Since he was joking around, It looked like Gaius was fine, but then he clicked his tongue when Kennil and other soldiers moved in to protect him from the enemies.
Gaius could understand why they were acting like that… they recognized his strength and skills, and they didn't want to let someone with that much potential fall there. However, Gaius didn't want to feel indebted to them… even if they were acting on their own volition in order to gain a lot more in the future, Gaius still would feel troubled if they were to die… in one way or the other, he didn't want to owe favors to anyone. It was indeed a weird feeling since it made Gaius feel more eager to protect them... he might be strong and skilled thanks to his power, but he still felt uncomfortable in that position.
Before Gaius could think of anything else, the heavy cavalry charged again… the enemies that were pushed away learned their lessons and when the impact happened between the soldiers, they kept their guard up and this time, both sides were pushed away. The sound of the battle was crazy, it was defeating in a way that Gaius couldn't quite describe.
"They traded some power for endurance… by using their horses," Gaius thought.
The riders were using their legs to keep the posture of their mounts. They were at least skilled when it came to riding… Regardless, Gaius knew what he could do to deal with them.
“Sorry… I wonder if I am crazy for feeling worse for killing animals instead of humans,” Gaius thought. “They were bred and raised for this, and they didn’t have a choice in fighting, after all. When it comes down to it, I need to do everything in my power to help my allies...”
The horses weren’t as well protected as the riders… so Gaius had an easy time attacking their heads… In the blink of an eye, Gaius put arrows and killed five horses, making them fall alongside their riders. The riders lost their balance again and Gaius put arrows in their heads at the same speed. It was a bit more experience gained, but… there was no point in complaining.
The second line of heavy cavalry speed up their arrival since they noticed that someone was killing their allies weirdly fast, but it took a while for them to see what was the reason for that since Gaius stopped attacking and he had a reason for that.
“Forget about changing my weapons, make sure to hide behind us and attack those guys whenever an opening is shown,” Kennil declared after he moved backward a bit. “I hate to admit it, but this kind of enemy is at the level of siege weapons and the poisonous archers.”
That was the reason why Gaius slowed down… it looked like they needed to be careful since the enemies might overwhelm them on a single point and destroy their defense lines. The heavy cavalry began to look for Gaius but they didn’t have the chance to do so since the cavalry on his side began to get closer to their commander.
Gaius was also pretty small and he didn’t have long weapons, so he could easily slip in behind the other riders. Things slowed down a little thanks to that, while the enemies had the upperhand in terms of raw power, they were conscious of Gaius’ arrows.
After a couple of minutes, some of the most impatient enemies decided to attack with all their might. Still, they slowed down again when some of the enemies were hit on their necks… the armor on those areas was thinner and Gaius had the chance to confirm that once he laid low for a short while.

…
Gaius could imagine some good uses for those guys. They wouldn’t be good for missions to gather intel, but to hunt monsters, and in wars, they would be a force to be recognized… unfortunately, Gaius didn’t feel that happy with the situation since he wasn’t able to take them down faster than the people in his side were being killed and yet… Kennil wasn’t planning to change his plans.
“I guess he thinks this is acceptable in the bigger picture…” Gaius furrowed his eyebrows.
That wasn't his choice, so Gaius just focused on his doing his job… still, the battle soon came to an end when a platoon of one hundred Archers began to approach from the East and another group with the same number of warriors that were coming on foot… they were strangely fast even on foot and they were also only carrying knives with them.
"Retreat! Our job is done!" Kennil shouted.
The back line began to move as soon they heard the order… but the cavalry was going to watch their retreat, so Gaius and many others were far from safety. He had no idea what they had accomplished with that battle, but he wasn't willing to think too much about it either… he killed twenty of those heavy cavalry soldiers and he was fine with their addition to his army.
Although they had to watch the retreat of the whole group, the cavalry didn't suffer much damage even when the reinforcements arrived to help the enemies… the reason for that was the fact that they were faster and their horses weren't carrying all that much weight. Moreover, when someone was foolish enough to get too close to them, Gaius put arrows on them.
"Something feels off… something changed, but I don't know what it is…" Gaius thought while he was crossing the gate.
Once Gaius took a deep breath, he realized what was that odd feeling… the soldiers that were close to Kennil didn't glare at him anymore… only the enemies did that, and that was why he felt confused. Instead of glaring, they looked at him with eyes filled with suspicion… they were thankful that someone killed a bunch of those heavy riders, others did the same, but on a much smaller scale.
"I guess I will have to endure this for a while and just answer some questions," Gaius thought. "I never did anything that would make them feel that I would betray them, so it is fine."
Gaius waited to see what they were going to do… the day had just started, after all, so there were a lot of things that the enemies could do to get their revenge… even though Gaius felt that both sides lost the same number of soldiers.
Upon his return, Kennil ordered some people around to count their numbers. They left the city knowing exactly their numbers, so it was time to count their losses and see how the enemies would fare after more or less losing a battle outside the walls.
Gaius waited around, but he eventually was taken to the side of the commander's tents. There he looked after the horses again and cleaned the weapons that Kennil used. Although it was a fine weapon, the halberd suffered too much damage when Kennil used it to attack the enemy's shields.
"They are receiving the reports of the soldiers that they lost earlier… two hundred soldiers… it feels a lot less than I had expected," Gaius thought. "Still, treating all this like just numbers... they were essentially strangers that we fought alongside each other, but I am getting too used to this."
His perception was high and so was Gaius' sense of hearing. Regardless, losing two hundred riders and their horses seemed quite something… but he also heard that it was the first time in that war that someone managed to endure the advance of the enemy's cavalry. They won all the battles that they participated in and killed hundreds every single time.
"I thought he made me follow him to answer some questions to the other commanders, but I guess I was wrong…" Gaius thought when he heard the sound of Kennil's footsteps.
“It looks like we dealt a good blow on the enemies, they retreated all of their sides to check what happened on our battlefield,” Kennil said. “Let’s return to our area, we have a lot to talk about.”
Gaius didn’t want that, but he knew that the other generals waited for him to bring up the topic that was Gaius’ magic, but he ignored their wait and intentions. He had no intention of sharing information about particular skills of his soldiers with the people there.
“Do you have origins outside of our state?” Kennil asked. “I thought that all of the people of your village were people that moved away from our territory in the last years of the previous rule.”
