Chapter 67 - Offering Terror

Gaius was also thinking that the woman was trying to make him pity her for whatever reason… Gaius forgot about that since he was busy with all the preparations, but the idea that the people were being assassinated in the city was still in the back of his mind.

Assassins are good at using poison and so they were good at using medicine, so that might be a trap that will cause his death.

"Surprisingly enough, you don't look hurt like the other soldiers, even though there are a bunch of recruits like you that also are hurt…" The redhead said while studying Gaius for a while. "Anyway, I hope that you don't get hurt and have to use the medicine. Have a good night."

The redhead left just like that without telling her name and she wondered why Gaius felt like calling her weird nicknames.

"I don't want to use this, but I guess I can't test this on the soldiers inside the walls…" Gaius rubbed his chin thoughtfully while checking the smell of the medicine once more. "Maybe I should use it on my soldiers who are quite stubborn, there are a few who have full loyalty… the heavy cavalry guys are particularly stubborn, after all."

“Their levels increased, but their loyalty decreased… I will pass the medicine to Reila after making them work hard, I hope it stings a lot,” Gaius thought while smirking.

Gaius went to sleep and once again, he had some good hours of rest. He was starting to get used to waking up before the sun showed up, but he felt a bit sluggish without feeling the sunlight.

"The soldiers nearby aren't making much progress thanks to the war since the enemies went defensive and they can only hunt so much, so they aren't leveling up a lot…" Gaius thought while checking everyone's parameters. "I armed them for battle, but not for wars… let's see what they can do to improve in that regard."

After thinking for a while, Gaius thought that the engineers might help him solve that problem… they will take some time recovering their skills, and power level, but they should be able to help the others with their creations. It would be great if they could make things like crossbows…

“It shouldn’t be a weapon that doesn’t exist in this world,” Gaius thought while he was heading to Kennil’s tent. “In any case, this is only the second time, I am tired of fighting other people’s wars… the next step should be how to avoid this kind of situation… the results of this war should give me some edge for that… In that case, I should…”

Gaius had an idea of what he should do… but he will have to work extra hard in that war, he will have to dirty his hands a lot more as well. Considering how often wars were taking place, it wouldn’t be hard to make that happen… it would be time-consuming, though.

“We received reports that most of the enemy's armies are moving away from the walls a bit, but the scouts also noticed some of them moving around, they might have prepared some more traps to make us chase them,” Kennil said. “What do you think we should do in this situation?”

“We can’t take our time approaching them, so I guess we will have to take our chances,” Gaius replied.

“You are right, but we can’t charge ahead disregarding the traps,” Kennil said while he grabbed his spear on the corner of the tent. “The enemies will be waiting for another earlier assault, and while we can’t give them the time to repair the siege weapons. We will depart two hours after sunlight and attack the archers… the northern side of the wall is free, the enemies only have some scouts there and we will use that to our advantage."

It looked like Kennil wanted to teach a few things to Gaius. He was fine with that since despite all the lessons in tactics, and about the history of the wars in their state, improvisation was always important to surprise the enemies.

"... After attacking the archers, we will head North and then East and attack those suspicious soldiers with daggers," Kennil said after waiting for a while for Gaius to understand that himself. "Those guys tend to appear on the southern wall and kill a lot of our allies out of nowhere. Infantry, cavalry… sometimes they climb the walls without being noticed and kill some archers."

"They sure are skilled," Gaius said without showing much emotion.

"Our cavalry is quite strong, but not that skilled, so we'll be counting on you to get rid of them as much as possible," Kennil added.

Gaius saw that coming hundreds of miles away… he was already expecting that he would have jobs like that where he would be the damage dealer. It was also a part of his goal to make him more useful for the state and to make them do everything necessary to stay on his good side… but now that it was happening, he felt a bit annoyed.

"My mood has been a mess in the past few days…" Gaius thought while trying to hold back a sigh and following Kennil. "I am more of a low-key type of guy, but I guess I am not destined for that here… let's just embrace this, though."

Gaius wondered why Angela didn't appear in his dreams last night… he leveled up and had a few things to ask her, after all. She couldn't be busy just staring at the souls that Gaius sent to her place in the last few days.

There was a chance that she was avoiding him and his questions, while she tried to keep her cool most of the time. It was obvious that Angela didn't have much experience interacting with others, so she tended to get carried away and do things that she wouldn't do if she had kept her cool. Maybe that was another mystery that Gaius had to solve…

When they reached the eastern side of the wall, Gaius frowned a bit since he didn't recognize half of the riders that were there… They were people from that state. They didn't fight together until now, but they no longer had the luxury to avoid that and rely only on their own people.

"A joint operation, huh…" Gaius thought. "Now that I think about it, most of the people here have brown hair and eyes… I can see why the redhead stands out in a bad light for the people here."

Kennil talked with the general that was going to lead the other group of cavalry and then they confirmed what they were going to do. Gaius heard all that… for five minutes, they would work together to hunt the archers, but then Kennil's force would eventually head West to fight the assassin guys… both sides would have some infantrymen with shields to protect them, but they shouldn't last for long since their main cavalry will be on the south.

"They tend to move and help whichever side needs help the most, but they shouldn't be faster than us," Gaius thought, imagining how things would play out… they would lose a force on that side and then they would be unable to help the other… I am not used to imagining battles on a large scale like this, but I need to learn how to plan several steps ahead."

Putting that aside, Gaius felt that weird feeling of discomfort again… something was going to happen that day. He has the same feeling when they face the wrath demons. Hopefully, it won't be anything too serious, but it was hard to think anything along those lines when so many people were dying in droves with each battle.

"Their strength is the real deal, so they should be usable soon enough… I will summon them and the others tonight since the spells are almost charged," Gaius thought. “Let’s scare those guys just as much as they did to us… maybe I should keep them at a low level and summon them again and again.”

Gaius was smirking and some people saw that… it was hard to see such a bloodthirsty kid. Usually, they would be traumatized after some battles… in any case, they also saw the moment, his smirk disappeared and the expression on his face froze.
