Ignoring Mi-Yung as her words are echoing in his focus, William can't hear her properly from the very impressive sight before his eyes.
He could tell that his questionable roads start right now. There is only further he can go since the very next flick of the screen is met with his gaping mouth.
There, he glimpses into something he doesn't understand. There is a second screen? Some possible ways of the progression? He doesn't know what this is, but there are big letters on top of this screen that tells.
Bestiary.
Though empty, for now, he could see an ample space of cloudy matter that flicks with the distinct appearances of some Dark beings. He couldn't really point out any of them, since the fog around them makes it impossible to discern.
“William?!” a clear voice says right beside his head, which wakes his mind from the sudden wonders.
It wakes him up from the reverie that is the System, but Mi-Yung doesn't seem to care about the wonders of this youth.
“Wh... Mi-Yung? I am speechless. Do you have a System like this too?”William asks with a clear head while she is still worrying, although no longer being ignored.
“Of course, I have my own System... I don't know about yours, so tell me more about your status. I could see you changed to a few screens already, so the Mindless Eyes is working on you?”
“Mindless Eyes?”
“It's called that feeling as if you understand something, yet seeing it for the first time in your life. Instinct is another world of that, but it's a semi-important thing when it comes to the System. Everyone has the Mindless Eye digging to their head since the question of the System.”
“I see... So that's what it was... How strange.” William mutters, understanding a bit more about the strange murmurs within his mind. They never cease, as if someone constantly tells something inside his mind, but those are intangible words.
“There are more of.. about that later. Tell me more about the statuses you've got so far, as I can't explain everything.”
William nods, while still looking at his screen. Agreeing to her requests, he explains his messages.
“It says I reached a successful merge of the Emblem and the System's initializing process. There are... not many things here. The status says I am tired, so that is about that. Health is good. There is also some form of skills underneath that and... My type section tells the status of Vectors and Mutant.” William explains.
“It does? Interesting... As for the status, it is for your current physical or psychic state of yours. That one is very important since it can tell you think about your body that you wouldn't know otherwise. Though it is only showing you a word, for now, it can be more than that. As for health, it is of similar importance to status. It gets detailed and better over the Rank-ups, as it shows you the most details about your health.”
“I see... What about the skills? It tells me how they work and upgrade, but I feel there is more about t than only this.”
“Skills... That is rather a wide topic to talk about, but it's the most important one. They have few categories, while the rank 0s you have are very lackluster. The ones I am talking about are combat, enhancement, surveillance, defensive, and weapon-related. That is because the types are universal views of the abilities and progression of any Walker. Their styles, abilities, and strangers with weaknesses can differ. However, certain things with System can have very different results or things within it in some special cases. What else is there? ”
“Huh?” William looks at her with a dumbfounded expression, as if any of her words make no sense to him. She said it as a matter of fact, while he has trouble taking everything in.
“Alright. Take it slowly. For now, tell me more about what you got. There should be more to it than you told me, seeing your motions.”
“Uh... I suppose. I don't understand the meaning or whether this is something important. As I swipe right, an empty screen with fog and a big sign above that tells Bestiary is there.”
“Bestiary? Like a diary of the animals?” Mi-Yung asks in an unsure tone as she never heard about it before. Not the mention of the word Bestiary itself, but the use of that word within the System.
There have been a few strange systems she has heard about, but not that. A game-like system, deck of cards system, upgrading system, and more... Some even include quests that are meant to be finished within the time limit. Killing monsters for materials and so on...
“I am not sure. There are some distinct features of the Dak beings portrayed through the fog. All of them are clouded in fog and I can't figure out the reason why, or what this portrays.”
“Must be because of System limitations. Since you have no idea even with the use of Mindless Eyes, I guess it will take some time. Everything that is there is questioned every so often by the System. If the beast... I don't know... die by your hands, there would be an answer for it? That sounds about what I would assume.” Mi-Yung explains.
“Like a list of monsters... Or something else? Information about them?”
“I don't know, William. Try to rest for now and go through the System once more. Also, you should deactivate your Emblem. You can't possibly have it active all the time.” Mi-Yung tells, with an unknown intention on her part.
“Right. I almost forgot. If you aren't sure of anything, think of some motion or some specific movement. Like that the Emblem can be activated by a physical means. Most Walkers do so it like that until they will have enough power to do it with the mind alone. It is quite important, with reasons to change as fast as possible, because any movement of the Emblem is responsible for life and death.”
“I guess I know what you mean... It's like putting asleep something active. I will figure something out.” William says in an understanding that has been caused by the Mindless eyes. The number of strange things and information put into his head was strange... In a sense, they are almost like a whisper of something while his mind understands some things within the System on an undeniable and subconscious level. It is impossible to describe, but William understands what Mi-Yung wants from him.
“Rest while you will do so. The day is long since the whole Awakening will go on for quite a bit more hours. The results of this day will become a path forward. I am sure you did great, but there will be a follow-up afterward. The Examination to be exact.”
Hearing her words, William couldn't stop himself from asking one thing that he should know. “How well I did?”
“75..” Mi-Yung tells him the official truth, while the true number... is unknown to her secret knowledge. In a true sense of the truth, even she doesn't know what should be the true number. Even the shifting truth of what is Tom Hough supposed to know is quite subjective. An error can happen, but only Mi-Yung knows more about what even happened. Perhaps she isn't alone and has some hunch of the sight beyond the veil of crimson, but a machine is a machine. It can't work with everything, without fail.
