“Not infinite? Wait, where do I get to know more about the Emblem itself within my System? You told me something about this before, I think...” William asks in curiosity, not wanting to think of the infinite or finite ways of the Arcanite.
“Emblem? Do you mean the overview? I am fairly sure I didn't tell you anything, but good enough to try. It is within your System. You are supposed to focus on it with your Mindless Eyes. It's about the status sheet that you mentioned.”
William gazes back to his System, as his little try of forcing Mi-Yung to tell him more has been successful.
“Focusing... alright. I bet the Mindless Eyes will move according to my tries.” he guesses and presses his hand forward. Summoning his clawed hand, the screen appears too.
Before him is the status sheet from before. With no differences, but his way of summoning and switching it off and on is good. It's all about practice and Willam feels it's about right.
“Let's try focusing on the Type, which tells the Emblem's affinity. Vectors and... Mutant? Huh?” William looks at it clearly and realizes something strange right about now. His attention wasn't the brightest before, so he only noticed it right about now. He didn't tell Mi-Yung about that, but he wants to try to feel it, so he presses his attention to that line of text that tells, Vectors, and Mutant respectively.
His eyes glued to the line, he tries to focus his full attention on it. Even his right pointer finger is pointing forward in a try to focus more.
It makes some weird sight for Mi-Yung, who sees him as if he is a weirdo, who points toward the ceiling as if it's his fateful enemy.
She knows this feeling very well, but getting this sort of thing done isn't that easy. It is always a challenge for new Walkers. Even with the Mindless eye that she described very briefly, it shouldn't make sense to any early Walker. Those are, of course, not experienced in this, so having trouble comprehending the status of the Mindless Eyes comes as no surprise.
That thing called Mindless Eyes is a small manifestation of the System. It digs into their minds. Making small amounts of information and awareness into the forms of intangible words for the Walkers. It is almost like a small whispering voice, without talking, but a subconscious feeling that something should be done.
It is something that is common across all the Walkers, while it's exclusive to the System alone.
Although there have been some Walkers that claimed their Mindless Eyes to be different from the normal kind. Such claims are, for the most part, shut down, while researching it is impossible since it's about the human psyche.
The part "impossible" is relative. Considering the madman by the name of Tom Hough, who wouldn't care about anything else but the Emblem. The System is also somewhat common to his research, but considering how none physical it is, it's not easy to research it.
It is a bit different from the Emblem since it is not a physical thing that one could touch or see. Emblems, on the other hand, are all physical. Sometimes, a bit too much, but that isn't a bad thing at all.
Mi-Yung keeps on the lookout, while a smile is appearing underneath her resting the palm on her chin. She makes herself comfy since the waiting time could be longer than she anticipates. The Awakening down below in the crypts would go all the way up until the night. Then, would come the time for the decision about the future of all the young Walkers.
Right about now, it isn't even past half of the all participants, so that leaves nothing but a long day for most of the people in this building.
“T-this... doesn't work at all,” William says after 10 minutes of his focused gaze, without any results. No amount of calling or whispering noise makes any sense. Not his connection or connection of the Mindless Eyes, nor anything else.
There has been a sliver of shimmer response from the Mindless Eyes, but it all came from the lack of powerful enough focus, so it dissipates.
Seeing him so flustered, Mi-Yung could only chuckle. “Maybe you will get it within the week, or a month. You will see... This whole system takes a lot of practice and mental drainage. Let's say I am telling it from my own perspective so you know... Be patient.”
“Patient is a virtue... Heh... I will do this. I swear!” William says resolutely while getting back at it. He wants to see as much as he can before the next stage of this whole day.
He keeps going, with breaks to rest his mind, and Mi-Yung remarks to calm down, and force him to take it easy.
Her words help little, as she could see the resolute and determined eyes of William, who is enjoying this in some strange way or form.
It is not like she is blaming him. After all, it is part of her responsibility, she told herself before she even met him.
Everything is in the order to repay the kindness that she got from his father. No matter how bad that may sound, it's a responsibility she decided on long ago.
Time flows away while the middle of the day passes, and the afternoon is halfway gone too. It will be night in a couple of hours.
The pair haven't eaten anything, so Mi-Yung leaves the room for some time. Getting some meals, which should be provided in this building, she leaves William to do his stuff.
Alone in the room, William keeps on going without any difference in Mi-Yung's presence or lack of it.
“Y-you little... You are just a System's sheet. What's so bad about getting to know more about it? Why does it take so much effort to understand it?” William punches the bedsheet in frustration after 15 minutes of the stressful stare.
“Is... is it not about staring? Don't tell me I am doing it in a wrong way?” he assumes, as he is about to try other options.
He doesn't know them, but without any success, one could get better results in different ways.
For example, without a staring this time. Instead, imagine it within the mind, while keeping the vision of the status before him. It is different, so that may work, is what he thinks.
Wrong.
Another 15 minutes later, not even the motion of the strange calling of the Mindful eye enters his mind.
“F-failure... Nothing unexpected, to be honest. Let's go with the other possibility. The one which Mi-Yung told me about before. Making a specific gesture for the call of this sheet. It shouldn't be that different from summoning this System, to begin with. Instead of that, I am summoning the more detailed information of my Emblem. That should work, hopefully...”
