Chapter 3: Hospital stay and Rachel's idea

Chapter 3: Hospital stay and Rachel's idea

{Levi}

As soon as I got a call from Rachel telling me to go visit Evelyn in the hospital I rushed over to the hospital without a second thought. When I got there the receptionist told me what room she was in and once I went to the room I was somewhat shocked at what I saw. Evelyn was lying on the bed fast asleep with one of her ankles and one of her wrists chained to the bed. She looked like she was a prisoner and I couldn't help but wonder what she did to be treated that way.

"I bet you're wondering why she's chained to the bed?" I heard a familiar voice say. I turned around and saw it was Ms. Terra.

I nodded. "Yes I do. Did she do something wrong?"

Ms. Terra shook her head rapidly. "Oh no she didn't. She's being restrained for her own good. Do you remember her coming into work the other day with nosebleeds?"

I nodded. "Yes Agent 60 and her were sitting in the breakroom when I saw it."

"Yeah that's the result of her not resting long enough in between assignments because she has more than one assignment other than just watching over you. I swear the words rest and vacation aren't in her vocabulary for whatever the reason," Ms. Terra explained.

Evelyn stirred and opened her eyes. She looked around and rolled her eyes. "Exactly why am I in the hospital for this time?"

Ms. Terra raised an eyebrow. "What do you think, Agent 36?"

Evelyn groaned. "Seriously? I'm fine-"

"No, you're not or we wouldn't need to do this just to get you to rest. What's wrong with you? Are you trying to die at a young age?" Ms. Terra asked.

Evelyn scoffed, "I'm fine, what are you, my mother?"

Ms. Terra's eyes went wide at that question. As soon as the look of surprise came she composed herself, "No I'm not your mother but I am your Boss. And whatever happened to not dying before the objective is met?"

Evelyn smirked. "Well I'm the type of Agent that refuses to die!"

Before she could say anything else she started coughing and she coughed up blood. Ms. Terra went and grabbed a tissue and handed it to her. The tissue filled up with blood the moment she wiped her mouth on it and then she sneezed and Ms. Terra grabbed another tissue. Once Evelyn put the tissue to her nose and that tissue filled up with blood as well.

Ms. Terra gave Evelyn a serious look and said, "Did you use the tank?"

Evelyn hesitated and didn't say anything. She sighed, "Yes… I did."

Ms. Terra groaned and then looked at me. "Can you give us some space so I can talk some sense into my Agent in private?"

I nodded. "Sure."

I got up from my chair and left the room.

Once Levi left, Mother Terra turned to me. She did something that she's done to me every time I've done something stupid out in the field, she slapped me.

"Are you stupid? You do realize the next time you push your abilities like that can kill you right?" She scolded.

I rolled my eyes. "Yes I know that."

"Then why do you keep pushing yourself?" Mother Terra asked.

That question made me pause. "Honestly, I don't know. But the only thing I can figure is pushing myself with anything runs in my blood. My parents were agents you know. If I die on one of my assignments then I'll be following in my mother's footsteps. She died in action and I sure as hell am not going to follow in my cowardly father's footsteps by running away from my duties as an agent."

She sighed, "Look, I get it you want to be the best Agent that you can be. But part of being a good Agent is to take care of your health. And resting in between jobs doesn't mean you'll be running from your duties. I mean look at you. Do you think you can do your job while coughing up blood and having nosebleeds every five minutes?"

I shook my head. "No, but on the bright side I did kill half of that gang that you sent me after and their leader. So you're welcome!"

Mother Terra snorted. "You're really something you know that?" She paused. "You know you're of that age that you can get married and settle down now. Honestly, I think it would be a good thing for you."

I shook my head rapidly. "Oh no, no thanks! Remember the last time I tried something like that? That asshole strung me along only to find out that he was already married with a child."

"I can always ask the Elders to arrange someone to be with you," Mother Terra said.

I shook my head again. "No thanks! I'm good."

She chuckled, "Alright then, but please take care of your health. If you didn't then we wouldn't have to put you in the hospital like this."

I sighed, "Fine. I'll work on it."

I started coughing again and Mother Terra handed me another tissue. "I think we should call the nurse in to give you some medicine for that."

She reached over and pressed the call button. A nurse answered it, "Yes, how may I help you?"

"The patients awake and she's coughing up blood," Mother Terra said.

"Okay then, I'm on my way!" The nurse said.