“That high? That's really great!” William says in surprise and with a forceful smile.
“Right? That is a basic number that is good enough for the Academy, so if you want, you can try to join, if you know what I mean?”
“Academy... I will give it a shot. Why not? I learned a lot in the past 6 weeks, so this won't go to waste. I will become someone greater than my father, who I have never seen.”
“Well... That is a big challenge ahead. Good luck, though.” Mi-Yung assures him while knowing his father well. She doesn't tell him more about this, as she knows many ways that William will sooner or later understand better himself. Rather than explaining it herself, the first-hand experience is better done alone.
For example, the Rank-ups. The ways to progress in the System, and being a Walker, in general. The challenge of going up in the Ranks fast is not the only way to get stronger. Some could get their Skills upgraded without the bottleneck that is the Rank-up. Taking some systematic approach to their own interpretation, the following Skill's rank can go higher than one's Rank.
Someone like that could be Rank 4 while having some skills at rank 5 if he one strong enough and forceful enough.
In the past, his father, Victor Gale, used to be such a person. A rather righteous man who loved to improve, and as a Walker, it was that much crazier. He achieved a lot while being the Rank 6 at best.
That includes the fight against the certain Rank 8 Dark being, which the Federation classifies as confidential. Though, Mi-Yung knows much about it, because she can, and could do so very easily.
The majority of other things were kind of easy to learn since Victor told her a lot of things about Walker's world back then. It was a different time in the Federation, so certain things changed over time.
That was more than 15 years ago, so a lot of things changed. The time when new land was surviving. Also, in a time of drastic changes, since the base survival aspects of humanity changed, after the appearance of the Rank 8 Walkers. Very few knew the exact number of such figures... It could be counted on one hand or two.
Alas, Mi-Yung knows where to shut up, and William isn't listening to her too much. She knows the reason, though. Any awakened Walker needs time to stabilize their life. The System or their mind, it doesn't matter too much.
Thinking a bit more about the way to negate this continuous drain on his mind and body, William figures it out.
A motion of clenching his right fist is all that he needs to make a choice to respond with the flow of Mindless Eyes. It is a motion to turn off the Emblem, System, and let the Vectors retract back into the Emblem.
It still takes about a minute, as following this weird call of the Mindless Eyes isn't that simple. He makes it so that the flow of a few Vectors enters his Emblem one bit at a time while following the connection with the Mindless Eye. After all, the Emblem is calling upon him, and so is something else within his Mindless Eye. While getting better at this mentally would take a while. He could feel it... This call for the hunt... It wants something... Whether.
“You have figured it out so soon?” Mi-Yung asks in surprise as she sees William's motions of his fists. A motion of a fist is a not bad choice at all, as the murmurs within his mind would make up the rest of the problems.
William keeps on playing and resting with his palm. Folding his fingers open and close, in a try to end this draining. Mi-Yung is waiting for nothing by this point. William has to first get accustomed to this System, which will take time.
Alas, William succeeds, and the flow of vectors moves back into his forearm, while the System also disappears. Though, the way System disappears is like a blink. One moment it is there, and then it's gone.
“What a strange thing. It keeps on reappearing within a moment my fist opens and closes up. There is also this weird tick in my mind.” William tells Mi-Yung, who is listening to him wondering about the System.
It is almost as if she is looking at her past self. Then young, with this strange system. The wandering young mind can cause a lot of relief amidst the reality that is hidden under the System's harsh missions and underlying problems.
It is only fortunate that he hasn't told her anything bad, so far. Although, that bestiary thing piqued her interest. From its name, she could deduct the possibility of involvement of the Dark beings. It could be something great, as with almost every secondary page, but it could be also something dangerous and questionable.
Like him, she is also someone with a secondary page. Her's is also something else. Enchantress is the name of her special page. It can pick additional effects on her choice of the weapon, while the underlying truth of her physical Emblem is from this very page. Every Rank-up meant the increase of the size of her Emblem, while the quality and quantity of her Arcanite increases. She can store effective ways of weapons while summoning them in less than 2 seconds.
It is a marvelous thing, which Mi-Yung kind of likes. It makes her unique enough, while her basics are strong as well. Being Rank 6, it is no surprise, but there are still many ways one could improve.
“Get familiar with it, William. I bet the next things will be equally interesting for you.”
“Well... It will be the Examination... I can't wait to see the Walkers of the many organizations that came here to fight over kids. That's gonna be funny.” William says in a chuckle, as his mood improves with his continuous familiarity with his fate.
This whole System seems much more interesting than he ever thought about.
While it is still very tiny in comparison with higher Walkers, he could still see the potential. It a fun, and increasing his strength could prove to be like a little progression game.
1 hour goes by, and William is still figuring out his own System. He figures his fist motion much better and could do it with ease by now. Mi-Yung rests aside by a table, as she watched the outside through the window. Time is not going as she anticipates. She planned to teach William a bit more thing about the Awakening of the Emblem, but here he is, getting familiar with the System instead. In a normal case, he should first figure out how to stop the Emblem itself, but this is fine too.
She wonders what would the Cloud and the others think. System awakening within the Emblem awakening shouldn't happen so soon.
“In. Out. In. Out. Gone. Appear. This is getting easier and easier.” William says out loud as his whole palm starts to hurt from the same movement.
He could feel the small strain that keeps going through his right forearm.
“Maybe you should rest. It has been an hour already. The Emblem's Arcanite is not infinite in your Emblem, so be careful to not lose control.”
