During the rest of the day, Gaius focused on filling the gauge to summon the guys he had just killed, but not completely. He only finished the process after sparring with his father in the evening. While Zairus and Kaira were talking about the incident of the day, he did it.
"Use the cloaks to hide your appearance, and don't turn around," Gaius said, throwing on the floor some old cloaks that his mother had stored over the years for one reason or another. "Follow that creature and help it fight the demons."
The guys that he summoned were completely bound by Gaius' orders, so they quickly followed the commands, even though they were sweating bullets the whole time.
While Gaius wanted to use them as soon as possible, they wouldn't be useful at level zero and without weapons. After checking their parameters, Gaius confirmed that some people had higher basic parameters than others. For instance, Herac had more potential than Rein since all of his parameters were two points higher. As for those guys, all of their parameters were one point below Rein.
"It would be more convenient if I could teach them magic, but life isn't that easy," Gaius thought.
Regardless, Gaius had to make do with the hand he was given, and there was no point in complaining about it. So, he monitored those guys getting stronger at night after hunting some slimes and desert wolves. Then he gave them the order to rest for a bit in the morning, and in the afternoon, they began to build some wooden spears with the branches and sticks they found around. Gaius was planning to use them for sneaky attacks, so there was no need for anything fancy.
"The scouts confirmed that something happened yesterday in the enemy's camp, but they couldn't tell what it was…" Zairus said after he finished another training session with Gaius. "That isn't really important, though. What is important is the fact that two hundred more enemies arrived at their camp, and they relocated their base two kilometers closer."
"We really don't have more than five days left, huh," Kaira said while biting her nails. "No one here has experience leading others. So, it will be tough to fight such a defensive battle like this."
Zairus could only nod… all of them felt like they didn't need a leader. They didn't have good experience with people giving them orders, after all.
In any case, that conversation confirmed that Gaius had a few more days to scare the enemies. Night raids would really come in handy, but he couldn't sneak out at night…
While Gaius thought of attacking the next day, the movements in the village got a lot more intense, so he didn't have the chance to leave without being noticed.
"It can't be helped, and I will make it with those eight guys…" Gaius thought.
Gaius felt really hesitant in calling that a good thing, but he got a lot of experience when he killed those guys. So, they could get stronger faster and recover their strength if they played their hands well.
"Which of you know how your defenses on that camp work?" Gaius asked, using his mind after he made the eight guys head to that area. "... There is no use in hesitating. You will follow my commands."
Gaius heard some silence for a while, but eventually, some of them explained to him that they had several scouts camping at night at specific points around the camp. Those guys weren't good at ambushes. Their only job was to remain hidden and warn the others if they found large groups of enemies approaching since small ones wouldn't be a problem.
"Have you arrived in the area?" Gaius thought while checking the status screen of the guy he talked to earlier.
This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
"... Yes," the guy hesitantly replied.
"Your job is to kill the scouts without making a scene," Gaius declared. "Find all of them and assume positions to get rid of all of them at the same time. You have one hour to do that."
Life was getting harder since Gaius had sacrificed a lot of sleep lately. Still, one hour later, he checked and confirmed that his minions had found the scouts and assumed their positions.
Gaius gave the order for them to attack, and ten minutes later, he confirmed that the ambushes had been a success, probably because he increased their dexterity and strength a lot during the level-ups.
"Move the bodies away and then get rid of all the vestiges of the fights," Gaius ordered. "Your job isn't over yet."
Gaius could only imagine what those guys were thinking and feeling… it shouldn't be pleasant to know that they died, and someone brought them back to life just to control them and force them to fight their allies. Still, Gaius didn't feel even a bit of empathy toward them. Even though they were just soldiers following orders…
The reason for that was obvious. Even if they were only following orders, one of them could have taken the life of his father and eventually his and his mother's if he hadn't interfered. Making up his mind in that kind of situation was really easy… and Gaius didn't hesitate.
Before the people of the enemy's camp could realize what was going on, Gaius' minions finished the clean-up and were equipping themselves with the gear of the scouts. Two hours after that, a new group of scouts was supposed to take their roles, and Gaius gave the order to get rid of those scouts. Once again, things happened quite easily.
(You have leveled up.)
(You obtained 05 status points.)
"It is working… but now is the time that things get serious," Gaius thought.
Although he wasn't there, Gaius could ask his minions to describe to him what they could see. While he didn't have much knowledge of fighting in situations like that, he couldn't trust those guys' judgment. Besides, he had knowledge that most people in that world didn't have.
Around that time in the night, most of the soldiers were resting, even though a lot of the people in the enemy camp still recalled that they had been attacked before by something that they didn't understand. Still, a few soldiers were patrolling around the area while wearing armor and carrying swords. Dealing with them would be hard…
"Head to the free tents when the patrolling groups are nearby, and then attack them from behind," Gaius ordered.
For the first time, Gaius saw and felt some of his mana being drained. The reason for that was simple; even if they pulled that off, it was suicide… it was going to be impossible for them to escape after starting the fight. Still, that would give them an edge in the battle and the chance to get rid of the most troublesome enemies early on and deal with others that would take some time to prepare for battle.
It would have been a better option if they could use bows, but they didn't bring those, at least not yet. It also would have been pretty shameful if they needed bows more than anything against a smaller force.
After resisting for a couple of minutes, the minds of Gaius' minions gave up. It wasn't only costly for Gaius for his soldiers to struggle against him, but they also would exhaust their minds insisting on that folly.
Gaius' soldiers approached the patrolling soldiers and then attacked them from behind. He almost could imagine the scene as he watched his experience increase… Each kill made him gain ten percent of the necessary amount for him to level up.
For a moment, the amount stopped, and Gaius confirmed that all of his soldiers were alive, and then they began to attack the people in the tents, and his experience began to increase again, but then his soldiers began to be wounded and killed one after the other.
"Around 35, huh," Gaius thought when the last of his soldiers fell dead on the ground.
That wasn't anywhere near enough to stop the advance of the enemies, but that was only the first part of the plan. Once again, Gaius spent most of the night filling up the gauge to summon those guys… he wondered how Angela was going to deal with them; it was hard to say.
Since he skipped a few hours of sleep, Gaius didn't do much the next day aside from resting and listening to what the villagers said about the enemies. The facts were spreading quickly since everyone was preparing themselves for war.
"Did you hear? Something unknown happened to the enemy's camp again."
"Our scouts said that they couldn't approach in time to check, but it looks like it was something similar to before… Some rumors say that ghosts of the enemies attack their own allies out of hatred for what happened."
"They are probably tired and hungry and are imagining things, and some demons must have attacked them… it is kind of scary that we will have to fight people in such an unstable state of mind."