William speculates as this possibility seems the most likely to be working. Not like he knows what to expect, since he doesn't know it.
Seeing more information about his Emblem should be important, so there goes his focus.
Mi-Yung is yet to come back with some food, so William's entire focus is on pulling toward his status sheet in front of him.
5 minutes.
10 minutes.
15 minutes.
William keeps trying, while a variety of gestures end up doing nothing.
“Come on! I am trying my best.” William argues, while not knowing this isn't about focus, but more about mental capacity. One has to have a calm mind, while the Mindless Eyes would do the rest.
Of course, it isn't as simple as that, since the strain on the mind is more than it seems. One has to have the mental power for the Mindless Eyes to work while trying this without a calm mind, and a mental attitude isn't enough.
One has to remain calm under that stress. It can take up to 30 minutes before coming close to comprehending the truth. Time can vary, as the System underlying vision and information aren't clear to any particular Walker. Underneath the corresponding folders are unique informations.
10 minutes later, the door opens up, with Mi-Yung coming inside.
In both hands are bags of some stuff.
“How it goes?” are her first words, as she tossed the bags beside the table.
It goes unnoticed by William, who keeps staring at the ceiling with his middle finger pointing at it as well.
“Mi-Yung... are the gestures a bad idea when it comes to uncovering these informations from my status?” he asks amidst his deadly stare.
“Heheh. You really kept going? That is quite impressive already. How long are you managing this staring contest? 10 minutes in the process of Mindless Eyes?”
“My record is 16 and a half from my initial tries,” he tells the disappointing truth.
“That is quite good. It shows your affinity from the Examination is much better. Some people have troubles with undergoing the Mindless Eyes, which makes... certain noises and things could get messy in their heads.”
“I can see that... What about your trip? I feel like I would eat up a pig if I could.”
“Heheheheh. Well, since you insist, I made a certain long-awaited visit. That's why It took me that long, but I promised you something, before. Did I not?” Mi-Yung asks with a meaningful smile.
“Promise? You mean the Pit?” William instantly remembers.
His nose wouldn't betray him at the moment as the smell coming from the bag would never disappear from his memory.
“Yes. Why not eat to your fill? My promises are important, so eat whatever you want. I bought up enough for 3 people.”
“Nice! Thank you very much!” William cheers with a clenched fist, which let the screen go away. His Emblem calms down as well, with a small swirling matter, that retains the previous coin-like pattern.
Sitting cross-legged on the bed, it almost seems he isn't all that tired at all. The smell of food rejuvenates his mind and body and he awaits his meal.
“You... You want to eat in the bed?” Mi-Yung asks while being sure about the unfortunate answer.
“I can't? I like it this way.”
“Are you eating in the bed in my home as well?”
“I... I wouldn't dare...”
“Would you?”
“M-maybe some fruits... some handful kebab, apples or whatnot... nothing bad,” William mumbles while staring away from the gaze of Mi-Yung, whose eyes have a strange spark of light.
“You can always get on your feet and eat o the table. Here! I will do this at least.” Mi-Yung gives up with whatever she is trying, and grabs the robust table which has cabinets on each side that make the legs.
Dragging it towards the bed, as if it is made of paper, she places the chair in the middle of the room. William faces the table from his bed, while she can eat from the other side as well. Problem solved.
Like this, he could eat from bed, but in a more civilized manner, if that makes some sense.
“See? I can be considerate!” She tells while feeling a bit proud of her idea.
“S-sure. This is an excellent idea worth the praise.” William tells back, as his stomach growls with displeasure at the lack of food. Not that per se. It's more about the anticipation that the stomach wants. The smell and everything from this day leave William like this.
Mi-Yung takes the content of the bags to the table, which consists of 7 plates of meat, and additional bowls, or plates of side dishes. Potatoes of all kinds are the first thing in a few bowls. Boiled, baked, mashed, or in the form of fries are there to choose from. Rice is rice, so that leaves a simple 2 bowls of it.
There is no soup since they are a pain in the ass to take out. The only additions to side dishes are freshly baked bread and baguette.
Other than that, the 7 plates of meat are already ready to eat, since this place wouldn't have a grill to cook it. Charred, hot, and nice, it makes it crystal clear that those were grilled not that long ago.
Steam coming from it leaves much expectation for William, who watches everything in silence before Mi-Yung places the last possible plate on the table.
The table is not big enough for all plates, so 2 plates of meat and 2 potato bows will wait in the bag.
Without the need to wait, Mi-Yung starts eating, and so does William. He long awaits for it with the fork and spoon, before munching everything down without hesitation.
There is enough meat with beef stakes, marinated chicken, pork bellies, or even chops. Their stomachs are filled with utmost pleasure and bliss in less than 10 minutes. This kind of meal was an occurrence a month ago, so William couldn't help but smile ear to ear as the grilled pork belly melts on top of his tongue.
A sliver of fat leaves the kind of aftertaste he loves. Filled with fat, pork taste, and texture of pork meat, it is fantastic. It's seasoned to perfection by chef Rose, who perfected her cooking skills a long time ago. At least according to the harsh requirements that Mi-Yung wanted from her investments.
Everything is perfect in William's eyes, and Mi-Yung eats her fill, too. With this kind of meal, both are very satisfied indeed.
Alas, time is finite, and so are the plates.
