Chapter 04 - One Per Type

When Gaius went to sleep, he found himself in front of Angela again, without his body.

"Hello, Gaius. Enjoying your new life? Angela asked while smiling "I guess so… It is quite something knowing that you can put out that much shit and the others will always clear it for you in your earlier years," Gaius replied after he checked that he was in his new body. "I am thankful for my parents and my old parents for taking care of me like that. Still, I suppose that isn’t a topic you would like to hear."

"I don't mind. I don't have much to do here, so any topic is agreeable to me," Angela said and smiled.

"Well… whatever. People have all sorts of hobbies," Gaius said. "Anyway, why did you summon me? There isn't much I can do as a one-month-old baby."

"I didn't summon you. A connection between this place and your spiritual body was opened since you leveled up," Angela explained.

"Why?" Gaius asked.

"I can't answer that question," Angela replied.

"Figures… No point in worrying about things beyond my control. That will only be stressful," Gaius said. "Anyway, did you say something before I left? After you told me my name?"

"No, I didn't," Angela replied.

"Really? Reaaaallly?" Gaius asked.

"Yes," Angela replied while showing her usual blank expression.

"Well, I guess that is fine then… Is there anything else that you can tell me?" Gaius asked.

“I guess I need to warn you about a few things regarding the power you have,” Angela said while slightly looking to the side. “Do you know where the creatures that you are able to summon go when they aren’t active or haven’t been summoned yet?”

“No…” Gaius replied.

“They come here, so make sure to get as many as possible,” Angela said.

“Why?” Gaius asked. “While that is convenient for me, what do you gain from that?”

“That, I can’t answer,” Angela closed her eyes and replied. “With that being said, you need to be careful. In this place, they won’t have to eat or do any of the other things living beings need to do. However, time passes here. Do you understand that?”

“Kind of… If I kill something or someone that is smarter than animals, they might go crazy in here, right?” Gaius asked.

“They might become violent, but they won’t be able to do much since I am here. However, they will also know about your powers and reveal your secrets and my existence,” Angela explained. “You can force them to obey you, but the more powerful they become, the tougher they will be and the more mana you will have to use. So, you should build a good relationship with them since you might send some enemies here in the future.”

“I can’t imagine myself killing anyone now, much less becoming good friends with those that I had to kill for one reason or another… Is this world that dangerous?” Gaius asked.

“It isn’t if you decide to behave like cattle,” Angela replied. “Also, the mysteries that you will have to unveil for me might be dangerous and troublesome for others, so you will end up making enemies in one way or another.”

“Hmm… I suppose I just have to accept that since I owe you one for giving me a second chance,” Gaius said. “Anything else I need to know?”

“Yes, but we are running out of time. You will be back to your body soon,” Angela said.

“I feel like this communication method is like the times I tried to talk with people without enough mobile data…” Gaius said. “See you next time.”

When Gaius woke up, he was back in his body. It seemed that Angela still had a few things to say to him, and he could only meet her once he slept after leveling up. Right now, that process was really slow, but it couldn't be helped.

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

"I need to make the ant grow bigger enough to be able to bring some half-dead insects here and hope that no one will find and kill it," Gaius thought. "Aside from that, my only option is to wait a few months until I can crawl around the house."

Still, it looked like that might take an even longer time… The reason for that was the fact that Gaius' parents thought he was too frail since they thought he was born dead and, by some miracle, was revived. Hence, they never took him out of his room, much less out of the house. Gaius felt like he was in prison and couldn't take a step away…

"It would have been better if I had any other way to kill time aside from looking at the system's screens, and I am bored of doing that since the changes are minimal," Gaius thought.

Gaius wondered if he should be able to climb down from his cradle if he increased his strength and endurance… Even if that were true, he still didn't have full control over his body. So, he needed to wait a few months in one way or another. His only remaining option was to study the language of that world, but he didn’t die and was reincarnated to study again; that would be simply insane. Hopefully, he won’t be stuck in that world as well in a nightmarish hellscape called the public education system.

The next time Gaius leveled up, it happened after another month, and during that time, he met Angela again and learned that his summons could exist for as long as he lived… He didn't know the lifespan of people from that world, but it wasn't too much to assume that his summons were semi-immortal.

The next time it happened was two months later… As expected, leveling up by hunting ants was a very slow process. It was time to move on with that, but the ant was only the size of Gaius' fingers.

On their third encounter, Angela told Gaius that even though they might be on the same level, the difference in strength between a level three human and a level three ant was obvious, so it was only natural that they couldn't hunt anything bigger than them.

Around the same time, Gaius began to understand almost completely the conversation that his parents had, and right now, they were wondering if they should take him out of the house now and then since he never got sick or caused problems in those four months. Also, he could lift his upper body and sit in the cradle instead of lying down all the time.

"Hmm, it seems that Gaius has gotten stronger and recovered completely…" Zairus said while scratching his huge beard.

"I am still worried that his condition might worsen if he gets tired," Kaira said, showing an expression of concern on her whole face.

"I know, but we can't raise him to be a sheltered kid. The attacks of demons are increasing day by day, and the future is uncertain…" Zairus said while furrowing his eyebrows and scratching the back of his head.

It felt like Zairus wanted to say something else, but he didn't since it was probably something too depressing. Gaius got worried… Angela's warnings were starting to click in his head as well. He had to plan for some problems ahead… He needed to know them first, though.

"All right… It is time to be a bit reckless," Gaius thought.

The word demons was a bit worrying, so Gaius felt a lot eager to do something to make things more efficient for him.

When night came, and his parents were sleeping, Gaius decided to use the status points that he had saved. He did well in just using five since the increase in health made him feel a bit weird… Strong and full of life.

In any case, while using his sheets, Gaius created a rope and tied it to the side of the cradle before he tried to climb down. While he had the grip strength to go down slowly, it hurt his hands a bit… It was probably because of the lack of endurance.

When Gaius landed, he was unable to stand on his feet… His legs weren't that developed yet, and that was probably something that endurance or dexterity could help with, so there was no point in worrying about it. He just began to crawl.

"Even if they are insects, as long as I can summon several of them, it should be better than nothing," Gaius thought while leaving the room and then noticing that only that room had candles. "The other parts of the house are completely dark… I can't look for anything this way…"

The brightness in the room wasn’t that good either, and Gaius was bound to miss a lot of small things since his eyes weren't that good either… He had heard that babies only start to see well after six months, after all.

Fortunately, Gaius found some ants after not so long since the kitchen was nearby. However, he didn't get any notification from the system…

"Don't tell me… The system doesn't recognize this one and the other ant as different beings…" Gaius thought and then facepalmed. "You should have told me that earlier, Angela…"

Giving up now would be a waste of effort, even though Gaius probably could search on other nights. It is weird that Gaius didn’t find any flies until now, but it was hard to imagine that he could be fast enough to smash one… With his strength and dexterity being low, maybe insects weren't his forte right now.

Gaius found out later that the ant was connected to the level-up system but wouldn't increase the experience for the next level. Since it wasn't working, he had to focus on leveling up using ants.

Gaius wasn't sure what to do now, so he decided to just stay in his room. If he managed to find something useful in the kitchen, it was okay to use it in the future. The night was long and boring, so he used his free points to improve his endurance.

When Gaius woke up, he had to decide what to do next. He couldn’t really expect to do something in his current state, so he had to find a way to improve his physical strength and make use of his free points effectively.
