Chapter 19 - Differences

Gaius couldn't help but shrug. He imagined that weird rumors usually spread in times of war, but it looked like the enemies were being controlled to avoid spreading what had happened in order not to disrupt the morale of the troops.

"That guy said that the commander of the operation was supposed to arrive two days before the attack…" Gaius rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

Once he had the chance, Gaius summoned those guys at level six during the afternoon. This time, he didn't have the chance to give them clothes, so things would be rough and weird for them as they traveled to the enemy's camp. Still, that night, they didn't have to do much.

"Forget about what you saw after your death, and don't try to recall it," Gaius gave the order to his soldiers, even though they were probably going to die again.

The commander and the bows would probably arrive the next day. Stealing the bows and arrows would be as hard as finding and killing their commander, but it was something that had to be done if he wanted to break all the necessary pillars of the enemy's operation.

"... The next time I see Angela, I should ask her about this power," Gaius thought after he analyzed his parameters. "Killing people is way too efficient to gain experience… doesn't that mean that mass murderers in this world can become insanely powerful?"

While they couldn't access it, nothing said that the people of that world weren't under the influence of that system. Or at least some parts of it… Gaius thought that because while his father trained in the last few years by pushing his limits, he couldn't do that often, and yet, he leveled up a few times.

Getting on many battlefields would make him stronger faster, but Gaius wondered if it was really okay to get stronger like that… it felt way too unnatural. For the first time since a few conversations he had with Angela, Gaius wondered about her true intentions.

When night came, the enemy's camp was fully ready and waiting for another attack. The number of scouts was the same, but now they had guards with them.

Once Gaius heard that, he rubbed his chin thoughtfully. Attacking all of them at the same time without alerting the camp was no longer possible. Still, he had some options.

According to Gaius' minions, the number of scout groups was six, and each one of them had five guards with them. Since the next day reinforcements would come, they could afford to tire out some of them.

Regardless, the guards didn't have the necessary perception or dexterity to notice anything, so the scouts were still the ones doing the main job. Eventually, one of them got up and looked in the distance once he heard something, but soon the sound disappeared, and it felt like it had been the wind.

"What is wrong?" one of the heavily armed soldiers asked.

"I guess it was only the wind…" the scout said and then sat down on the grass.

As soon as that happened, the scout was hit in the head by numerous small spheres and then fell dead. The guards clicked their tongues in annoyance since they were going to pay for that failure, but first, they drew their weapons and warned the others.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

All of the groups of scouts turned in that direction and readied themselves for combat, but then one of them was suddenly bombarded by numerous wind spheres. The desert wolf did one hell of a job and hit all the enemies' heads, killing the second group before they could warn the others.

Another group of scouts was suddenly attacked by a two-meter-tall goblin, and they couldn't help but flinch in shock. The creature, armed with a large club, easily smashed three of the five people in the group, and the others ran away.

Panic began to spread in the camp, and Gaius was informed of that by his soldiers. Once that happened, he gave them the order to join the fray and get rid of another group of scouts. Since their target was busy trying to understand the situation, they were caught from behind and were unable to react.

Around that time, all of the soldiers of the camp had woken up. Even though they weren't informed by the scouts, they could tell that the enemy was attacking. They quickly readied themselves to fight, but they didn't see any enemies approaching.

"Attacking now will be hard… I will suffer some losses," Gaius rubbed his chin thoughtfully once he heard what was happening from his soldiers. "Taking down thirty more of them isn't bad, but… I need to scare them more. I can't let them think that I am scared of their numbers."

It would be a great time to attack them from above, but Gaius couldn't be there in the middle of the night… nor could his flying-summoned creatures attack from a distance.

The desert wolf and the slime were the only ones that could keep going in that situation. Their ranged attacks were powerful enough to kill the soldiers fast… but they couldn't enter the range without showing themselves.

"It can't be helped… get the weapons and armor of the enemies that you killed and retreat," Gaius ordered.

Getting overconfident and too greedy was forbidden. One needs to know when to retreat when on a winning streak… that is why you won't find millionaires who won the lotto ten years ago.

Regardless, Gaius leveled up three more times, and he was quite tired, so he went to sleep. All that leveling up would grant him some time to speak with Angela.

“Hello again,” Angela said with her usual smile when Gaius appeared in her place. “It seems you have some serious questions this time.”

“Are you sure you aren’t spying on me? There is no point in getting mad since you have even more control over my life than I have over my soldiers,” Gaius said.

“You really don’t believe me, but I guess that is to be expected. I wouldn’t trust someone who hides so many things from me either,” Angela crossed her arms and then said, “As I said, I can read the color of your soul, and that changes according to your most recent and intense thoughts. You are… how can I describe that color? The yellow of the uneasy and suspicious and deep blue of resignation and acceptance.”

“Muddy green?” Gaius asked. “I can’t say that I like that. Regardless, can you explain to me a few things about this power? I find it weird that I gain so much experience by killing humans who are twenty levels below me.”

"There are some reasons for that, and the first is that humans are more complicated creatures than most monsters," Angela raised both of her index fingers. "Imagine a human and a goblin of the same level, strength, height, and everything else. Who do you think will give you more experience? It will be the humans because of their complexity, and that makes the quality of the mana higher. Hence, you get more experience from them."

"Come to think of it, I got the system when I killed an ant… was it because it had mana?" Gaius asked. "I didn't have any because I am an alien being in this world and my vessel was dead?"

"Exactly," Angela replied while nodding several times. "I can't explain why, but this world works like that. Living beings obtain mana from the land over time and grow stronger and wiser. That applies to all creatures. When they die of natural causes, the mana returns to the land, but when they don't, a part goes to the being that took their lives."

That was mana, but the system made Gaius think that it was experience… maybe the mana that he got was the experience that the target's head took in a shape that he could absorb without the memories and experience.

"I want to know why things are like this here, but I suspect that you won't answer that," Gaius said. "Regardless, that confirms that the higher the killing count, the stronger the person here is. I suspect that being a criminal here is quite…"

"Convenient?" Angela asked while looking to the side. "They tend to get really strong and faster, but without basic training, they can only go so far, and most of them get carried away and are dealt with in the shadows. Some mercenaries and war heroes also tend to become stupidly strong and use that power and influence to build their own kingdoms."
