled and can't fight anymore or dead.

Seeing that I still had five enemies left to fight, I had to keep going. One of the agents had the power to stun their enemies just by screaming. That Agent took me by surprise when they screamed and disabled me and the other agents they were fighting with. Before I knew it the other four agents that were fighting dropped dead suddenly and it happened so quick I didn't have time to blink.

The Agent smirked and then let me go. I smirked because that Agent looked like the biggest idiot ever! He totally forgot the number one rule of fighting. Don't fight fair!

Not to mention the same ability as I did he was able to create weapons out of thin air. He had a sword in his hand so I decided to do the same thing.

"You idiot!" I said. "You forgot the number one rule of fighting!"

The Agent rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah I know, don't fight fair. I could've just killed you but where's the fun in that?"

I didn't respond. I took my sword and charged at him. When it comes down to sword fighting, that's one area where my skills are kind of lacking. So he kind of had the upper hand but I wasn't going to fight fair because he was charging at me for one of his attacks, I made an automatic handgun and fired a shot at his arm. That caused him to drop his sword at the last minute and stumble backwards.

Before he could try and stun me again I shot him in the neck and shortly after that, I shot him in the head. His lifeless body fell to the ground with a thud. I scanned the area just to make sure that there were no more enemies coming after me and let out a sigh of relief when I found none.

After I sighed I felt the urge to cough and when I did I saw blood on the ground. I laughed, "Just in fucking time!"

Right on cue my Demon Power decided to kick in and the only color I was able to see was red. That lasted for a couple of minutes when the ground started to shake and I saw three agents coming towards me dressed in white scrubs and had silver chains in their hands.

One of them threw their chain at me and I dodged it.

"Stop it! Calm down Evelyn!" I heard Trainer Michael shouting.

I didn't calm down. If anything, Trainer Michael only seemed to agitate me even more. I ran towards Trainer Michael and tried to take a swing at him. He dodged me and used that opportunity to grab the silver chain that was thrown at me and tied me up with it.

I felt the prick of a needle on my shoulder and the next thing I knew, it was lights out.

{Ms. Terra}

"Well, how did she do?" I said. I had a hope that maybe, just maybe Eve failed the test to become an Assassin and she just needed more time to learn. But unfortunately that was wishful thinking.

Trainer Michael grinned. "She passed! The next thing to do is to get her ready for would be the Presidential Evaluation and I'm pretty sure that Mr. President will be pleased."

My heart dropped into my stomach and I felt sick.

Trainer Michaël frowned. "You know you should be happy that Evelyn passed her test! This is a big milestone for her! Oh wait, I forgot you were one of those people holding Evelyn back from her true potential."

My jaw dropped. "Her true potential? You're joking right?"

Trainer Michael got up from his chair and leaned forward into my face. He cupped my chin and made me look at him. "I'm not joking Evelyn is a Prodigy for a reason whether you like it or not. She's going to do the job that she was raised to do finally and there's nothing you can do about it. And I have a feeling she's going to excel at this job and she will save the world when the time comes. Everything will be fine. You worry too much."

He let go of me, turned around and left the room. Knew from that moment forward there was nothing I could do to help Eve now.
