A Pact And A Quest

It's the first time we sit down to talk, though time goes at a different speed for her.

What's been two weeks for me, was two days for the Goddess.

Sitting down is a surreal experience too.

Imagine having a crush on someone, but when you confess, you turn into them and watch yourself.

Does it make sense? It makes none to me, but here I am, looking at a copy of myself.

Thinking about it hurts my head, or Alexandra's, since I'm in her shell.

[Pro tip: Then don't think about it.]

"Um, could you swap us back? It's so confusing like this." The Me-Sandra asks, but seeing my body shake my head seals this awkward situation.

"There's too much mana to interfere. If I free your soul, astral creatures might gobble it up."

Yeah, that sounds like a problem. So what was the point of making a copy?

She explains using my mouth, making me look smarter.

"I'll return to your world like this, and switch back there. Your world has no mana, nothing to interfere but it will take much more effort."

So even a Goddess has limits. Well, she can use other sources.

But she didn't make this copy to evaporate it, at least I hope. I'll deal with this weirdness for now.

"Fine, where should we start?" This is already a tough question.

Apart from what I got from peeking into her memories without permission, I know nothing about her.

"Let's introduce ourselves again." She offers as if she read my mind.

As a Goddess with the same access to my memories, she might do.

"Okay, fair. I'm Leona Smith, eighteen years old, and first year in the Technical University." It's strange to say these after acting like her for two weeks in a world without that uni.

"I have a little sister, Emily, you already met, and I'll spoil her rotten once I'm home." With a deep breath, I wait for her turn.

"Nice to meet you, Leona. We were off to a rough start, huh?" She giggles, but it's awkward since it's my face.

It lacks Alex's beauty, and I wish I could keep her body instead.

"I'm Alexandra, and I don't have a family name like you. I didn't have a real family for decades. And it might seem we're the same age, but you don't want to know the truth."

Her nervous smile and blushing are much closer to what I'd put on my face.

At least thanks to the swap, it's not as scary to talk to her. It's almost like she isn't perfect.

"How old?" I raise an eyebrow, grinning at myself.

"I don't even know. The time dilation messed things up, but I was sixty-four before I went to your world. So somewhere between sixty-five and seventy-four now?"

"Jesus Christ, you aged great." We both laugh.

"I'm also the Thirteenth Bride in the Demon Lord's Harem, but we never had a wedding." The Orcs already told me, but I'm happy to hear it from her too. "And I'm the Goddess of Luck."

"That's the strangest part. Don't get me wrong, but you don't seem lucky. At all." Another giggle.

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

"No. I'm supposed to bring luck to others, and not be lucky myself." She explains with a smile that looks almost good, even on my awkward face. "It's a long story."

"I wish I could impress you with similar titles, but the best I can come up with is 'Older Sister'."

The laughs become more and more natural.

"So you like it here?" She asks a bit later, once we're past the introductions.

"Don't you? It's such a strange and exciting world." It's impossible not to gush about it. "Back home, I tried my best to avoid everyone and everything. Here, I can't wait to explore more."

"It's that much more dangerous though." She warns me, planting selected memories inside my head.

It shows brutal battles, pitched duels, death, and destruction.

The images are too fast, but I remember seeing some in her memories.

Does it mean she ran away scared? I can't ask that, my face looks sad enough already.

"I ran into some scary stuff for sure." While I can't pull the same party trick and share my memories with her, I mention my encounter with the First Bride.

Or when her Orcs suspected me of being an imposter and chased me off.

She goes hysterical when I tell her how I kidnapped poor Mabel at the System's suggestion.

I also praise the thing, especially the Masterful Crafting.

But I'm not afraid to point out the shortcomings.

This is especially true for the bugs and the tsundere behavior.

[Notice: I never would have betrayed you.]

We talk for a long time, and it feels like we have known each other for ages.

While it's still far from a confession, I'm sure I made a friend.

We should have done this much sooner.

"Okay, then here is my suggestion." She claps her hands an hour later. "I'll return and take your body with me. You can keep mine for a while longer, and stay here."

"I'll make another copy you can use in this world, but it takes some special materials only found in dungeons. So until then, we'll take turns in this one." She offers, standing up.

"I'll take notes for you tomorrow, and return in ten days, then we swap. Keep doing what you've been doing. Help my Orcs, make peace with the Demon Lord, but don't give yourself to him."

"And I'll take notes when it's my turn in the uni." I nod with a smile. "And introduce you to my little sister so she won't think you're someone suspicious. Plus I'll get that material for you."

"What do you plan with the Last Bride and that Court Wizard?" She asks as we shake hands.

"I'll safeguard them. I'm still not a fan of this Demon Lord of yours. And the guy would be dangerous to let go." I note and add. "The Goblin and the rest can tell Omega we're on his side."

"Yes. Let's go with that. It's nice to meet you again, Leo."

"You too, Alex." We both smile and blush, but it doesn't last long.

The Goddess disappears in my body with a bright flash.

"Not a fan of tearful goodbyes, huh?"
