Chapter 49 - Treants

Zairus looked tired, but he still looked interested in hearing from his son about his experiences. Again, Gaius didn’t talk with a lot of people lately, so he ended up talking with his parents until late in the night.

"I guess in the end, you didn't do a lot of things… you focused only on training, huh," Zairus rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "I should have known… you never showed much interest in interacting with children around your age. Let me guess, they aren't trying to become your friend either? Sometimes, you need to show some humility by approaching them first."

Zairus was a bit worried that Gaius would end up growing up without friends since he couldn't see many kids as his equals… and he wondered if it was because of him since he made Gaius train from an early age… there was no point in crying over the spilled milk, though. He could only keep sharing his experiences with his son and hope that he will learn from them. Being strong was fine and all, but being strong and alone was still pretty depressing. Having some real allies that one can count in really helps when fighting to survive.

"Anyway, you should rest and relax now that you are here," Zairus said while showing a smile. "By the way, your little sister or brother is coming soon, what do you want? I think a girl would be fine now."

Now that the village was somewhat at peace, Gaius' parents could afford to think like that. Either way, his opinion in the matter was irrelevant, what was a little relevant was the fact that Gaius could tell that his father would spoil a daughter rotten if he had one.

In the end, Gaius waited for one week before he went to check the new species of monsters. He spent his days training like usual, and watching how well the guards of the place looked. Although they lost half of their numbers during the war, what Zairus said was true and they still had things under control.

"Father got stronger as well in the last few months, but even though he has been fighting monsters, he didn't get that much experience and levels," Gaius thought when he watched his father leave for work early in the morning. "Mom, I am going to walk around for a bit, I will come back soon."

"Don't do anything reckless…" Kaira said while showing a complicated look already imagining what Gaius was going to do.

Gaius waited for a bit for the guards to leave the village before he did the same… still, he had to head in the opposite direction since the guards in the watchtowers would have noticed him if he had summoned the hawk near the village. It was a pain that he had to do that, but it couldn't be helped. He crossed the distance fairly fast by pretending that he was doing a light jogging.

Once he was far away enough, Gaius called his hawk and then headed in the opposite direction once he was high in the sky. The guards in the watchtowers never saw him when he was five hundred meters above them…

In any case, Gaius had to fly for only ten minutes before he finally saw his father and the other guards splitting up to search for the monsters in the area… it looked like their modus operandi didn't change at all and they were still focusing on keeping the monsters from getting too close to the village instead of just randomly hunting them… Gaius saw some traps laying around, so he imagined that was the reason.

After a couple of minutes, Gaius frowned a bit since the area ahead was a bit weird… It looked like a rocky desert before, but now it was a lot more green than he could remember. At the same time, there were no signs of the desert wolves.

A couple of minutes later, Gaius even managed to see some trees around… a couple of years weren't enough to make those five meters tall trees grow, even if they were in a magic world or something. Still, Gaius' interest made him see something rather peculiar, to say the least…

"So, these are the new types of monsters, huh… I guess it makes sense now why Dad and the others are keeping their perimeter," Gaius thought. "Their levels are high, but their parameters are weird… they are around twenty percent higher than they should be at that level."

Gaius couldn't get more information since the creatures weren't under his control, but maybe they had a special skill that made them stronger passively… any skill that would make him twenty percent stronger was something that Gaius wanted. However, nothing says that he would get that since he didn't have the same composition as those things.

Before fighting them, Gaius decided to move further West for a while and confirmed that the rocky desert had become something like a green rocky area. Even after he flew for thirty kilometers, that didn't end and he saw Treants even two hundred meters… They liked to keep their distance from each other.

The Treants were basically trees that had some weird faces in the middle of the trunks. In some stories that Gaius read, they were supposed to be peaceful and didn't do anything unless their territory was taken or attacked, but since they were attacking, Gaius didn't have to worry about all that. Fire magic should be really effective against them, but Gaius couldn't use it and he didn't want to leave signs of his actions either.

"Still, I didn't bring my spear since I thought that my magic would be enough… this will be hard when their Resistance is this high," Gaius rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "My technique that I developed in the last few months is also almost useless without using a weapon… and I don't want to get close enough that I have to punch those things. In one way or the other, magic will do it."

Gaius made the Hawk fly a little low and then he began to summon his magic arrows when he was fifty above one of the monsters. At the same time, the creature felt Gaius' bloodlust and then decided to fight… Gaius fired numerous magic arrows toward the beast, but it fired back some crazy leaves that were sharp and were spinning really fast.

Gaius' attack won the exchange, but soon he noticed the attacks losing power and eventually were overpowered by the barrage of leaves. As expected, they had the upperhand since they were that strong and their projectiles already existed before they fired them.

"I don't think that it is your main weapon, but I guess it isn't surprising that you can use Razor Leaf…" Gaius thought and then made the Hawk fly high. "Against grass types, logic says that I need to use fire… but I don't have any attacks like that."

Still, Gaius had other solutions for such a problem… after he was high enough, Gaius jumped from the back of the Hawk and then dived toward the treant. Although he attacked the beasts before, the creature didn't react to him, until he pointed his right hand at it and then began to summon a massive sphere of mana.

"This is useful to know…" Gaius smirked. "I guess they can react to the instincts and thoughts of other creatures that can use mana."

The monster began to attack Gaius with the leaves, but the magic sphere devoured and destroyed the leaves… eventually, the monster began to make some earth spears emerge from the ground and fly toward it… Gaius was caught off guard, but not that much. He used all this remaining mana in the attack and thanks to it, he eventually reached the beast and his spell began to destroy the creature down to a molecular level…

The creature Treant was added to the summoning list.
