Chapter 68 - Back and Forth

“Why the hell… the skill level was at fifteen… when I am supposed to only summon one of them at a time?” Gaius finally realized that something was off about the fact that he could summon a bunch of the wrath demons.”

Because of all the fighting, Gaius didn’t have the chance to notice that… but something wasn’t right about that. They all had the same name and levels, so he assumed that they were just like other demons which he could only summon one at a time, but that wasn’t the case.

“I guess this might be another reason as to why Angela has been avoiding me…” Gaius rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “She doesn’t know or doesn’t want to say too much that might affect the world too much. Come to think of it, some monsters aren't called demons when I defeat them, but this one has in its name, while the others are just the type of the creatures... this is suspicious.”

Gaius had even more reasons to summon those creatures at night and study them even at level one… he didn’t have the chance to study them during the fight or on the way back, but he needed them now.

“Commander… did we find anything weird with those monsters?” Gaius asked when Kennil readied his horse to move.

“Why are you asking that now? Do you think more of them will attack us?” Kennil furrowed his eyebrows.

“I was just wondering about them,” Gaius shrugged.

“... We aren’t the ones investigating them, and I don’t think we have any free hands to do so,” Kennil replied. “I don’t think that those things can be eaten, but the people here should have butchered the corpses already and used the materials.”

Gaius didn't know much about whether people in the world studied monsters and stuff, but a butcher probably didn't do that… in any case, that was a problem for later since they had to move out.

"Save your strength and focus on avoiding the arrows," Kennil said while looking at his men. "We have another important task today and we can't afford to fail."

It felt like he was about to say it again, but held himself back. In any case, the gates of the city opened all at once again and the enemies in the distance were already ready for action. Still, they were caught off guard again since the forces that left the walls didn't make any sense on any of the sides…

"That is what you get from losing the power to determine the pace of the battle," Gaius thought.

The cavalry dashed ahead while being led by Kennil and the other general. They increased their pace and ignored any formations since the enemies would have an easy time hitting a lot of them if they got clustered together. Despite that, Gaius could see the poisonous archers readying themselves behind several lines of infantrymen armed with spears and tower shields.

"Focus on a single point again," Kennil said while looking over his shoulder. "We will open the path to both sides.

Gaius nodded… he had already shown some of his allies that he could fire arrows without the bow, but he still summoned and fired them with his weapon after making them a bit bigger. It was better that way since he could combine his magic and physical strength.

When the first arrow landed, it knocked down one man with his shield… several others came after that and did the same and decimated an entire line of enemies. Although they didn't die during the impact, they died when the horses began to step on them.

Kennil and the other soldiers swung their spears to the sides and began to decimate the infantry. They tried to hit them and the horses, but they never reached them since Gaius covered their backs by focusing on those that got closest. A lot of them died, and yet… there were no signs of the arrows.

The massive wave of arrows only came when all of the cavalry was close behind the Frontlines. Surprisingly enough, Gaius could tell that some of the infantrymen were within the range of the arrows, but their allies accepted their unwilling sacrifice…

It felt like the arrows were going up and down in slow motion. Gaius still could see Kennil and the other general in the corner of his vision and they were doing fine… even though they soon were going to be hit by a rain of arrows. They would be too busy to defend against attacks from two directions.

Gaius only had five seconds to think of a solution for that problem… the soldiers on the back would be fine since they weren’t busy, but the others on the frontline sure would be in dire straits.

“Welp, I guess there is no other choice…” Gaius thought while looking around for a moment.

Everyone was too busy to focus on him and besides, Gaius couldn’t see the point of hiding another spell when he already showed some of his tricks… in the end, he began to fire Wind Spheres toward the wave of arrows.

Most of the projectiles that were about to hit the frontline broke into pieces in the air… the good thing about the Wind Sphere was the fact that it would explode with contact and the wind changed the trajectory of most of the arrows… Still, that annoying smell began to permeate the air and that would be a problem even with the pieces of cloth in their mouths.

Although Gaius got rid of the first wave of arrows on the frontline, the second wave would come in less than five seconds. Things got more complicated when the horses on the frontline began to scream… everyone looked in those directions and saw a bunch of riders falling on the ground… Gaius had to stop moving when the same thing suddenly happened in front of him… Kennil and the other general lost their horses for some reason.

“Xanthus…” Gaius muttered under his breath when he saw several spikes on the ground.

Kennil’s horse didn’t have a name… probably because he lost a bunch of them in battles, but Gaius still has one for his current one and the commander. His name was Balius and they were famous names of the horses that Achilles rode using his chariot…

“No wonder those guys weren’t stepping down no matter what…” Gaius clenched his teeth while seeing the enemy's soldiers.

The enemies didn’t step down because they couldn’t and in order to hide the traps… some horses avoided the traps, and forced the enemy's soldiers to fall on them… Some stepped on the traps and were killed instantly after being impaled.

The horses' legs of the generals were hurt, they weren’t going anywhere and Gaius saw the archers pulling the strings of the bows again. At the same time, the infantrymen began to charge at them with a crazy look in their eyes since they knew they were going to die in one way or the other.

“Man, I just can’t catch a break…” Gaius thought. “Those guys could obtain millions selling a masterclass on how to catch their enemies with traps.”

Gaius picked up his spear and then put away his bow, at the same time, he began to fire mana arrows around like a machine gun… it didn’t take long for the enemies around those two to fall dead. That gave them enough time to get up and ready themselves for fighting.

“Get another horse,” The other general said. “Your mission still stands! The enemies will think that you will be retreating after this, it is the perfect chance.”

Gaius didn't want to leave Xanthus behind, he spent weeks looking after that horse, he only had a single slot for a horse in his summoning list. Kennil didn't hesitate in looking for another horse around, but he and many others had to stop moving when the arrows rained down on them… they easily blocked them by spinning the spears above their heads, though.

"Oh yeah, I wonder if I can do that… it would be awesome to stop bullets like that and fire right back at the enemies," Gaius thought.

"We are retreating!" Kennil shouted once he found another horse.