The nurse was quick to come into the room. I'm going to assume because of how the nurse was, the nurse was probably an agent as well. It wouldn't surprise me considering there are more than one agency that has agents like the agency that I work for. She brought with her a tray that had a small pan and a couple of bandages and a cup that was filled with some sort of medicine. At least that's what it looked like.

"Alrighty then let's see what we got here," the nurse said.

Before she could do anything I coughed up blood again. The nurse grimaced. "Oof! That cough sounds like it hurts! Are you in any pain?"

I shook my head. "No."

"I see, well it's a good thing the Elder's developed medicine to help with the side effects of overusing your abilities. You really should take it easy Ms. Evelyn," the nurse said.

Mother Terra chuckled, "Don't worry I already scolded her about her health."

I covered my mouth to keep myself from barfing and it was as if the nurse knew I was going to throw up and she handed the small pan that was on the tray that she brought with her. I made the mistake of looking at the throw up after I threw up and barfed again.

The nurse stood by and gently patted my back waiting for me to finish throwing up. Right when I thought I was finished I kept throwing up. Finally I stopped throwing up. The nurse took the pan from me and wiped my mouth off with a clean towel. She handed me the cup that had the medicine in it. "Drink this. I know it's not going to taste good but it's medicine. So it's bound to taste nasty."

I chuckled. I braced myself and took a gulp of the drink and I gagged after I swallowed. The nurse snorted. "Told you so. Finish the rest of the drink and I'll bring you something to eat."

I did as I was told and the medicine tasted so nasty. The nurse laughed and handed me a glass of water to get the taste of the medicine out of my mouth. "I'll be right back."

The nurse returned with a tray of food that consisted of a small pack of crackers, a couple pieces of toast with jam and a bowl of chicken noodle soup. She handed it to me and placed it on the moving table on my bedside after adjusting the height. "Go ahead and eat at least this meal for the day because there is a slight possibility you're not going to be hungry after this. However, you will need to drink a cup of that medicine I just gave you every other hour."

I groaned, "Do I have to?"

The nurse nodded. "Yup! I know it tastes nasty but I'll give you something to drink to get the awful taste out of your mouth." She sighed, "How many times did you use the tank?"

When an Agent gets asked how many times did they use the tank that's codewords for how many times did you push your abilities past their limits? An average Agent can push their limits at least two times, a good Agent can do it at least three times, a top ranking Agent like me can do it four times.

"Four," I said.

The nurse groaned, "Why do the high rankers have overdo it so much? Oh well, now that I know how many times you used the tank, that'll give me a better gauge of how long you'll be in the hospital this time."

This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it

"And how long do I have to stay?" I asked.

She sighed, "Four days and you'll have to drink that nasty medicine too! Don't worry, the chains are long enough so you can use the bathroom and no, you won't be able to escape because there are guards outside your room."

I rolled my eyes at that statement. Of course they wouldn't allow me to escape! I'm not that dumb even though I hate the idea of hospital stays for anything.

Mother Terra chuckled, "It's alright nurse, I think Little Eve here isn't that stupid. She knows when she needs to stay put." She turned to me and gave me a stern look. "You do know that don't you?"

"Yes Mother Terra I know," I said.

Mother Terra's phone went off and she took it out of her purse and looked at it and smiled. "Well I should get going. I'll be back to visit you. Make sure you eat, take your medicine and don't give the nurse a hard time, okay?"

I snorted and said with sarcasm, "Yes mother, I'll be a good girl!"

Mother Terra looked like she wanted to say something but she shook her head and rolled her eyes. She didn't say anything else as she got up and left the room.

I sat on the couch in the living room staring at Rachel dumbfounded. I had no idea what to think of what she just said. She just told me that the only reason she's with me is the same reason I'm with her to get her parents off her back. Her parents don't believe that she's a lesbian. She has a girlfriend and wants to be with her. The reason she had sex with me was to save face and I'll have to admit that was the only reason I had sex with her.

"So there that's the whole story," Rachel said. "And if you think I didn't notice the way you were checking out our former PA Evelyn you're sorely mistaken."

"Wait, is that what this is about? Seriously?" I said, "You didn't have to make up-"

"Nope, this story isn't made up!" Rachel said, "I was thinking that you could call off the engagement? But knowing my parents and your parents, they're not going to accept that calling off this marriage is a matter of we don't like each other."

