(Rebecca Storm POV)
I looked down at the carnage in front of me. Blood spilt every, the dead bodies of demons strewn everywhere. If one would look up hell in the dictionary, this is what would come up.
This battle resulted in zero casualties from the human side as my comrades and I killed whoever tried to escape. Hundreds of thousands of demons died with 4 S ranks also dying.
'This was too easy. This was the biggest army the demons had. They should have put a bigger defence.'
Suddenly a soldier arrived in front of me and saluted.
"Ma'am, the commander would like to meet with you. He says it's urgent."
I nodded and immediately arrived at the commander's tent. I had a sinking feeling. Something terrible was happening
"Oh good, you're here. Mage Empress Rebecca Storm, you must hear this."
He pushed the button on the radio.
"HELP! HELP! There is a large platoon of invading S rank demons. They have devasted areas 12 and 7. They are currently attacking Area 2. Someone, please send reinfo.... zzzzzzz."
The radio cut off there. The bad feeling I had was coming true.
"Shit, we've been had. This army was just the bait. But still, I can't believe they would sacrifice such a big army."
"There is another problem Ma'am. It is rumoured that this army is being led by the demon king."
"Demon king? Did they choose another one already?"
The demon king was the title given to the strongest demon, similar to the Mage Emperor for the humans.
The reason why humanity was so confident in winning the war was that I had killed the previous one a year ago.
'Even still, how did they get past the detection?'
S ranks were living nukes and could cause massive devastation if left unchecked. That's we kept track of all the opposing S ranks. The gathering of over 100 S ranks would not go noticed.
'If they keep heading in that direction, they'll reach human lands and cause mass destruction. I cannot let them kill millions of innocent humans.'
I suddenly remembered something. The Academy. It was located on the northwestern side of the continent, far from the demon lands. But, they kept heading in that direction, they would reach it.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
I couldn't let that happen. The academy was one of the most important places to humanity and losing it would be devastating. I also remember that one of my granddaughters was also attending there.
Violet Storm. Her parents said she looked like me, with long purple hair. Though I'd never met her, she was still extremely important to me.
Though I was the hero I was still biased. I loved my family more than anything in the world. If I was given the choice of sacrificing a city full of millions of people or saving my children or grandchildren, I would choose the latter without hesitation.
This reaffirmed my decision. With my granddaughter in their path of destruction, I couldn't afford to waste time recovering my mana. I had to go and stop them.
"How long since that message was received."
"Around 5 minutes Ma'am."
"What does high command say?"
"They haven't responded."
I couldn't afford to wait. We needed to act immediately. I immediately dialled a number on the telephone. It was the personal number of a friend of mine in the higher-ups. Soon she picked up.
"Laura! What the hell is going on?"
"Oh, it's you, Rebecca. You must be calling because of the situation. Well, the high command is in chaos. They aren't sure how to act. They are many conflicting opinions and the conversation is going nowhere."
"Godammit! Errrr... whatever. We need to act now if we don't want the demons to enter our domain. We cannot hesitate. Millions of people's lives are on the line."
"Well, try telling that the commanders. Countermeasures are trying to be made but we aren't getting anywhere."
"Fuck strategies. We need to act now. Tell them this is a direct order from me. Call all the S ranks that humanity has except the ones stationed at Central High. Tell them to meet at..."
I quickly glanced at the map before continuing.
"...Scorchfields in two hours flat. That's going be the location of the final battle."
I then hung up and called the rest of my comrades.
"What now Rebecca? We just finished."
Matthew complained as soon as I summoned him.
"We need to head to Scorchfields. We've been had. A company of S ranks are planning to invade the human domain."
Thomas' eyes widened in surprise.
"Wow, I didn't think they had that many S ranks. I thought we killed most of them."
"Me too. I don't know how they hid that many, but it doesn't matter. All we need to do is kill them."
We all nodded collectively.
"Well then let's go."
We didn't waffle any further and sprinted to the Scorchfields. There were two reasons why I chose that location.
Firstly, they had to cross it to arrive at the human domain, so we would be able to meet up with them.
Secondly and the most important reason was that it was the most damaged area on the continent. Since it was located near the borders, skirmishes often occurred there, especially at the start of the war.
After centuries of fighting, including battles between S ranks, turned this area into a wasteland and practically became a desert. Life wouldn't be able to grow there for centuries.
We ran at a moderate pace until we reached Sorchfields. We circled the demons so we could face them from the front.
I used my mana to detect many S rank presences in the distance. They weren't approaching and seemed to be resting. I was fine with that. We needed a couple of hours to get prepared for this battle.
I could feel the enemy demons react to my probing and notice us. However, they didn't make a move. Annihilating thousands of kilometres of land must have drained them of their mana.
Soon over the course of a couple of hours, all the S ranks arrived and the demons started their march.
As they approached I could feel the mana in the atmosphere increase drastically. Any regular person and even low ranked mages would die just being in the presence of such a large amount of mana being influenced by extremely powerful wills.
Only B ranks and above would be able to move in such an environment. However, none of us faltered. We stared at the approaching army. The outcome of this moment would decide the fate of the continent.
