(Amina POV)
"Amina, it's your turn."
"..."
You're spacing out."
"Huh? Oh... what did you move?"
"I castled with this rook."
"Um...ok. I'll do this then."
I moved my knight forward, giving me a better position. I was hoping to lure his rook out so I could back-rank him, though he probably wouldn't fall for it.
"Are you still worried about the written exam from last week?"
"No, I was just thinking about someone else."
Jules then moved his bishop forward.
"Don't worry about it. You should focus on the practical examination coming up. That's what determines whether you get into the mage course. Though with your skill it should be a breeze."
"Yeah."
The allotted time for my practical exam was later today. I was going to leave in about an hour.
We continued with the game. I stacked my queen on top of my rook. In the next move, I checked his king with it.
"Check"
"Huh? Why'd you do that? I'll just take your queen."
He moved his rook taking my queen. I then took his rook with my rook.
"Check."
"Wait shit. Is this checkmate."
"No, not really yet. You can move your bishop back, protecting your king. But I'll take next it so it's checkmate."
"Fuck, I didn't think about getting back-ranked."
"Good game. I should prepare myself now. I don't want to be late. Wish me luck."
"Yeah, good luck."
I flicked my hair back and went to the training room to get my weapon and change into my combat uniform.
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
My weapon was a jet-black bow that could fold into a naginata. I couldn't decide which was better for me so I choose both. It was also better for me to have both a close-range and long-range option.
The combat uniform I had was a high-end military uniform. It was a skin-tight uniform made from mana-conductive fibres. It was extremely tough and regular attacks could penetrate it.
It was an unassuming dark green uniform. These uniforms were used exclusively by high ranked mages and were extremely expensive.
They weren't any on the market and couldn't be bought for personal use. Though with my grandfather's connections, it wasn't hard for him to get a couple of sets.
I wore a coat over my uniform and asked for my servants to drop me off at the training centre where my examination was being held. Even though I still had half an hour before my allotted time, I didn't want to be late.
The examiners had to test over 1 000 000 applicants from all across the human domain. According to reports, in New Blackwell, there were almost 30 000 applicants.
Missing your slot is a major inconvenience to them and you would be skipped, missing your chance to enter Central High.
My servants dropped me a short distance away from the training centre and walked the rest of the way.
There were other applicants outside waiting to be called in. My allotted time was 4:00 pm and it was 3:40 pm so I leaned on a tree and started reading a book I brought with me.
"Attention everyone! If you are in the 4:00 pm time slot, please come with me. I repeat once again, applicants in the 4:00 pm time slot, come with me."
I looked up from my book and noticed it was 3:55. I followed the examiner inside along with 20 others.
"Ralph Walker... check. Please go in."
I waited in line and soon it was my turn. I showed them my identification.
"Amina Moria... good...wait! Moria? Are you somehow related to Umbra Moria?"
"Yes, he's my grandfather. Now can we move on?"
I sighed. I tended not to reveal my last name because they would immediately connect me with my grandfather. It was always an inconvenience.
"Um... yes. Please come in Ms Amina."
I sat in the waiting room and waited for my name to be called. Everyone's eyes were on me. They must've heard about me being related to Umbra Moria so they were surprised.
However, they were too nervous to say anything leaving an awkward atmosphere. But the tension was soon broken.
"Ralph Walker, please enter the testing room."
A person's name was called over the loudspeaker. He hurried over to the door and entered the room.
We were told we only had 5 minutes to prove ourselves and delaying entering the room would count towards those 5 minutes. They had to go through over 3000 applicants individually after all.
One by one everyone was called until it was my turn.
"Amina Moria, please enter the testing room."
I got up and entered the room. Inside was a man with his hands behind his back. He looked mentally exhausted and extremely tired.
Though that was to be expected. Even though he was B rank, standing and testing applicants on end would be taxing for him.
"You look very tired. Are you sure you'll be fine to face me?"
"Hahaha, guess I can't hide it. As expected as the daughter of two S ranks and the granddaughter of Umbra Moria."
"I guess you know me."
He smirked.
"I was quite excited when I saw your name for this time slot. I heard the youngest main branch of the Moria family was extremely talented. I am tired of fighting weaklings who can barely fight."
"Hope I don't disappoint then."
"That's enough chit-chat."
I immediately grabbed my folded weapon on my back and arranged it to the bow configuration. I pulled back the string as an arrow constructed from mana formed.
My eyes glowed as I activated my {Hawk Eyes}.
