Chapter 36 - Support

Although his father looked like the king of depression a few hours ago, now he looked like a possessed warrior. He wasn't alone. Many of the veterans began to fight with no regard for their lives and started to overpower the enemy's army with their fighting spirit alone, even though they were outnumbered three to one.

Although they had thousands more enemies to fight, no one was thinking about pacing themselves. They were fighting as if they were going to die, so they might as well take down as many enemies with them. Gaius knew that this kind of thought could become a weapon, but it was also a double-edged sword.

Some of the villagers began to get cut here and there, but that didn’t stop them from fighting as recklessly as they could. Still, it didn’t take long for some of them to notice their deaths finally approaching. A certain spearman impaled the throat of an enemy, but when he was pulling his spear out, he saw another enemy approaching, thrusting their weapon toward his head. He couldn’t react in time, so he only clenched his teeth. He wasn’t going to die instantly, so he was determined to endure the mortal pain and then take his killer with him. But before the motion could be completed, a barely noticeable high-pitched sound echoed in the area, and then an arrow pierced the enemy’s head.

In the next moment, a guard with a shield was suddenly knocked down by the charge of two warriors. While he put himself behind his shield, he knew that the two enemies were quickly approaching to finish him off. He couldn’t block both of them, so he just braced himself. Until the two enemies suddenly stopped moving, and their heads trembled for a moment before they fell dead. The fallen guard didn’t even see what hit them.

It didn’t take long for Gaius to run out of arrows since he was trying to cover everyone around. All those people fighting close to his father were following his leadership, so he assumed that they were his friends. Still, he could only do so much with arrows. It was time to make his choice and he couldn't second-guess himself any longer.

“No holding back now… and this is my chance to increase the size of my army exponentially,” Gaius thought.

Gaius’s minions that were attacking the back of the camps were leveling up a bunch of times, so he was getting a bunch of parameters as well. Thanks to that, he was able to fire magic bullets like a machine gun. As expected of the skill that he trained for several years, it was a lot faster than firing arrows even though it wasn’t a proper skill.

“That is what you get from having low magic resistance… not like you know a way to train it,” Gaius thought while he was pointing his last arrow around and firing the magic bullets instead. “Hey, guys, I am selling tickets to Angela’s room. You can buy it for the low, low price of completely free!”

Angela would probably have something to say about that if Gaius had said it out loud. Nevertheless, some people frowned since it looked like Gaius wasn’t firing any arrows, and they couldn’t see the small magic bullets. But they had better things to do in that situation aside from paying attention to him.

Regardless, thanks to his hard work, the first army was wiped out, and Gaius only saw two or three soldiers on his side falling. All of the people that were close to his father had survived. But the second wave of enemies was already fifty meters away.

“Little master, just endure it for a bit longer. I am almost done with their warehouses of supplies and weapons,” Relia suddenly said.

She was almost done with the weapons and supplies of the main camp. They still had two others. It was hard to imagine that they would endure that for long. Even Gaius was starting to run out of mana, and he was using his level-up points to increase his Wisdom as well. Besides, even if they held the enemies down, the right flank would still be in trouble in a couple of minutes.

"Someone give me some arrows! Actually, bring a lot of them!" Gaius shouted once he checked the level of his Bow Mastery and noticed that it had reached sixty already.

Although he wasn't leading anyone, a lot of kids who were on support duty approached Gaius and put some quivers behind him. While they didn't notice that Gaius was using magic, everyone noticed that the villagers close to his father were mostly fine. Gaius was looking after them, and that was clear as day.

Regardless, Gaius forgot about that and fired the new arrows that he got like a machine gun as well. He thought that Bow Mastery would only affect the damage he could cause, but his firing speed practically doubled. He only had to aim for a split second before firing his arrows without any hesitation. Thanks to him, the second enemy army already had a massive hole in their formation even before they attacked the villagers.

Zairus used that chance to advance on their ranks and then began to destroy the enemy's formations even more. Those in front of him tried to stop Zairus, but they were split in two. At that point in time, Gaius could only think that his father had a skill of some sort since he was getting stronger the more he fought. Still, he didn't want that skill since he knew the requirements necessary.

"Don't wander too far off… stupid old man," Gaius thought while he was adjusting his aim to help his father, who was quickly getting surrounded by the enemies.

Gaius began to fire the arrows while he approached the front line. His father created a hole in their formations as well, so that had been easy for Gaius. Despite that, the villagers nearby were having an easy time fighting since Zairus made himself the focus of the enemy's army.

Even with his magic, Gaius was unable to protect his father as much as he wanted from that distance. Moreover, he was starting to get scratched by the enemies left and right.

"Common sense isn’t common anymore… I told you, don’t wander too far off from our ranks!" Gaius clenched his fists after he dropped his bow and grabbed a spear from the ground near a corpse. "I guess there is only one way to make that stupid old man realize the severity of his actions."

Zairus had leveled up a lot in the last few days, to the point that Gaius thought that everyone could become stupidly strong in that world thanks to wars. Few people could survive a battle of that scale, though.

That all didn’t matter. What mattered was the fact that Gaius approached his father to cover for him. In terms of raw strength, he was already at the level of his father, but Gaius lacked combat experience, and it was time to gain that.

When several enemies surrounded Zairus and planned to attack him at the same time, Gaius suddenly jumped with all his might and spun in the air. He had no idea why he did that, but he trusted his instincts. Thanks to that, he passed above three of the enemies, and when he was about to land, he swung the spear and cut the throats of three enemies. At the same time, the butt of the weapon hit the back of his father.

“Ouch… what was that for?” Zairus suddenly said and then opened his eyes widely when he saw Gaius charging toward another enemy.

Zairus calmed down a little and then jumped backward when two enemies tried to stab him. In the corner of his field of vision, he saw his son thrusting his spear forward several times in a row before impaling the throat of one of the enemy's soldiers. His accuracy was surreal. With the first two strikes, Gaius hit the hands of the enemy, and when the pain made him flinch, he went for the finishing blow.

The three remaining enemies decided to take Gaius more seriously and charged at him while raising their swords. But Zairus stepped forward in a swift motion and separated their upper bodies from their lower halves. He was back to the game and with a cooled head, Gaius would have an easier time looking after him. Hopefully...
