Chapter 32 - Powering UP

Those were some crazy instincts… Gaius only checked her parameters, and she was able to tell that he was checking on her. Regardless, Gaius decided to ignore the question.

"We don't have many options here, so we will have to rely on your tools and skills," Gaius declared. "You should investigate the enemy's territories while invisible and then look for the base of their leaders. Assess their strength and then get rid of some of the enemies before reporting to me. I will create a diversion for you to be able to do it safely."

"The enemies' leaders probably won't be a problem, but they must have some bodyguards that are strong," Relia declared. "With my skills and current strength, dealing with those guys will be hard."

"If you confirm that, your second order still stands: get rid of some of the soldiers and scare them to death with your stealth skills," Gaius declared.

"Roger that," Relia said.

Gaius had assumed that in normal places, commanders wouldn't be strong warriors… they would be sons of rich and influential people. Still, their guards would be some tough nuts to crack. It was the same as usual, so there was no point in thinking too much about it.

Confusion began to spread among the enemy ranks when, around noon, a giant desert wolf suddenly appeared and attacked the left side of the right flank… they finally saw one of the creatures that attacked them the previous night, but they didn't feel much better knowing about it. They didn't have time to since, on the other side, some soldiers were killed, and when the corpses were checked, they noticed that their throats had been cut.

"She is doing this without hesitation… although she became a mother, she didn't lose her instincts as a warrior," Gaius thought. "How scary… maybe that became her way to vent her anger and frustration. Better not to talk about it."

In any case, the enemy's right flank was one kilometer away from their camp, and even from far away, Gaius could see the chaos spreading there. Even in just three minutes, Relia had the chance to kill three random soldiers, and she also claimed that she took some good weapons from them to give to the newbies.

Gaius wanted to make the same thing happen several times more, but the guards on the enemy's camp were tightened, and Relia only attacked a couple more times… three more times, but at least she got rid of twenty soldiers. The enemies didn't think of retreating, though… those losses didn't seem that high considering their base of soldiers.

"Someone once said that war, in simple terms, is: You have stuff I want, so I'm going to kill you, or you don't have the stuff that I want; I'm going to kill you anyway for the fun of it…" Gaius thought. "I am impressed that people can sacrifice others that easily and not have second thoughts when their soldiers die like ants. Maybe I still have some modernity in my mindset since I can't imagine myself doing the same… still, living in this world for many years like this, being told that this is normal... perhaps even I would have become like that."

In any case, night soon came, and the enemies began to move… Gaius was a bit worried since his father and many others only took a short nap in the afternoon once they realized that the enemies wanted to continue with the night raids.

In the end, Zairus didn’t find a perfect solution for how they could use the archers, so he only asked the members of the frontline how much they trusted their kids who had good archery skills and told them to bring them close to watch their backs with their bows… that would put a lot of pressure on the kids, but at least the parents and grandparents only chose those that were almost fifteen for that… so they had only thirty archers to help the frontline. Naturally, Gaius was one of them.

Stolen story; please report.

Zairus and the other leaders of the villagers split their forces into three lines of one hundred soldiers and made them guard the front and the sides of their formation… it looked like they were planning to use only one hundred soldiers at the start of the battle, while the enemies were sending almost one thousand for the first confrontation… it was a rather risky plan.

“The enemies are preparing to wipe out your side all at once, little master,” Relia said. “They are only showing a fraction of them, but the others are preparing to join the battle as well.”

Gaius began to prepare a bunch more quivers for him to carry when he heard that… things were going to get nasty on the second night. Once again, he was wondering if he should do more aside from just covering for his father… showing his magic was his last option, but it seemed more and more appealing at the moment.

“I will watch the enemy commander of that flank, but I already confirmed that he has ten powerful guards and I can’t get rid of more than one without revealing myself,” Relia added.

“You don’t have to… I will send my archers to attack the back of the enemy's camp,” Gaius furrowed his eyebrows while thinking if that would work. “That will cause another commotion… if the guards move to check that area, you can move and target their leader, only him. Don’t do anything stupid if they show a suspicious opening.”

“All right, little master,” Relia said. “Still, for someone so young, you sure are cautious and don’t like much attention. I know that you are someone special considering that you work with Angela, but I bet that even at your age, you could accomplish a lot more if you didn’t try to hold back.”

Gaius knew that, but he also knew that he would get a lot more problems as well… he would rather live in peace now and focus on building his foundation instead of letting the desire for fame and power control him. Doing fun things was better than worrying about the enemies that he might make along the way.

“Your opinion is rooted in stupidity, so it doesn’t matter,” Gaius said. “Again, don’t do anything foolish.”

“Ouch, so harsh,” Relia said and then shrugged.

Relia was getting too chummy lately, so Gaius decided to punish her a bit for it. Still, he had to forget about that when the enemies began to charge toward them.

“Keep your positions and raise your shields!” Zairus shouted. “Group two and three! Be ready to deploy!”

The group on the front raised their shields and their spears; only a few of them, like Zairus, had swords, but they didn’t feel that complicated on the holes of their formations… the groups on the sides mostly had shields and spears… even though that wasn't their main weapon of choice.

"It looks like most people here aren't that confident in their skills or they either want to increase their chances of survival no matter what…" Gaius thought while putting the quivers a few meters behind Zairus.

Zairus turned around and saw Gaius calm as ever, but the kids that were almost two times older than him were sweating cold… none of them hesitated in coming to help the frontline, but it looked like they were still afraid of failure. Nevertheless, Zairus was feeling more confident knowing that his son would watch his back, but he forgot about that when the enemies began to roar…

Gaius learned his lesson the previous night; he looked beyond the front line of the enemies to see what they were planning… and he saw it… a second wave of enemies moving toward them even before they first made contact.

"No point in holding back now…" Gaius thought and opened his status screen.

Gaius didn't hesitate in using the ninety points he had saved… he increased his strength, dexterity, and perception by thirty points each, and he felt his senses being enhanced… when his focus was perfect, it felt like he could see the enemies one hundred meters away as if they were only twenty meters away.

When Gaius nocked the first arrow, he also aimed and fired it in the blink of an eye… the dexterity was working perfectly, and the strength as well, since the arrow pierced the skull of the enemy and killed him. Things had started again...
