"What are upturned eyes, Mama?" Gaius insisted.
"Hah… sometimes I forget that you aren’t even two years old," Kaira said and then facepalmed. "Regardless, you didn’t keep your promise, so you won’t be leaving the house for a few days."
Gaius was fine with that, and he could wait a few days now that he had reached a new goal. He only couldn’t stand it if his mother took away his cell phone. How could he live without his dose of dopamine every ten seconds? Regardless, he realized that the slime had already leveled up, and he decided to increase its magic and wisdom to make it fight even more.
"Loads of massive amounts of experience, delicious," Gaius thought. "Let's see... can I have more than one slime as long they are of different types? Maybe there are other variations..."
Although he couldn't leave the house, Gaius recalled that he could kill time by using Observe. Naturally, the closest person to him was his mother, so he used the spell on Kaira.
(Kaira Lv 08)
"That is just too little information… and the spell is already at level one," Gaius thought while frowning. "In any case, it doesn’t look like Mother fought or trained that much, so it’s possible for people to level up in this world by doing other things, huh."
(Zairus Lv 33)
"What is wrong, Gaius?" Zairus asked when he arrived. "Did you do something that made your mother angry? Sorry, but that’s a problem I don’t want to solve for you. This will be a good lesson: don’t make women angry. Even if you are right, you are wrong, so just apologize. Logic is a thing that only exists in the minds of men, not women."
Gaius learned that a long time ago. He basically never won when he argued with his sister, and when he said anything too sharp and almost won, he lost when she used her secret weapon: tears. You can never win when they use that... it is a technique that can't be blocked, it always hits and causes true damage.
In any case, it seemed that Zairus was really strong… Since he didn’t need parameters like magic and resistance, his strength and endurance should be insanely high. That’s why he has a problem against demons that use magic…
Gaius wondered if normal people level up by training or by getting older and if they also gained five points per level like him… it would take a while before he could confirm that.
Now that the slime was hunting for him, Gaius’ experience bar was increasing quite fast. Since the slime got half of the experience, it couldn’t be helped, but Gaius leveled up two days later… and two days after that, he leveled up again.
"Now, this is unexpected," Angela said, visibly surprised after seeing Gaius so often. "I thought you were lazier than this."
"Your words certainly cut deep, my lady," Gaius said. "What did I do to make you think that?"
"The color of your spirit shows that you are nervous. If that weren’t true, you wouldn’t have any reason to be nervous," Angela said.
"I won’t deny it, but you won’t hear me admitting it," Gaius said. "Also, it looks like I didn’t have any other choice aside from working hard. Being in the body of a toddler is already difficult enough. I don’t want to be bounced by someone else’s nonsense once I can be my own person in this world."
"Fair enough. Putting that aside, what do you think of the demons?" Angela asked. "They don’t look as cute as you imagined, do they?"
Gaius wanted to hear some important information, but it was fine to entertain Angela a bit. He had the feeling that she was quite lonely in that place… once he gets more demons under his control, he probably wouldn’t mind letting her ride the horse or play with the hawk and bird to kill time.
"I don’t know that many yet, but they sure look different than expected…" Gaius replied. "They were like… it’s hard to point out."
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
"Maybe that’s another mystery of the world you need to unveil," Angela said. "Nevertheless, you found and began to hunt them sooner than expected."
"You saw the slime here for a while. What did you think of it?" Gaius asked.
"I cannot answer that question," Angela shook her head.
That confirmed that the demons were more than just a mystery that Gaius had to unveil… it was something more related to the world and the history of the world than Gaius probably could think of.
"I will deal with that eventually, but I guess it will take a while," Gaius said. "Right now, I’m planning to deal with something closer to me."
"Right. Still, you shouldn’t go overboard. At least, that’s my opinion," Angela said. "If you focus too much on one thing, you’ll lose sight of others."
Gaius only had time to nod after hearing that and then woke up in his bed. While their talks didn’t last long, he was starting to look forward to them… still, he couldn’t get too excited and let her notice it, even if it was nice to have someone who knew all his secrets.
"Let’s see now, my next goal shall be…" Gaius thought while getting up. "I guess I should just wait for another chance to defeat another demon."
Until Kaira’s anger calmed down, Gaius focused on training his magic… unfortunately, there wasn’t much he could do aside from sharpening his current skills since he failed at learning other applications of magic.
"Maybe I should try to learn other things based on what I already know thanks to the system… I really don’t know how Observe and Poison Bullet work, after all," Gaius thought.
Trying to study Poison Bullet at home was difficult, but Observe was completely fine. In fact, it didn’t take long for him to understand a few things after using it. He felt some mana being projected on his eyes, and the mana analyzed the target’s body… that was all he understood. He had no idea how his mana could read the parameters of the target that easily.
"I guess this spell is a lot more complex than I expected… even though it was supposed to be something so simple in books and games," Gaius rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
Over the next few weeks, Gaius studied the spell carefully and eventually learned a few other things. For example, while it looked like the spell worked by analyzing the strength and weakness of the target, Gaius could only see the numbers exactly because of the system. When he managed to use the spell without the system, he could only see an aura of mana around the target. If it was intense or bigger than him...
Before he could pull that off, Gaius also realized that the mana in his body had to be used in certain areas for them to work, like Observe. It seemed like support spells worked like that, so Gaius began to practice that use.
It was hard at the beginning. It was also hard to measure how much mana he would need to use. Still, when Gaius managed to pull it off the first time, he felt quite strong in his fists… he tried to check the boost in power and punched the ground. Gaius almost got a scolding when his mother saw the fist mark on the wood… but she assumed that the wood was just damaged.
"It looks like I can burn mana to boost the strength of my body… but that single punch consumed one-third of my mana," Gaius thought. "It wasn’t as strong as a spinning mana arrow, but it could be useful. If I can use this alongside a weapon, then who knows what I can do with it?"
Around that time, Kaira’s anger finally settled, and she got a bit worried since Gaius didn’t seem to mind staying at home that much… he was that quiet and focused on things that she didn’t know about, after all. Gaius finally had the chance to look for more summoned creatures. However, it looked like Zairus had other plans for him.
"I have some gifts for you, Gaius," Zairus said while carrying a wooden sword and shield.
"Isn’t this a bit too soon for him?" Kaira asked when she realized Zairus’ intentions by giving Gaius such toys.
"Despite our worries, he’s a kid full of vigor, and since there isn’t much to do around here, I figured we could use that for his future," Zairus replied, showing a complicated expression. "Believe me, I wish he didn’t have to learn how to fight, but some rumors are spreading about the lord… even if it’s just a bit, Gaius should learn how to defend himself."
Gaius also believed that it was a bit too soon for him to use such toys since he could barely run with his new body. Even if he could, the finesse of his movements was extremely limited. Could he gain any experience when he probably couldn’t move and swing a wooden sword the right way?
"Do you want this, Gaius?" Zairus asked. "If you do, Papa can play warriors with you when I get home."
"Yes, Father," Gaius replied.
"Why don’t you say, 'Yes, Papa'?" Zairus asked.
Gaius felt like saying "hell no" to make his point… that would be too much, as expected. In any case, it was too embarrassing. Gaius could only bear calling his mother Mama, and that was the limit.
