Chapter 69 - Quick Steps

The right side of the cavalry began to turn around while the left side began to cover for them. The enemy archers began to fire at will and some soldiers were hit by the projectiles, but they were a minor number.

The group quickly dashed at top speed toward the walls, but soon they turned to the side and headed toward the north of the wall. The enemies in the area only noticed that when the back of their group was about to disappear in the distance…

"Keep up the pace! We won't have to speed up once the next battle starts!" Kennil shouted.

It took the group two minutes to cross the northern side of the bridge, and during that time, Gaius looked to the sides and made sure that the scouts there wouldn't be able to reach the Western side…. It was impossible for them to outrun horses, but they could have other methods of communication.

The group confirmed that the assassin-like warriors on the western side of the battlefield were caught off guard when they reached that area… they were fighting two armies of infantrymen five hundred meters away from the walls, while their camps were two kilometers meters away. For a moment, even though they were a force that didn't fight in groups, they reacted the same way when they saw the cavalry approaching… they froze completely.

"Kill them all!" Kennil shouted and Gaius felt the back of his hair standing when he felt the bloodlust spreading in the area.

"WOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!"

It felt like the soldiers around had become beasts completely taken by rage. Even though they were his allies, Gaius felt a bit worried about fighting side by side with such madmen… he didn't know if the so-called Berserk rage of Vikings was like that, but he imagined that it was like that…

The enemies tried to run away from the area since they knew that they would be in a dire spot if their right flank was attacked by the cavalry… it would be worse if they surrounded them. Some of the fifteen hundred enemies would escape, but the vast majority would be decimated.

"Holy shit… those guys run fast!" Gaius furrowed his eyebrows when he saw the enemies equipping away their knives and then inclining their bodies forward to run as fast as possible.

It was the famous ninja run and with that, they could run at sixty kilometers per hour while ignoring every deformation on the ground… Gaius wondered if he could do the same, even with his status, but that was another question for another time. Perhaps he would fall with his face on the ground and eat some dust. Perhaps he would even look more silly than he already looks.

The enemies ran all at once and managed to cover five hundred meters before the cavalry reached them. Those guys sure looked useful for sneaky activities, so Gaius didn't hesitate in firing arrows at the back of their heads.

Since he thought that it would be easy to kill them like that, Gaius did things in a half-assed way, but he soon fixed himself when he found the enemies blocking his mana arrows with their knives…

"That reaction speed…" Gaius furrowed his eyebrows when he saw the enemies grabbing their knives and repelling the projectiles in one blurry motion. "No holding back…"

“Where those guys train to reach such high levels…” Gaius thought before attacking again.

After confirming their parameters, Gaius summoned and fired numerous spinning mana arrows. Some enemies foolishly tried to block the attacks, but their knives were pierced alongside their necks. Each kill granted Gaius five thousand points of experience and since he didn’t have to watch for anyone, he killed them indiscriminately.

Gaius checked his status for a moment and then frowned. He killed around twenty enemies already, but his skill only reached level five… still, after checking things once again, he saw that Silent Step also gained levels. He couldn't understand that now, but he was going to learn things eventually.

"Very suspicious, Relia…" Gaius furrowed his eyebrows.

Quick Steps: passively increase your running speed by three percent per level. Stamina consumption increases at the same rate.

It wasn't a bad skill, but it was a bit bland… Gaius liked the idea of running faster, but he would have to use more stamina. Lately, he was enjoying a lot of passive skills… Photosynthesis and Brute Strength were quite something.

While he was having those thoughts, Gaius didn't stop attacking, he focused on hitting those far ahead who were approaching the enemy's camp while the others attacked the closest ones. He only stopped when a few of the assassin soldiers turned around and jumped to attack Kennil all at once… Gaius filled their heads with mana arrows and stopped them, though.

While he kept attacking like that, Gaius noticed some suspicious movements in the enemy's camp. They should have a few thousand soldiers there, but the people there weren't moving and at the same time, Gaius could see something beyond their camp approaching while raising a small dust curtain.

"Commander, something is approaching," Gaius said and clicked his tongue when Kennil didn't hear him… he was too focused on killing the enemies. "Commander! Something is approaching! You dumbfuck!"

Kennil only heard the last part, so he looked at Gaius as if the recruit had lost his mind, but then he looked ahead when Gaius pointed to it.

"... I can't see anything," Kennil tried to focus his eyes, but he didn't see anything.

It couldn't be helped since whatever Gaius saw was several kilometers away, but they were approaching fast… if it was another force of quick-legged warriors it would be fine, but it didn't seem that it was the case…

"Kill them all, but don't chase them too far!" Kennil shouted.

Reaching the enemy's camp and destroying them wasn't possible with their numbers. The infantry on their side couldn't keep up with them, after All. Even if they could, Kennil soon confirmed that what Gaius said was right and that new force probably wasn't going to let them do so…

"It seems that they also have some tricks on this side as well… these guys, just how much prepared they came for this?" Kennil clenched his teeth. "Retreat, we are done here!"

In a matter of seconds, around half of the enemies were killed… seven hundred assassin-type warriors… unfortunately, they were disciplined enough to take a bunch of the enemies with them once they realized their deaths… around seventy riders lost their lives on those suicidal attacks.

"Give the orders for the scouts to gather information on that new force…" Kennil declared. "At this point in time, we can tell that the enemies are several steps ahead of us… unless we truly gather some real Intel from their forces, we won't achieve anything."

While Kennil was giving those orders, Gaius decided to contact Relia… She needed to give some answers. Perhaps he should talk with Angela too, but it was pretty clear that she would only give half answers or no answers at all.

“Fuck it… how long is this stupid war going to last?” Gaius thought.