"Right, I don't think I should…" I said, still trying to process everything that Rachel had just said to me.

"I figured you might be a little bit hesitant to help me out so I'd like you to meet someone," Rachel said. She smiled as she turned to someone standing in the doorway and I was shocked to see it was Ms. Terra! Rachel went over to Ms. Terra and gave her a long passionate kiss.

"Okay, so the story's not made up," I said. "How do you expect me to call off the engagement and make a good believable excuse?"

"That's where my Little Eve comes into play!" Ms. Terra said with excitement after she stopped kissing Rachel. They sat down on the couch facing me together holding hands.

"I'm sorry I shouldn't have kept this a secret from you for as long as I have but I couldn't keep it in any longer. I think if you're the one who breaks off the engagement my parents will believe you more than they'd believe me. Trust me, I know I've tried breaking off the engagement myself plenty of times and they still don't believe me," Rachel said. "But if you break off I want the excuse to be more truthful and I want you to walk away from this just as happy as I'll be."

"We know that you like my Little Eve," Ms. Terra said. "We want you to get together with her. The only problem is she respects boundaries and knowing her even if Rachel tells her it's okay to be with you…" She looked like a lightbulb went off in her head as she was trying to reason with herself out loud. She leaned over and whispered into Rachel's ear.

Rachel's eyes lit up. "Oh that's a great idea!"

"Mind keeping me in the loop here?" I asked.

She shook her head. "Nope, I'm not saying a word."

My jaw dropped and I shook my head trying to figure out what the hell she was getting at. At this point, I didn't want to ask because I had already a bombshell dropped in my lap as it was.

"But before we can do anything about this idea," Ms. Terra said, "Little Eve is in the hospital and if she doesn't give the nurse a hard time and takes her medicine like a good girl she'll be out in four days. She's in the hospital because she decided to push it on one of her missions. We tend to have more than enough Agents working for one client so that we can send out our top Agents for different assignments even when working for an important client. So we need her to be healthy first."

I nodded.

Rachel grinned. "Speaking of which, I think you should visit her! Spend as much time with her as you like but then again you were going to do that anyway. If you think that's going to make me feel insecure then you're sorely mistaken."

I blinked. "Uh… Okay?"

Rachel laughed, "Wow you look really shocked right now! I don't blame you because my parents had the same type of look on their faces. No this isn't a joke and it's not made up. I want to set you and Little Eve up."

"How? We're engaged and I don't think she'll go for me because of that," I said.

"That's what I was saying earlier," Ms. Terra said. "But don't worry I'm going to help you with that. For now, just go visit her and try to get to know her."

I nodded. "Okay that I can do."

Rachel giggled, "Now if you don't mind I'm going to go spend some time with my girl."

Rachel and Ms. Terra stood up from the couch and walked out of the room hand in hand. As soon as they left I smiled. This was an interesting development which meant all bets were off and I could be with anyone that I wanted to. But I had to figure out how to get Evelyn to fall for me. Although Ms. Terra said they would help me out with that, I don't know if whatever plan they have in play will work.

***

The next day I went to the hospital to see Evelyn and she was sitting on the bed, well more like lying on the bed staring up at the ceiling as if she was bored out of her mind. I felt kind of sorry for her because an hyperactive woman like her is always on the go. It has got to be hard for her to slow down and take it easy in general. It reminded me of my father because he was just like that and had a hard time sitting still.

I had bought Evelyn a get well soon basket with assorted fresh fruits and chocolate in it. I thought about getting her flowers or something like that to go with it but I figured that might be a little over the top so I just opted to get the basket. I knocked on the door that was wide open and said, "Hey there, how are you doing today?"

She sat up and looked at me. "Bored out of my mind! I've tried watching Tv, reading a book, looking at stuff and playing games on my phone but nothing has helped with my restlessness. I really need to work on not overdoing things in the field anymore. At least I can eat something without feeling queasy afterwards."

"Well that's good," I said. "Speaking of food, I got you a get well soon basket!"

I handed the basket to her and she smiled. I always love it when she smiles because when she smiles it adds to her beauty. Not to mention it's refreshing to see her smile from the mostly serious look she has on her face most of the time at work.

"Thank you," Evelyn said as she took the basket and picked up the grapes that were in the basket and started eating them first.

There was a short awkward silence between us before I said, "So what's it like to be a security guard?"

