My Life After Death
Nox Oculta [3]

Nox Oculta [3]

A week soon passed and the auction was coming up. I could hear the chatter of the guests outside. During that time Veronica introduced me to the other slaves and supported me when I needed it.

Most of the slaves were extremely kind to me. They all probably pitied me. They ensured I was always the first to eat and shared their food if I was hungry.

Unlike the food that I had when I was captured by the bandits, the food Vision fed us was incredibly delicious. They must want their slaves to be in the best shape when they sell them to the buyers.

Then soon, the chatter all stopped, and I could hear the auction start. The announcer introduced himself and the first items were coming in.

A bidding war occurred as each item was being sold at unfathomable prices. Each item here could be used to buy our town multiple times over.

Then soon, the prisoners were escorted out to be sold. I wondered when I was going out.

*BOOM*

Suddenly an explosion sounded and the room started to. The guard tried to investigate but Veronica immediately broke her cuffs and suddenly the guards all collapsed.

They were not producing any mana anymore. They were dead.

'h-how? She didn't even do anything.'

Then I heard a voice in my mind.

'Julius, it is me, Veronica. Stay close to me. I will protect you.'

I decide to follow her. Though she may try to exploit me, it was probably better than being captured by Vision.

I followed her to the stage where attacks were being exchanged. It was the first time I had seen fighting on this scale.

There were men in dark clothes killing the guards and arresting the bidders. However, some of the bidders tried to fight back and some just spontaneously combusted leaving nothing behind but ashes.

I was worried about a stray attack killing me, but Veronica blocked every attack that came flying at me.

I saw Heron in the corner of my eye. The usually casual person was pissed. Heron saw us and tried to capture me, but he soon dropped dead like the guards in our room.

'Her ability seems to be something that allows her to mess with people's minds.'

'You guessed correctly Julius. Reading your mind and your memory is extremely easy for me.'

'Wait did she mess with my mind and does she know about my reincarnation?'

If she could read my memories, she would know I was reincarnated from another world.

'To answer your first question, no I haven't. And secondly, I know about your what... you were thinking of something but I lost it.'

Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator.

Veronica read my mind again, but the topic of reincarnation was eluding her.

'Can she not find out about my reincarnation?'

'Find out about what? What have you done? Whenever you are thinking, your thoughts seem to cut off suddenly.'

Based on her reaction, anything about reincarnation is like a blank space to her.

'Nothing, I was testing how to stop you from reading my mind by cutting off my thoughts.'

'Cheeky brat.'

She seemed to believe that. There was no way an F rank could guard against her otherwise.

Soon after a couple of minutes, all the threats were neutralized. She then asked one of the people in dark clothes to free the prisoners.

"What about the person beside you?"

"I want to talk to him."

The person then left and Veronica then turned to me.

"Ok Julius, I won't lie to you and give to you straight. I want you to join us."

"Huh?"

"I work for an organization called the Specialized Unit of Intelligence, Tracking and Elimination, or SUITE for short. I guess you could call us janitors who monitor and assassinate the rotten parts of our society."

"But what does that have to do with me? I am only an F rank."

"For now. You are extremely talented. I am surprised another person that talented appeared in the same generation as the young miss. You will be trained as an assassin and learn how to utilize your abilities."

"What if I refuse?"

"I wouldn't recommend it, but I'll erase the conversation we are having right now from your mind and you will be sent to an orphanage. But from eyes I can tell, you want to become stronger."

Veronica was right. This offer was extremely tempting but there had to be some caveats.

"What are the risks?"

"You are cautious, that's a good habit to have in this business. Wellll... the obvious risk is death. Every mission you are given has an inherent risk of death. Secondly, since we work behind the scenes, our existence cannot be revealed. Lastly, we do not tolerate betrayals. The consequences will make death look like a paper cut. That's about it."

It seems too good to be true. I figured about the risks of death since I was going to be assassinating people. The other rules made sense as well. It was a perfect opportunity. I had no reason to reject them.

'Wait how do I know they actually work for the government?'

'Don't worry, our leader and my mentor is the SS rank, Umbra Moria. You will probably meet him when we bring you back to the base. He is quite famous in the higher levels of the government.'

'You are reading my mind again. Then you should already know my answer.'

'I want to hear your answer out loud. And don't worry, I don't read the minds of my allies unless there is an unavoidable circumstance.'

"Ok, I accept your deal."

"That's good to hear. Also from your memories, I heard your parents called you Jules, so that's what I'm calling you from now on."

"If a pretty woman like you is saying it, I won't mind."

"Aren't you a cute little sweet talker? You are going to be a lady killer when you are older."

"Hmm, I'll be in your care. I also have two selfish requests, can I bury my townspeople that were murdered in the attack and locate the ones that were kidnapped."

I hadn't had time to mourn my father's death and I wanted to save my mother from the clutches of Carl Ramirez.

"The first task isn't difficult but the second one might be impossible. Vision is extremely careful and extremely good at hiding their allies' locations. That's what makes them so infamous. I'll have agents try to trace you back to your kidnapper, but expect we'll hit a dead end."

I was surprised even one of my requests was considered.

"We aren't monsters you know. We can entertain our members' request if it isn't detrimental to us."

"Didn't you just say you won't read my mind?"

"I didn't, your facial expressions gave it away. Ok, let's go to your town."

"Wait what now?"

"Yeah, I have just completed my mission and I have time to kill."

"What about giving a report?"

"My subordinates will deal with those annoyances."

After cleaning up and erasing all traces of the battle, we left the auction house and exited the casino. After the explosion, the casino was completely emptied.

We entered the streets of La Empresa and travelled to a military outpost. After confirming her identity, we rented a jeep. Then Veronica, some agents, and I left for Burten Town.
