Impractical Magic Chapter 46

A servant came knocking at our room.

"The King would like to have breakfast with you."

We followed her into the dining hall. It looked exactly like the one in Harry Potter.

For some reason, it felt kind of lonely. I, Blake, Maria, Howard, the King and his knights. Were the only people in this large hall.

You can hear the spoon's echo as it scoops the food from the plate. No one dares to start a conversation, is it etiquette to not talk during mealtime?

"Ehem-ehem..." [Angelica]

I just cleared my throat, then all their gaze fell on to me. What? Are you guys waiting for me to say something? Even the King has stopped eating, holding the spoon midway.

Since it came to this I might as well say it...

"I will forgive you for the prank yesterday, but please refrain from doing it again." [Angelica]

"I understand." [King]

After eating. The King wanted to have a private conversation with me. Blake and Maria were both worried that I might be taken, hostage. With some convincing, I managed to change their minds, but still... they cautioned me to be careful around him.

The King sent away his guards in which they were reluctant to leave. Now, only the King and I were left at the dining hall.

"This place isn't suited for conversing with guests. Please walk with me." [King]

"..." [Angelica]

He stood up and I followed him.

"Tell me... why do you not want to turn your invention into a weapon." [King]

"I don't want the things that I make to be used to rob someone of their life." [Angelica]

"Even if I present to you fame and fortune?" [King]

"I'd just rather sell my stoves. That way I can accumulate them both, slowly but surely." [Angelica]

"I like you, I rarely have this kind of normal talk." [King]

"Normal talk?" [Angelica]

"People are always afraid to say the things they wanted. Unlike you who was blunt." [King]

"Since that prank of yours, my impression of you has lowered a bit." [Angelica]

"..." [King]

We went to a locked room, and as he unlocked it, he edged me to go inside.

Inside is full of dust, there was stuff covered in sheets. From what I can tell they were a bed, table, wardrobe, and a painting hanging on the wall.

The King went to the covered painting and pulled the cover, as it fell, I saw the painting of a girl. Blond hair, shoulder-length, crystal blue eyes. What caught my attention was the necklace, which is quite similar to my mother's that is now hanging on my neck...

"Pardon me I still didn't know your name." [King]

"Angelica." [Angelica]

"Angelica, how old are you?" [King]

What is his reason for asking about my age?

"Sixteen, going seventeen this year..." [Angelica]

"Did you know... my daughter went missing eighteen years ago." [King]

Eighteen... if I add it up. This necklace, her face and eyes, also the year there is a possibility that my mother was the first princess... almost all evidence points to her, even the King has probably thought of the same thing.

"..." [Angelica]

"It seems my hunch is correct." [King]

While piecing together the puzzle in thought I wasn't able to answer. Why did mother not tell me of the kidnapping? Why didn't she return?

When mom was kidnapped did father rescue her? It seemed that father is really good at using the pitchfork as a polearm. If so, mother fell in love with him and decided to just stay with him is my only conclusion.

"But that was all a lie. My daughter hadn't been kidnapped..." [King]

"If she hasn't been kidnapped the-" [Angelica]

"She had eloped with a knight." [King]

"Eloped?!" [Angelica]

"Heh, you too had the same reaction when your mother was surprised. Your glares are also identical." [King]

"What do you plan on doing, if I am your granddaughter?" [Angelica]

"Nothing." [King]

If mother eloped then father is...

"I cannot be forgiven for my sins in the past, but this time I wante- Ugh-ugh!" [King]

"Hey?!" [Angelica]

I caught him just in time as he was about to collapse. I shouted for help.