She made a face. "I'm not just a security guard. I'm an Agent who is a government worker. And the agency that I work for is just a cover for what my real job is. That's all I can tell you about that."

"It must be a hard job if you feel you have to push yourself to the point that it lands you in the hospital," I said.

She shrugged. "That's my fault for not using a bit of self control. But when you're surrounded by the enemy on all sides and backup is an hour away from your location, that's when it's time to kick into overdrive."

"Is that what happened on your assignment?" I asked.

She nodded. "Yup. Although those gangsters really seemed to think that they had the upper hand. That type of thinking, underestimating your opponent, that's what got them killed. I took them out and their leader and that fight was not easy."

Before I could say anything else I heard Agent 60 come into the room. He smiled at Evelyn, well more like he smiled at her get well soon basket. Without warning he grabbed an apple from the basket and started eating it.

She growled, "Seriously? That's my food, you should at least ask before you take something!"

"What?" Agent 60 said after swallowing a bite of the apple. "I saw the basket and I was hungry."

"Well there's food in the cafeteria you lazy pig!" She chuckled.

"Aww, this is the thanks I get for visiting a sick agent?" Agent 60 mocked.

She rolled her eyes. "Again that's my food, at least ask before you take something! And it's a gift courtesy of Mr. Harriman, who you just completely ignored when you came in here and started snacking on my food!"

Agent 60 turned around and saw me. "Oh hey Mr. Harriman didn't see you there. Sorry if I'm not professional at the moment because I'm not on the clock yet."

I raised an eyebrow. "Yet?"

He nodded. "Yup, I am Little Eve's guard dog. I'll be standing outside the room to make sure she doesn't try to escape from the hospital before she's recovered fully."

"Stop calling me Little Eve! Only Mother Terra can do that, not you. When we're off the clock it's just Eve to you! When we're on the clock it's Agent 36," Evelyn snapped.

"Touché!" Agent 60 said.

I chuckled because Evelyn and Agent 60 looked like two kids arguing about a fruit basket.

I looked at Agent 60 and smiled. "I can always get you a fruit basket if you're that hungry, Little Agent 60!"

Evelyn covered her mouth and stifled a laugh. Agent 60 glared at her. "That's not funny Eve!"

"I think it is funny!" Evelyn said.

"No it's not-" Agent 60 started.

"Children! Break it up!" I heard a woman shout. I looked at the woman and looked at Evelyn and they looked very similar. She had shoulder length black hair and black eyes, Evelyn had the same type of hair color and same color eye. Although the one thing I noticed was this woman was a little bit skinnier than Evelyn, the difference I could spot was Evelyn's figure was curvy and her ass is bigger than this woman's ass was. Not to mention the woman's face looked rather childlike on the other hand Evelyn's face looked more adult.

Even though these were two different people I couldn't help but wonder if they were siblings. The woman must've noticed me looking between her and Evelyn because she rolled her eyes. "In case you're wondering, no I'm not related to Eve, I am her best friend though." She held out her hand to me. "My name's Daisy! Nice to meet you Mr. Hottie!"

I heard Evelyn laughing when I felt my face turn red. Evelyn composed herself, "Sorry about your luck Daisy but this guy just happens to be one of Cornwall Security's clients and his name is Mr. Harriman. And he's already spoken for. He's engaged."

Daisy looked at me in surprise. "You wouldn't happen to be Mr. Harriman, the billionaire set to be married in a couple of months would you?"

I nodded. "Yes, that would be me."

She pouted, "That's a shame, the girl you picked is a looker and so are you! You two will have the cutest children ever! I bet you have a six pack of abs underneath your shirt. I'm jealous!"

"Uh, Daisy?" Agent 60 said.

"Yes?" Daisy replied.

"Mr. Harriman is a client and I don't think his fiancé would appreciate you talking about him like that!" Agent 60 scolded.

"What? I was just saying the truth!" Daisy said.

At this moment, I was trying to figure out excuses to leave because this visit with Evelyn didn't turn out like I was hoping it was. Then my phone beeped and I took it out of my pocket to see that I had a text message from Rachel. It said: Meet Ms. Terra and I for lunch please.

That message didn't sound like a request, it sounded more like an order. I replied: Okay I'll be there what time and place?

Rachel responded: The seafood restaurant next to the hospital in an half hour. See you then!

I responded with a see you then also and put my phone away. "Well this visit has been fun, but I gotta go meet my fiancé for lunch."

With that, I left the room.
