Already full, William couldn't eat any longer, while 2 plates are still in the bag.
Patting his chewing cheeks with his left hand, and stomach with his other one, he feels like his energy skyrockets to new heights.
He will return to comprehending the status sheet to the bitter end of this day.
“Well... That leaves 2 plates of meat, and 3 bowls of potatoes. You haven't even left any rice.” Mi-Yung says and takes note of what they left.
“W-what do you mean? Food is meant to be consumed. Of course, I ate what was available. I couldn't eat everything, you know?”
“I will rather not comment on anything. Go get some rest, while I will go out to see the current state of the Awakening and information about the Examination. There should be a conference hall getting ready for it so, so I will go see how it looks.” Mi-Yung says in an unbothered tone and puts the table back in its place.
Some of the food is still left there, as William watches it go away from his reach.
Not like he complains, since he couldn't eat anymore of that bliss.
Instead, he thanks Mi-Yung as she leaves the room, before laying down in an unfamiliar bed once again.
His mind is calmer than ever. William feels different ever since the start of this whole day. As if his whole being is a bit more alive, and not in a familiar way at all.
He thinks it's about the effects of the Emblem or the murmurs of the Mindless Eyes. Wonders about the effects of the Emblem and the System. He couldn't help but think about them.
After all, he learned and researched the 6th floor in a much more detailed manner than he should have. No one told him anything about it, so he wasn't polite about seeking information about the Emblems and Walkers as well.
Though, he felt fine with generic and beginner-friendly stuff. He didn't even glance at Rank 2 and the above information about Emblem.
Still, what it left him was plenty of information to go through for more than a week. From the types of Emblems and things that Mi-Yung told him briefly in the past 6 weeks.
The abilities of the Walkers and their Emblems are important. So is the System that makes everything combined together.
Now, it all clicked in his mind, as many important pieces of information seem much more important than anything else before.
The reason?
His Emblem is special, but he doesn't understand how. It tells the combined type of Vectors and Mutant in his status sheet so there must be something to this than meets the eye. That is the reason he is trying so hard to comprehend this line of his system, so he could uncover more information. If he won't, he will tell Mi-Yung about it, so he will know what's up with that. For now, he is looking for a way to do this in his own way.
He knows there is more to this since that is the general this should work. Many kinds of research point toward the status sheet, numbers, and skills as if they are something strange. Many kinds of changes can be there, with many kinds of possibilities. Rules aren't as important as basic understandings, and Mi-Yung told him that herself. Vectors, Element, Mutant. Those trees are the basic types that one could achieve, but William is different. His sheet tells the two, so what could that mean? He goes with what was written in the documents he has read before, but they never stated anything about this.
“For now, I will do my best, because I must do my best so I can achieve the best. That's right... Who am I kidding? Not me!” he resolutely mumbles away, not making much sense, but there is no one to judge him about it. Going right back to where he started before the meal, he restarts his comprehension.
With Mi-Yung gone, it goes smooth, until he reaches the 20-minute mark in his third hour after Mi-Yung left for the second time. It's already night, but he doesn't feel any more confident.
“I feel like it goes easier now after the 15-minute mark, but is that it? Continue until it will resolve itself by the Mindless eye?” he guesses from Mi-Yung's previous comment while being unsure how right it was.
“There goes nothing anyway.”
1 more hour goes by and he continues doing the same.
In the 2nd one, Mi-Yung returns after being away for 4 hours.
“How it's going?” She asked cheerfully, appearing smiling and curious about William's progress.
“I am struggling at the 20-minute mark. I feel like the tip of the Mindless Eye is getting somewhere. Then it leaves my mind.”
“You should focus on the calmness instead,” she tells a single sentence while going to the table with a couple of sheets of paper in hand.
“Calmness... What's so calm about the Mindless Eyes? It is like worms are inside my head!” William argues as he couldn't see it any different. No, he couldn't understand the possibility of retaining some sense of calm.
“That was my last attempt at giving you a hint. Work slowly if you feel like it. It is your first day being a Walker, and you already want to comprehend the stat sheet. I wonder what you will want to do in a month with such progress.” Mi-Yung says in a tone of sarcasm, which makes William quite unhappy.
“I will still do this... I have nothing to lose but some mild discomfort and energy.” William shoots down Mi-Yung, trying to demoralize his attempts.
“W-what a guy... He has been going at it since he awakened his System, and he doesn't feel tired. What sort of things is he missing to tell me?” Mi-Yung wonders in silence, while she spreads the papers on the table.
These are the document of the successful Awakening with a bit more detailed steps. Everything in this paper is according to the Emblem Institution in charge of Tom Hough. Whether the truth within is fine or not is subjective.
After all, Mi-Yung has been quite sure the machines didn't leave the whole procedure with utmost clearance and clarity.
Whatever went behind the veil that has been his Emblem Awakening causes Mi-Yung to be doubtful about the Accelerator. Those are precisely the papers that are before her. She forced them from Vice-Director Samuel, which took some effort from her side. He complied in the end, because Mi-Yung is from the Assembly, and she wanted the readings only from William's case.
She has every right to feel this; her doubts about the Accelerator and the Awakening. Since her only Rank 7 skill is named Allseer Eyes, she managed to see beyond the veil of thick Vectors. It is a type of surveillance skill that can watch a lot of things in detail. More than the normal eyes could do. Furthermore, it has the ability to detect any wrongful harm to the user, while gazing at the things that aren't meant to be seen. Whatever the case is, that is a precious skill that took a long time for Mi-Yung to upgrade and improve.
.
Looking at the papers without paying attention to another William's attempts, it shows the graphs and general screenings of the Accelerator. It shoves significant jumps in affinity and many detailed steps on how it's supposed to work.
Some graphs jump from 0 to 100, and so on.
“I knew it... Hough noticed this for sure as well.” Mi-Yung stares at this paper with the utmost caution, as the meaning of this is something strange. While she is unsure if she was the only one able to see beyond the veil of Vectors, she... well. With the Rank 8s in the room, she would be surprised if that was the case.
After all, the Awakening of the Emblem is an occasion that is redundant to the Ranks. Some Awakenings could even affect and endanger Rank 6 or 7 Walkers if they are in close proximity of the Awakening.
Mi-Yung knows that her Allseer Eyes can gaze upon the Rank 8 monsters with some efficiency, so William's Awakening has been fine in that case. It was not like it had the power beyond the rank 8. In this case, she would be unable to see or detect anything.
Awakening and true Rank 8 Dark beings are different things from her knowledge, while the underlying truth of the Awakening is less than normal. Going from 0 to 1 is fundamental, and the very first change in the Arcanite matter, and fully starting the System.
“These screenings that I got from them are useless. I bet the affinity isn't clear with this method, since the things that happened beyond the veil were... different...” she speculates, while the truth of the possibilities is a distant topic for her.
She isn't a scientist nor someone proficient with knowledge regarding such information. Her expertise is more humane, with politics and occasional special missions for the Assembly.
“Huh... And here I went, trying to be his proxy. I wonder if others will be interested in these papers as well. I bet some would, or they already did. I forgot to ask Samuel about it.” Mi-Yung thinks at last, as she is done with these papers. Leaning her back on the chair, she shot a curious look at William, who is struggling with his little play.
Figuring out the gestures for the stat sheet? It isn't a bad thing, but it is not right as well.
“William?”
“W-what? I am out here, struggling with my lif.. mind on the line!” he tells in a fake try to appear fine.
“I can see that soldier boy... Time is getting ready, so stop after another hour, so your mind will be fine for the next thing. We have about 3 hours until things are over down there. The conference is already happening with some pre-existing deals.”
“A-already? What about mine? Y-you said you will help, right? According to number 95... ”
“... you don't have to care for that at the moment. It's not like I want to influence your decision at all. It's fair for me to give you a helping hand. That is all. Understand?”
“I see... You never told me this before... this reason... I shall accept this generosity.” William tells to her eyes, as his gaze returns towards his stat sheet.
“Hmph. How generous. Good luck with your little tries.” Mi-Yung chuckles, while feeling a bit better.
With a personality such as this, he shouldn't be too bad of a Walker. Even without her help, he should have become a good one, but only time will tell that.
Time flies on, and William, on his last attempt, does a great job at 23 minutes. A thing that felt like an eternity, with an increasing strain on his eyes, then anything else.
It was even stronger than mental strain, but the eyes and mind are quite close when it comes to their pain. So William accepts this result and stops right here after the 2nd attempt. 1 hour is right around the corner, so there goes his comprehending and first training of his Walker mindset.
Although he feels great, it could be because of adrenaline or the food he ate. It gave him the strength necessary to accomplish things so far, but it will soon, diminish, and nervousness will envelop his mind.
“T-this is great. Great. I feel alright.” He mutters, which is overheard by Mi-Yung who watches his fist that ceases the System away in one motion.
“You good?”
“That's like 4th or 5th time you are asking that. Is everything alright? It should be, right?” William turns his attention back to Mi-Yung, who half sits, and a half lays leisurely with folded arms on the table.
“You counted it?” she asks in surprise.
“M-maybe...”
“I am worried. That is all. The first steps are the hardest, aren't they? I heard some Walkers talk about it when they noticed my emblem when I was very little. Making your system your own is a path that will go for dozens of years. Until our death, it will always stay with us so I always felt there is a good point in rushing towards the goal. Considering the strain... it makes little sense, but I still wanted to try it.”
“I have no idea what those guys told to the young you, but it makes us stronger, doesn't it? This strain of the Mindless Eyes isn't there for nothing. Not just for some... strange motions within our heads.” Mi-Yung explains.
“I guess I will figure it out eventually...” William says his cup of truth, which he gets a little after spending 6 weeks in the Federation.
Not all of this time he spent worrying about being a Walker, of course. However, he grew up as a person and that is important.
“Y-you... don't get a lot of stuff. This system and everything... You should wait and talk about things after comprehending the Skills in your status board if you feel like a strong boy.” Mi-Yung tells with a speck of hesitation.
